Welcome to <strong>the</strong> bumper autumn issue of Shorel<strong>in</strong>e; now a<br />
hefty 32 pages, as we just couldn’t fit all <strong>the</strong> wonderful<br />
articles and features <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> usual 28, despite us<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
smaller font and reduc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> photos. So thank you very<br />
much to our regular contributors and to those of you who<br />
have submitted news and stories <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> first time and all<br />
be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong> deadl<strong>in</strong>e too!<br />
In previous editions we have featured villagers from all<br />
walks of life – artists, craftsmen, fossil hunters, authors,<br />
restaurateurs, <strong>the</strong>rapists, tradespeople, fishermen and<br />
o<strong>the</strong>rs, but never local artisans. I would personally like to<br />
s<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> praises of several who have just f<strong>in</strong>ished an<br />
extension to our home : Mike Bowditch (master builder),<br />
Ralph Tucker (carpenter), Tim Holmes (handyman), Gerry<br />
Bearpark (electrician), Jonathan Tate (pa<strong>in</strong>ter) and Mark<br />
Hello. Firstly can I say how much I enjoy <strong>the</strong><br />
Shorel<strong>in</strong>e Magaz<strong>in</strong>e. I have been visit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Charmouth</strong> <strong>for</strong><br />
over 12 years with my husband and two bichon frise dogs.<br />
We have had a static caravan <strong>in</strong> Seadown Holiday Park <strong>for</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> past 3 years and regard <strong>Charmouth</strong> as our second<br />
home. The park is clean and tidy and <strong>the</strong> owners work very<br />
hard to keep it immaculate.<br />
Last weekend, Friday 6th August 2010, we spent a long<br />
weekend at our caravan. On Saturday even<strong>in</strong>g we took our<br />
two dogs to <strong>the</strong> beach as normal and noticed a group of<br />
people enjoy<strong>in</strong>g a BBQ and a few dr<strong>in</strong>ks on <strong>the</strong> beach. The<br />
next morn<strong>in</strong>g at 0730 I took <strong>the</strong> dogs down to <strong>the</strong> beach<br />
aga<strong>in</strong>, and was horrified to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> BBQ still<br />
on <strong>the</strong> beach with cans and bottles of beer thrown all over<br />
<strong>the</strong> beach. We walked fur<strong>the</strong>r down to <strong>the</strong> sea shore and<br />
was appalled to f<strong>in</strong>d broken bottles all over <strong>the</strong> sand. I<br />
managed to pick up what I could but was so angry at <strong>the</strong><br />
thoughtlessness of <strong>the</strong>se people. An <strong>in</strong>nocent child or dog<br />
could have seriously been hurt by <strong>the</strong>se disrespectful<br />
people.<br />
I regard <strong>Charmouth</strong> beach as a magical place, and a<br />
privilege to enjoy and can't understand how a group of<br />
people could be so thoughtless to o<strong>the</strong>rs who want to enjoy<br />
<strong>the</strong> beach.<br />
I know how much care <strong>the</strong> local people and <strong>the</strong> council take<br />
to ensure <strong>the</strong> beach is clean and tidy. I have seen <strong>the</strong><br />
council staff work<strong>in</strong>g hard on many an early morn<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
clear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> litter and empty<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> b<strong>in</strong>s that us holiday<br />
makers leave beh<strong>in</strong>d. And because so much care is taken,<br />
it makes me even angrier that a few thoughtless <strong>in</strong>dividuals<br />
can ru<strong>in</strong> such good work, and spoil <strong>the</strong> environment <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
rest of us.<br />
It is people like this that give holiday makers a bad name.<br />
Sorry <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> rant, but if I feel like this, I can only beg<strong>in</strong> to<br />
imag<strong>in</strong>e what <strong>the</strong> local people must feel.<br />
I only hope that some of <strong>the</strong> locals realise it is only a<br />
m<strong>in</strong>ority of <strong>in</strong>considerate holiday makers that could do this<br />
and most of us cherish and respect everyth<strong>in</strong>g about<br />
<strong>Charmouth</strong> and <strong>its</strong> magic.<br />

From The Editor<br />
Thirlwell (plumber). They are all very skilled professionals<br />
who take great pride <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir work. They were always<br />
cheerful – lots of whistl<strong>in</strong>g and s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g went on - and we<br />
couldn’t have wished <strong>for</strong> a nicer crew to have around <strong>for</strong> all<br />
those months – so thanks aga<strong>in</strong> guys.<br />
How lovely The Street looks now all those ugly overhang<strong>in</strong>g<br />
cables have been buried. BT were <strong>in</strong>vited to do <strong>the</strong> same<br />
with <strong>the</strong>ir telephone l<strong>in</strong>es while <strong>the</strong> trenches were open, but<br />
sadly <strong>the</strong>y didn’t take Western Power up on <strong>the</strong>ir offer. The<br />
new heritage lights should be <strong>in</strong> place very soon and <strong>the</strong><br />
addition of ladder bars from which floral baskets and<br />
Christmas decorations can be hung, will only add to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
charm.<br />
