2. <strong>Materials</strong> technology in Estonia<br />

Window <strong>an</strong>d glass<br />

There are also several large window m<strong>an</strong>ufacturing comp<strong>an</strong>ies in Estonia. These include Saint-Gobain Klaas,<br />

O-I Production <strong>an</strong>d Andrese Grupi. High level physics research in n<strong>an</strong>omaterials, thin films <strong>an</strong>d photovoltaics<br />

is to some extent utilisable by the glass industry. However, only Andrese Grupi is established with Estoni<strong>an</strong><br />

capital <strong>an</strong>d there<strong>for</strong>e other comp<strong>an</strong>ies will be unlikely to have high interest in conducting R&D work in<br />

Estonia. Andrese Klaas, a part of Andrese Grupi is currently collaborating with the Estoni<strong>an</strong> N<strong>an</strong>otechnology<br />

Competence Centre <strong>for</strong> developing functional coatings. In Europe, Pilkington <strong>an</strong>d Saint Gobain are leading<br />

producers of multifunctional adv<strong>an</strong>ced glass both <strong>for</strong> construction sector <strong>an</strong>d <strong>for</strong> automotive industry <strong>an</strong>d thus<br />

entering the market will be difficult <strong>for</strong> Estoni<strong>an</strong> comp<strong>an</strong>ies which are very little on the global scale. Largest<br />

barrier <strong>for</strong> market entry of n<strong>an</strong>oenh<strong>an</strong>ced glass is the price, which is approximately 30-80% higher th<strong>an</strong> the<br />

traditional glass.<br />

Insulation materials<br />

Large insulation materials comp<strong>an</strong>ies located in Estonia include Krimelte <strong>an</strong>d Henkel Makroflex. Especially<br />

Krimelte, which as a comp<strong>an</strong>y running on Estoni<strong>an</strong> capital is very interesting <strong>for</strong> the future. More about these<br />

comp<strong>an</strong>ies c<strong>an</strong> be found in the comp<strong>an</strong>y case <strong>study</strong> section. Globally, comp<strong>an</strong>ies such as BASF, Aspen Aerogels<br />

<strong>an</strong>d Cabot Corporation already have n<strong>an</strong>otechnology enabled products in the market.<br />

Paints <strong>an</strong>d construction chemicals<br />

The largest Estoni<strong>an</strong> paint production comp<strong>an</strong>y is ES Sadolin, which has received <strong>an</strong> investment from Akzo<br />

Nobel Coatings. Based on the high national import<strong>an</strong>ce of chemical industry <strong>an</strong>d chemistry research in Estonia,<br />

there are some R&D resources that could be utilised in the paints <strong>an</strong>d construction chemicals sectors. However,<br />

there are already several comp<strong>an</strong>ies with n<strong>an</strong>oenh<strong>an</strong>ced paints on the market including Akzo Nobel, Jotun,<br />

Bioni CS <strong>an</strong>d Yasar Paint <strong>an</strong>d Chemicals.<br />

Summary <strong>an</strong>d conclusions<br />

Construction materials is the most varied sector of all compared<br />

R&D work<br />

Very dependent of the raw material <strong>an</strong>d application (minerals, oil shale, textiles, wood, chemicals)<br />

Dedicated research done mostly at TUT. Chemistry <strong>an</strong>d physics also at TU, KBFI <strong>an</strong>d ENCC.<br />

Construction materials is <strong>an</strong>d will be <strong>an</strong> import<strong>an</strong>t sector <strong>for</strong> Estonia in the future<br />

The industry is by nature quite local<br />

27% of construction materials go to exports <strong>an</strong>d mostly to neighboring countries<br />

Several large comp<strong>an</strong>ies with very adv<strong>an</strong>ced products are present in the global market <strong>an</strong>d it will be<br />

difficult <strong>for</strong> Estoni<strong>an</strong> comp<strong>an</strong>ies to produce adv<strong>an</strong>ced materials solutions that would have a signific<strong>an</strong>t<br />

competitive adv<strong>an</strong>tage. However, some niche solutions could gain even a big market share. (Ref to e.g.<br />

There are very interesting initiatives related to adv<strong>an</strong>ced materials related to construction materials<br />

ENCC, Andrese Klaasi, Clay Processing Services
