<strong>Nazi</strong> Symbolic Violence 18<br />
S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>Nazi</strong> propaganda ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed that <strong>Jews</strong> viewed Gentiles as animals ra<strong>the</strong>r than<br />
fellow human be<strong>in</strong>gs, such photographs suggested c<strong>or</strong>respond<strong>in</strong>g violence toward<br />
Gentiles.<br />
At <strong>the</strong> same time, caricatures showed varieties of <strong>Nazi</strong> violence aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>Jews</strong>.<br />
Some examples were abstract. Two months after <strong>the</strong> <strong>Nazi</strong> takeover, a Stürmer<br />
cartoon had <strong>the</strong> arm of <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>istry of Education haul<strong>in</strong>g a Jewish teacher out of <strong>the</strong><br />
classroom.<br />
“Free <strong>the</strong> schools from <strong>the</strong> c<strong>or</strong>ruption of <strong>the</strong> Jewish spirit” (1933)<br />
Such cartoons did not necessarily imply physical violence aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>Jews</strong> — but<br />
nei<strong>the</strong>r did <strong>the</strong>y suggest gentle methods.<br />
Five months after Hitler’s takeover, Der Stürmer carried <strong>the</strong> most om<strong>in</strong>ous<br />
caricature I have found dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> early years of <strong>the</strong> Third Reich. With a ris<strong>in</strong>g<br />
swastika sun <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> background, a personification of Germany pushes a Jew<br />
(represent<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>Jews</strong>) off a cliff (see page 1). The consequences would, of course be<br />
fatal, but Germany is act<strong>in</strong>g only <strong>in</strong> self-‐defense, do<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Jews</strong> what <strong>the</strong> <strong>Jews</strong><br />
were attempt<strong>in</strong>g to do to Germany.
