Rudolph II, son <strong>of</strong> K<strong>in</strong>g Rudolph I, Duke 1282-1283<br />

Jo<strong>in</strong>tly with his Bro<strong>the</strong>r, Albrecht I<br />

Duke Rudolph II <strong>of</strong> Austria, titular Duke <strong>of</strong> Swabia (1270–May 10, 1290) was <strong>the</strong> younger son <strong>of</strong> Rudolph <strong>of</strong> Habsburg, from<br />

1273 K<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Romans, <strong>and</strong> Gertrude <strong>of</strong> Hohenburg.<br />

In December 1282 he became Duke <strong>of</strong> Austria <strong>and</strong> Styria jo<strong>in</strong>tly with his bro<strong>the</strong>r Albert I. However, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Treaty <strong>of</strong> Rhe<strong>in</strong>felden<br />

(June 1, 1283) he had to rel<strong>in</strong>quish his share. In 1289 he married Agnes <strong>of</strong> Bohemia (1269-96), daughter <strong>of</strong> Otakar II <strong>of</strong> Bohemia<br />

<strong>and</strong> had one son John. He died <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same year his son was born, at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> 20.<br />

His bro<strong>the</strong>r's failure to ensure that Rudolf would be adequately compensated for rel<strong>in</strong>quish<strong>in</strong>g his claime on <strong>the</strong> throne caused<br />

strife <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Habsburg family, lead<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> assass<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> Albert by Rudolph's son John Parricida <strong>in</strong> 1308.<br />

His fa<strong>the</strong>r K<strong>in</strong>g Rudolf also made him Duke <strong>of</strong> Swabia, a prov<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>in</strong> long-term disarray where <strong>the</strong> last duke, <strong>the</strong> underage<br />

Conrad<strong>in</strong>, had been killed <strong>in</strong> 1268 <strong>and</strong> where <strong>the</strong> Habsburgs <strong>the</strong>mselves were <strong>the</strong> most powerful prov<strong>in</strong>cial lords.<br />

Rudolf I <strong>of</strong> Habsburg (Czech: Rudolf I. Habsburský; 1281 – 3/4 July 1307,<br />

Horadovice <strong>in</strong> Bohemia) was K<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Bohemia (1306–1307), Duke <strong>of</strong> Austria (as<br />

Rudolph III), <strong>and</strong> titular K<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Pol<strong>and</strong> 1306–1307. He was <strong>the</strong> son <strong>of</strong> Albert I <strong>of</strong><br />

Germany <strong>and</strong> Elisabeth <strong>of</strong> Tirol.<br />

On May 25, 1300, he married Blanche, daughter <strong>of</strong> Philip III <strong>of</strong> France by his second<br />

wife Maria <strong>of</strong> Brabant. Their only daughter died young, <strong>and</strong> Blanche herself<br />

died <strong>in</strong> 1305.<br />

Rudolf was presented <strong>in</strong> 1306 as a rival claimant to <strong>the</strong> Bohemian throne aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

Henry <strong>of</strong> Car<strong>in</strong>thia. Albert had Rudolf married to Elisabeth Richeza <strong>of</strong> Pol<strong>and</strong>,<br />

widow <strong>of</strong> Wenceslas II <strong>of</strong> Bohemia (1278–1305) <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1306 occupied Prague to<br />

place Rudolf on <strong>the</strong> Czech throne.<br />

As some Czech nobles cont<strong>in</strong>ued to hold out for Henry <strong>of</strong> Car<strong>in</strong>thia, Rudolf<br />

besieged <strong>the</strong> rebel fortress <strong>of</strong> Horadovice, but fell ill <strong>of</strong> dysentery <strong>and</strong> died <strong>the</strong>re <strong>in</strong><br />

1307, leav<strong>in</strong>g no children. The Czech nobles <strong>the</strong>n restored Henry <strong>of</strong> Car<strong>in</strong>thia as<br />

k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> return for a charter <strong>of</strong> privileges.
