FOSTORIA REVIEW TIMES, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2012 KANSAS — After winning five games following a inless 2010-11 campaign, the Lakota boys are hoping o build on the progress they made last year. The Raiders will depend on experience that Lakota oach Tim Walsh thinks will propel them to the upper alf of the Midland Athletic League. “We are a bit more experienced than we have been,” Walsh said, “These same kids, a lot of them were playing varsity two years ago. They took their lumps back then, now they’ve matured, they have experience and they’ve gotten a little bit bigger.” Lakota will have to overcome a lack of consistent shooting and rebounding with the loss of leading scorer and rebounder Nick McDole, whose 10 points and 5 rebounds per game will be missed. “We’ve (only) got a couple of post players; other than that we’re very guard oriented,” Walsh said. “Obviously, my concern right now is if we will be able to rebound effectively.” Walsh expects third-year starter Kody Brewer to do much of the teams scoring this year. The 6-foot-1 senior averaged 7.5 points per game in addition to his KANSAS — Quickness and post play will the ame of the game for Lakota’s girls this season. Raiders coach Mike Miller expects progress this ear after a 4-18 overall record and 1-9 league mark n his second year as coach. “We’re a little quicker this year,” Miller said of this year’s squad, “so I think our defense will be better and our post play will be better.” Miller is wary of his team’s ability to score from the outside, but if he gets his way most of the scoring will be coming from inside the paint. The Raiders will miss the 12.9 points and 6.9 rebounds per game of Jessica Hoffman, who was lost to graduation last year, but they will count on 5-foot-4 senior Stephanie Miller, who led the team with 3.6 assists per game last year and will play a key roll in the getting the ball to the right spots. Also, 5-10 sophomore Katie Park, who averaged 5.7 rebounds a game in only a little more than half of a varsity season last year, will be important to improving the team’s post play. Also expected to be big contributors to Lakota’s squad this year will be letterwinning seniors Darris McGown (5-8) and Nathan Ray (5-11) and juniors Kyle Below (6-4) and Colin Timmons (6-1). Also in the mix for the Raiders are seniors Gavin Sprow (6-2), Nick Alexander (5-8) and Brandon Carver (6-4), juniors Josh Kirkpatrick (6-0),and Kevin Crowe (6-5) sophomore Casey Monroe (5-7) and freshmen Hunter Chalfin (5-8), and Spencer King (5-11). With strong experience, increased speed and another year under Miller’s system, the Lakota girls look to improve on 2011-12’s last place finish in the Midland Athletic League. While having six returning seniors sounds all fine and dandy for the Blue Jackets, New Riegel will need to replace some big time talent that graduated. The Blue Jackets will be without four of their top five scorers from a season ago including first team All- Midland Athletic League players Cody Kinn (15 points, 5.9 rebounds per game) and Ryan Schalk (10.5 ppg, 47 3-pointers). Brandyn Reinhart is the Blue Jackets’ top returning player. A 6-foot-4 senior, Reinhart led all of New Riegel’s returning players with 10.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per contest last season. Also expected to supply major contributions for the Blue Jackets are seniors Andrew Hohman (4.6 ppg, 3.1 rpg), Brady Hall (3.1 ppg, 2.5 rpg), Korey Williams (4.2 ppg), Nick Wank (4.1 ppg) and Josh Nye (2.7 ppg). Hohman only played in nine games last season due to a broken arm. Nye saw the floor in just 11 varsity contests as he split time with the junior varsity unit. NEW RIEGEL — No need to rebuild at New Riegel this season. Veteran girls basketball coach Steve Lucius welcomes back six returning letterwinners from last year’s outstanding team that posted a 21-4 overall record that included a 9-1 mark and outright Midland Athletic League championship. Lucius, who has a career record of 483-131 in 27 seasons as head coach at the school, has a pair of all-conference players back in Taylor Kirian and Kara Scherger. Kirian, a 5-foot-9 junior forward, landed a spot on the all-MAL second team last winter after netting 11.2 points with 5.8 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. Scherger, meanwhile, had an outstanding freshman year for the Blue Jackets. The 5-5 sophomore guard was honorable mention all-league after doing a little bit of everything. She netted 8.7 points with 2.9 rebounds, 3.2 steals and 2.0 assists per game. Junior forward Lauren Ladd (6-0) tossed in 8.6 points and grabbed a team-high 7.4 rebounds per game, while sophomore forward Taylor Arbogast (5-9), scored 7.0 points with 5.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists Aicholz Reinhart Hohman Also hoping to break the lineup are junior Jake Dryfuse and seniors Josh Burns and Jacob Schalk, who each played on the junior varsity squad a season ago. Similar to years past, coach Todd Aichholz, who owns a 93-38 career record in seven years at New Riegel, expects his athletic team to create opportunities in transition. With so many players having played high school basketball for four years, Aichholz will also have plenty of depth, which will create competition in both practice and games and help his team improve as the season goes on. BLUE JACKETS | GIRLS Blue Jackets loaded with talent, experience Lucius Scherger Kirian and 1.5 steals per contest. The returning quartet also helped the Blue Jackets earn a spot in last year’s Division IV regional final. Senior guard Abby Cassidy (5-6) and junior guard Morgan Noftz (5-5) also lettered last season; the duo combined for 2.7 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Seniors Ebony Bayward (5-7) and C’aira Conley (5-11) could see action at forward. Lauren Zoeller (5-4) and Ruth Ann Schreiner (5-2) are candidates at the guard spot.
