second step in the process, which,
however, lengthens milking time.
Material used for dry cleaning
must be soft, but nonetheless with
good tactile properties, dry and
absorbent. Udder papers satisfy
these requirements, as does
agroclean® udder wool from
Lindner. Because of the naturally
occurring essential oils and resins
this special udder wool has an
additional antiseptic effect.
Here it has to be stated
that the
requirements for udder wool for
cleaning the udders (soft and
with good tactile properties, dry
and absorbent) cannot be
found in conventional or cheap
wood wool from any old
company. The wood wool in the
illustration at the top left of
the next page exhibits edges
like saw blades. The effect on
the teats of wood wool like this
can be compared to cleaning
with emery paper and leads
to minor injuries and cuts to the
skin.
Drying udders in
moist and foam cleaning
The use of moist cloths has
become established as an
alternative to dry cleaning. Moist
cloths are made from disposable
material - usually paper - or in the
form of disposable textile cloths.
For each cow and milking
session one textile cloth is used
and is then washed and spun in

Moist cleaning material usually
contains disinfectant components.
These reduce the germ content on
the teat, as long as the dosage is
correct. However, it must also be
observed that any disinfectant
substance contaminates and
irritates the skin and can cause
dehydration and desquamation.
The teats therefore become more
prone to laceration.
