CHIEFTAINS | BOYS
H-L must overcome loss of four starters
BASCOM — Having lost four starters to graduation
is rough, but this year’s edition of the Hopewell-
Loudon boys is hoping to overcome experience with
hustle and versatility on the offensive end.
Thankfully for third-year head coach Adam Smith,
the Chieftains’ leading scorer returns for his senior
season. Six-foot junior Alec Gregg scored 13 points
to go with 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game last
year for the Chieftains, who went 13-9 overall and 8-3
in the Midland Athletic League.
Hopewell-Loudon’s season ended with a loss to New
Riegel in the sectional finals.
“He’s going to have to run point guard for us this
season,” Smith said of Gregg. “That will be a little
different role for him, but he will be able to handle it.
“So far, the younger kids are getting more comfortable
with how we do things and they are starting to
realize we should look into the post first.”
The Chieftains want to counter their lack of experience
with playing fast in transition and big in the
frontcourt. Defensively, they will play a multitude of
defenses, trying to keep the opposition off guard and
to produce turnovers.
BASCOM — Expectation are high this season for the
Hopewell-Loudon girls, as the Lady Chieftains return
nine players who earned varsity letters last season.
Hopewell-Loudon last season posted records of 17-5
overall and 7-3 in the Midland Athletic League.
The Lady Chieftains ended their season with a loss
in the sectional final to eventual regional finalist New
Riegel.
“We have set high expectations around here this
year,” coach Rod Daniel said. “We are growing and
getting better every day. We are showing improvement
in the scrimmages and I feel we are definitely getting
better as a team.”
Hopewell-Loudon has high expectations not only
because of the experience returning, but the Lady Chieftains
know the size of their lineup will pose some issues
for opposing defenses.
Among the players returning this year is 6-foot
senior Cassandra Hohman, who led the team in scoring
last season with 12.2 points while also grabbing 5.9
rebounds per game.
Joining Hohman among the seniors are 6-4 Danielle
“We like to get out and run,” Smith said. “We do
have to decide what is a good transition layup or just a
quick shot before trying to get it into the post, though.”
Other returnees for Hopewell-Loudon are 5-10
senior Adam Black (2.0 points, 2.0 rebounds per
game), 6-1 sophomore Ryan Lommerse (4.0 points,
3.0 rebounds) and 6-3 sophomore Brock Hill.
Other Chieftains who will see playing time include
juniors Nick Scaife (5-11) and Ben Bodart (6-foot) and
5-11 sophomore Garret Sendelbach.
CHIEFTAINS | GIRLS
Expectations high for 2012-13 Lady Chieftains
Daniel Burns Hohman
Rohrbach (8.7 points, 7.7 rebounds), 5-10 Lauren Trumpler
(8.9 points, 3.8 rebounds), 5-6 Racquel Hossler
(2.7 points, 3 assists), 5-6 Kailey Coleman, and 5-5
Marissa Reinhart.
Six-foot-1 Courtney Burns will look to improve on
a junior season in which she scored 10.2 points and
nabbed 7.8 rebounds per game.
Other juniors being counted on for contributions are
5-11 Hope Brickner and 5-7 Aleta Daniel (3.0 points,
2.0 rebounds).
