lynch<strong>in</strong>g of an American Black. The <strong>Nazi</strong>s, aware of widespread rum<strong>or</strong>s with<strong>in</strong><br />

Germany of <strong>the</strong> massacre of <strong>Jews</strong>, had no wish to make clear <strong>the</strong> details of what <strong>the</strong>y<br />

were do<strong>in</strong>g. Such images could at least ease <strong>the</strong> consciences of Germans, tell<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Our Proposal (1944)<br />

<strong>the</strong>m that <strong>the</strong> Allies were as murderous as <strong>the</strong> rum<strong>or</strong>s <strong>the</strong>y heard suggested that<br />

Germany was.<br />

One might also consider <strong>the</strong> prestige weekly Goebbels established <strong>in</strong> 1940:<br />

Das Reich. Intended to reach an educated audience both <strong>in</strong> Germany and <strong>the</strong> rest of<br />

Europe, each issue carried a lead article by Joseph Goebbels. Most issues also<br />

carried an edit<strong>or</strong>ial cartoon. Goebbels made at least four calls to annihilate <strong>the</strong> <strong>Jews</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> his lead articles. I found only two edit<strong>or</strong>ial cartoons between 1940 and 1945 that<br />

had clear violent anti-­‐Semitic content. One <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> summer of 1941 addressed a<br />

standard <strong>the</strong>me <strong>in</strong> <strong>Nazi</strong> propaganda — <strong>the</strong> Jewish plan to wipe out <strong>the</strong> German<br />

people. It referred to American Jew Theod<strong>or</strong>e Kaufman’s self-­‐published book<br />

Germany Must Perish!, <strong>in</strong> which Kaufman called f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> sterilization of all Germans as
