Trojans bring back four ‘solid’ performers
FINDLAY — Findlay High’s boys basketball team
is smaller this season.
But Jim Rucki’s expectations aren’t.
“Obviously you don’t have to replace a 7-footer very
often. I’m not sure how you do that,” Rucki said.
“But we have four solid players back. Since we
started practice, our guys have been working hard
and doing a nice job.”
Last year’s 16-6 slate raised Rucki’s record at Findlay
to 197-92, moving him past John Stozich (193-99)
and into second place behind Carl Bachman (342-101)
on the list of Findlay High basketball coaches.
Rucki will field a relatively young team this season.
But it is not a group lacking varsity experience.
Joseph Davidson, a 6-7 forward, (6.1 points, 5.4
rebounds) is the lone senior veteran on the roster. But
6-1 junior Michael Clark (8.1 points, 2.2 rebounds) and
6-3 junior Adam Twining (4.6 points, 2.9 rebounds
have been playing varsity ball since they were freshmen
and 6-3 junior Austin Gutting (6 points, 3.3
rebounds) 6-3) was one of eight players to see action
in all 22 games last season. Junior Nick Kairys (5-9)
also saw some varsity action a year ago.
FINDLAY — With a 66 percent career winning
ercentage, Findlay High girls basketball coach Connie
yon is all over the Xs and Os of the sport.
What she likes about the 2012-13 version of the Troans
goes beyond the blackboard.
“The chemistry in this group is remarkable,” Lyon
said. “Their energy is good, they’re an extremely positive
group and their personalities and work ethics are great.
This is a fun group to be around.”
Three seniors return from a team that went 11-11
last season, and there’s a deep junior class Lyon will be
counting on as well.
Findlay should be strong in the paint with the return
of Christina McQueen and Taylor Stanfield.
McQueen, a 6-foot-3 senior who has signed a national
letter of intent with Gardner Webb University, earned
second-team all-Three Rivers Athletic Conference honors
last season after averaging 12.5 points, 9.4 rebounds and
2.6 blocked shots per game. Stanfield was also a force
inside, especially the first half of the 2011-12 season.
Findlay also returns excellent size and experience
on the wing in 5-11 senior guards Nicole Muehl (10.5

Rucki has some big shoes to replace, however, especially
in the middle, where 6-11 center C.J. Gettys
averaged 20.5 points, 9.1 rebounds and 2 blocked shots
per game. Kairys and 5-8 junior Braden Miller are
competing for the fifth- and sixth-man spots. Duke
Gobrecht, a 6-4 junior, will help out in the post along
with 6-2 senior Montrel Moss.
Juniors Boden Fisher (6-1) and Zach Haynes (6-0)
add depth on the perimeter, along with sophomore
3-point threat Grant Niswander.

Zoe Swisher, a 5-6 junior point guard, will likely
round out the starting lineup.
Jacey Hardesty, a 5-7 guard who also saw varsity
action last season, heads up a big junior class that also
includes Lexi Blatnik (5-8), Joslyn Bendt (5-6), Sarah
Wintrow (5-7), Sarah Thomas (5-9), Jenny Vielhaber
(5-9) and Nola Jackson (5-10).
Many in that group will be getting their first varsity
experience. But Lyon likes what they bring to the table.
