TIFFIN — Chemistry is key for any team that wants
to be successful. It will be even more important for coach
Ted Willman’s Calvert boys squad, which includes a
large number of unproven upperclassmen.
The Senecas lost six players to graduation who
accounted for almost 75 percent of the team’s offensive
production a year ago. Calvert finished last season with a
record of 18-5 overall and placed second in the Midland
Athletic League at 9-2. Willman said the early part of
this season will be about finding who plays best together.
“We’re going to be young,” Willman said. “We’ll be
laying a lot of kids to find out, chemistry-wise, who’s
laying well with who and with what positions. A lot of
t’s going to come down to chemistry.”
The one position Willman will not have to worry
bout filling will be point guard, where Nick Warnement
returns for his third year at the helm of the Seneca
offense. The 6-foot-2 senior averaged 15.8 points per
game in his junior campaign and earned MAL player
of the year, District 6 player of the year and honorable
mention All-Ohio honors.

TIFFIN — Experience and depth are rarely found
ogether in basketball at the high school level. Gradution
and low turnout can deny teams the chance to
reach their full potential. That will not be the case this
season for Tiffin Calvert.
The Senecas lost only one senior to graduation and
return the top four scorers from last year’s team that
finished the season 12-10 overall and 6-4 in Midland
Athletic League play. Coach Tim Ritzler believes the
combination of experience and talent give his team
the opportunity to have a special season.
One of those juniors is returning starter Olivia
Smith. The 5-foot-7 point guard averaged a teamhigh
12.9 points per game as a sophomore en route
to earning first-team All-MAL and second-team All-
Northwest District honors.
The team also welcomes back top shooter Megan
Funkhouser. The 5-foot-5 senior was a second-team
All-MAL pick and honorable mention all-district selection
after averaging 10.5 points per game last season.
Juniors Nicole Bickley (5-11) and Kate Brickner
(5-6) both averaged more than 8 points per game last

Chemistry will be important to Senecas
Willman Thompson Warnement
(5-11) and Brad Iannantuono (5-10) are all returning
lettermen who averaged a combined 4.0 points per game
last season. They will be charged with helping Warnement
pick up some of the offensive load that was lost
to graduation.
Juniors Austin Ball (5-10) and Marcus Somers (6-0)
saw limited varsity action a year ago, while Michael
Bennett (6-1), Austin Perry (6-2) and Danny Reineke
(5-11) will also compete for playing time on this mostly
inexperienced squad.

After gaining varsity experience for the first time
as sophomores a year ago, juniors Margaret Bowers
(5-10) and Sam Beckley (5-9) will play an increased
role in their second season on the varsity squad.
Seniors Marissa Horn (5-4) and Alanna Widman
(5-7), along with juniors Emma Sullivan (5-7) and
Ashley Perry (5-6), will compete for playing time and
provide depth for the experienced Senecas.
