CONDITION <strong>OF</strong> <strong>THE</strong> DEPORTED PEOPLE<br />

<strong>THE</strong> picture of the tragedy which has just been described<br />

would be imperfect, if one did not glance at the<br />

condition of those unfortunate Greeks, who, having been<br />

deported, are wandering about the mountains and plains<br />

of the interior of Anatolia, this country which is so inhospitable<br />

to them. The misfortunes which these victims<br />

of Teutonic Kultur and Turkish savagery are undergoing<br />

cannot be paralleled even in the darkest epochs.<br />

Deported, insulted, ill-treated, they are compelled to abjure<br />

their faith. Each becomes the spectator of the destruction<br />

of his neighbor and all of them together witness<br />

daily outrages committed upon their wives and daughters.<br />

They are dying of starvation every day. Who<br />

is going to give them medicine? Who will bury their<br />

dead?<br />

This situation is pictured in a report dated July 28th<br />

and transmitted through a communication of the Greek<br />

Legation at Constantinople, No. 5832 (Ministerial<br />

Archives, No. 12092) which is as follows:<br />

" In the station of Ak-Sakal we found 200 refugees<br />

from Madytos and 150 from Krithia, who, after the<br />

evacuation of Mehanion, were scattered in the grounds<br />

of the above-mentioned station without food or water.<br />

In the station of Oktsi-Ghiol we found 250 other inhabitants<br />

of Krithia and Madytos who for fifty days have<br />

lived under a burning sun and in the humidity of the<br />

night, in a desperate condition. As to the refugees of the<br />

district of Prokonnesos who have been scattered in the<br />

district of Sousourlouk and Baloukeser, neither is their<br />

number known nor the names of the villages in which<br />
