Slope Pace - a pace or step on an oblique angle, used<br />
both in defense and offence (according to<br />
DiGrassi).<br />
Small Sword - a light dueling sword popular in the<br />
eighteenth century, precursor to the foil.<br />
Stop Hit - a counter-attack that hits.<br />
Swashbuckler - a period term derived from the sound<br />
of sword and buckler clashing together. A<br />
derisive name for an over exuberant fencer or<br />
thug.<br />
Swept Hilt - the interlocking ring guards on a<br />
sixteenth century rapier.<br />
Tang - the portion of the blade of a rapier that<br />
extends into the handle<br />
Tip Cut – a Draw Cut performed with only the tip of<br />
the blade. A fencer does not have to accept a Tip<br />
Cut in the <strong>Middle</strong> <strong>Kingdom</strong>, but may choose to<br />
do so.<br />
Thibault - See D'Anvers, Gerard Thibault.<br />
Thrust - an attack made by moving the sword parallel<br />
to its length and landing with the point.<br />
Tournament - a structured S.C.A., Inc. martial<br />
competition.<br />
Tuck - the English word for estoc<br />
USFA - United States Fencing Association, body<br />
governing collegiate and other amateur fencing in<br />
the United States.<br />
Void - moving the body to avoid an attack.<br />
Ward - a guard or invitation to attack (according to<br />
Di Grassi); in the <strong>Middle</strong> <strong>Kingdom</strong>, the student<br />
of a Warder.<br />
Warder - in the <strong>Middle</strong> <strong>Kingdom</strong>, a Companion to<br />
the Order of the Bronze Ring.<br />
Yield - the act of surrendering to your opponent.<br />
