When <strong>the</strong> verm<strong>in</strong> are dead, <strong>the</strong> German oak will flourish once m<strong>or</strong>e (1927)<br />
<strong>the</strong> visual presentation of <strong>Jews</strong> as rats and <strong>the</strong> use of poison gas at least suggested<br />
what <strong>the</strong> <strong>Nazi</strong>s were capable of.<br />
In <strong>the</strong>se and o<strong>the</strong>r images, a viewer could assume ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> exaggeration of<br />
caricature <strong>or</strong> that <strong>the</strong> <strong>Nazi</strong>s were <strong>in</strong> deadly earnest. This was advantageous, s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>Nazi</strong>s were appeal<strong>in</strong>g to a broad audience. To suggest too great a violent <strong>in</strong>tent<br />
would alienate less radical Germans. Fervent anti-‐Semites, on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, could<br />
take <strong>the</strong> images m<strong>or</strong>e literally.<br />
Preface to Genocide: 1933-1941<br />
After Hitler took power <strong>in</strong> 1933, <strong>Nazi</strong> anti-‐Semitism took a turn. <strong>Jews</strong> <strong>in</strong>side<br />
Germany were still a threat, but one whose total defeat was near<strong>in</strong>g. The <strong>Nazi</strong>s<br />
began immediately restrict<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> rights of <strong>Jews</strong>, present<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir actions as peaceful
