One of the great comforts in the Christian life is that we, as individual believers, are
indwelt by the Spirit of God; and this presence of the Spirit in us is the guarantee
that God will one day fully redeem us and take us into glory. The Spirit’s presence in us
is the reason that we can love God and other people as the Father has commanded us.
It is the Spirit of God Who baptizes (immerses) us into the body of Christ, and He places
us and uses us in the church body as He wills. So that, as we are filled with the Spirit
and gifted by the Spirit and walking by the Spirit and sealed by the Spirit, then we can
worship Him in the spirit and glorify Him in all that we do. We can then love and serve
others in freedom ~ as we have been freed from our selfishness and self-serving sin.
Another comfort is the fact that the Spirit empowers us, fills us, gifts us, and changes
us so that we can walk in those good works “which God prepared beforehand” (Eph.
2:10) for us to fulfill. God has called Christians to be His people that He might “purify for
Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.” (Titus 2:14). Therefore,
as God has commissioned us to serve Him in a way that glorifies Him (Matt. 5:16), He
also enables us, by His Holy Spirit, to accomplish His works ~ that everyone will
recognize that our adequacy is from God.
