villages of the Province of Angora, where, in the course<br />

of time, they will perish."<br />

" Already dreadful news is reaching us about the fate<br />

of the deported people; the rich men of Paphra have been<br />

sent to the Province of Castamone, while the merchants<br />

of Samsoun and Tsarshamba have been distributed among<br />

the villages of Tsoroum, Sounghourlou, Medjitouzou<br />

and Inglibi."<br />

" Those first deported from Cadikioi and Eliazkioi<br />

reached the top of Mount Tsoumbouz without food on<br />

the first night; the next day they arrived in Kavak, the<br />

third day at Kara-Dag and on the fourth they came to<br />

Kaphzan. During these four days they were without<br />

food. On their arrival at Tsoroum, they were scattered<br />

in various Turkish villages, where they are dying from<br />

cold and hunger by hundreds. We do not know exactly<br />

the number of the persons who have been deported, but<br />

on a rough estimate they exceed 20,000, and the number<br />

is increasing every day. Arson, plunderings and crimes<br />

continue in a savage manner, and the deprivations and<br />

hardships add new victims daily."<br />

A third report states as follows:<br />

" Vehaedin, a special official of the Ministry of the<br />

Interior, came recently from Constantinople. He is in<br />

harshness emulating Rafet Pasha, the special emissary<br />

of the Ministry of War, for he prepares the lists of the<br />

persons to be deported, and the latter carries out the<br />

decisions which are reached. Thus, this week, another<br />

group of Greeks has been deported to the interior and<br />

Samsoun is in danger of being left without men."<br />

" The whole male population of Paphra also, where<br />

Vehaedin had gone, has been sent to Voivat, and the<br />

Turkish Government has ordered the closing of the<br />

tobacco warehouses and prohibited any sale of tobacco.<br />

The said Vehaedin, after having finished his sinister<br />

mission in Paphra, went the day before yesterday to
