L D OCTRINAL OCTRINAL LLESSON L ESSON SSECTION SECTION ECTION 24 GGOD G OD OD’S OD PPROVISION P ROVISION FOR FOR IINDWELLING I NDWELLING SSIN S IN DOCTRINAL SUMMARY The Holy Spirit works progressive sanctification into the life of the believer; and this sanctification refers to that continued transformation of our moral and spiritual character so that the life of the believer mirrors our positional sanctification in Christ. The Holy Spirit liberated us from the the law; and henceforth believers do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. This means that Christians set their minds on the things of the Spirit and that Christians walk by the Spirit, because we are enabled to do so by the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit. And the indwelling Spirit guides and leads the Christian to put to death the deeds of the flesh, because we received not the spirit of slavery - but sonship through our adoption. This life in the Spirit is what God intended for each believer - as we are collectively instructed to walk by the Spirit and not by our flesh. If we heed this instruction, our lives will be characterized by the fruit of the Spirit, which cannot be produced in human lives by unaided self-effort. But rather, the fruit of the Spirit in the life of the believer is the product of a supernatural work brought to bear by the Holy Spirit. And it is only when we are walking in the Spirit and giving evidence of the fruit of His work in us that we can effectively serve the body of Christ and minister to those outside the church.
