News from <strong>Charmouth</strong> Primary<br />

In <strong>the</strong> words of that seasoned old broadcaster Terry<br />

Wogan, “Is it me?” When I was a lad my memories of <strong>the</strong><br />

school summer holidays was a time when <strong>the</strong> sun shone<br />

from dawn until dusk and endless time was spent <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

park rac<strong>in</strong>g about play<strong>in</strong>g football and cricket, partak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

family picnics and pester<strong>in</strong>g my Mum <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> occasional<br />

Jubbly. In recent times <strong>the</strong> month of August has meant low<br />

cloud, outbreaks of ra<strong>in</strong> and cool temperatures. One can<br />

only feel sorry <strong>for</strong> holiday makers look<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs to do<br />

when all <strong>the</strong>ir offspr<strong>in</strong>g want to do is to get on <strong>the</strong> beach<br />

and enjoy <strong>the</strong> beautiful coastal environment we are<br />

privileged to take pleasure <strong>in</strong> all year round. The long<br />

summer holiday was orig<strong>in</strong>ally set <strong>in</strong> place so that <strong>the</strong><br />

children could help with <strong>the</strong> harvest of crops – it would have<br />

been a soggy harvest this year!<br />

School opened at <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of September with 16<br />

children start<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> our Reception class. With fourteen years<br />

of education <strong>in</strong> front of <strong>the</strong>m I wonder what <strong>the</strong> world will<br />

be like when <strong>the</strong>y leave <strong>in</strong> 2025 or look<strong>in</strong>g fur<strong>the</strong>r ahead to<br />

when <strong>the</strong>y retire <strong>in</strong> 2075! The first day at school is always a<br />

landmark <strong>in</strong> family life and it was good to see we had no<br />

tears from ei<strong>the</strong>r children or parents on <strong>the</strong> first morn<strong>in</strong>g!<br />

As well as welcom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> new children to our school we also<br />

have new faces on <strong>the</strong> staff this term. Mrs Tams<strong>in</strong> Rowe,<br />

our new deputy head will be tak<strong>in</strong>g Year 5, Miss Chloe<br />

Richards, Year 3 and Miss Naomi White, Reception. We<br />

hope <strong>the</strong>y will be very happy work<strong>in</strong>g both with<strong>in</strong> school<br />

and <strong>the</strong> local <strong>community</strong>.<br />

A new year with new teachers means children have a whole<br />

range of new th<strong>in</strong>gs to learn. Our older children will be<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g about castles and a visit to Portland Castle has<br />

already taken place. Children found out so many th<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

about life <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> castle by actually be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>re and dress<strong>in</strong>g<br />

up <strong>in</strong> period costume. Lower down <strong>the</strong> school <strong>the</strong> focus is<br />

on life <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sixties, and it has been good to hear children<br />

listen<strong>in</strong>g to and sometimes repeat<strong>in</strong>g sixties songs. Our<br />

youngest children are bas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir learn<strong>in</strong>g on a portrait by<br />

that famous 16th century Italian pa<strong>in</strong>ter, Giuseppe<br />

Arcimboldo which is affectionately know as The Vegetable<br />

Man. We all know of children’s love of vegetables so <strong>the</strong>y<br />

will be gett<strong>in</strong>g to f<strong>in</strong>d out more about both <strong>the</strong> familiar and<br />

less familiar.<br />

Those of you who use <strong>the</strong> footpath to <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

boundary of <strong>the</strong> school, or Hammonds Mead to <strong>the</strong> south,<br />

will have seen we have had <strong>the</strong> builders <strong>in</strong> school s<strong>in</strong>ce June.<br />

A new extension has now been completed <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g, office and storage space. There is no doubt that it<br />

will be a well-used area by both staff and children. Whilst<br />

<strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g was be<strong>in</strong>g completed we also had <strong>the</strong> entrance<br />

<strong>hall</strong> to <strong>the</strong> school decorated and new carpet has been laid.<br />

The smell of new pa<strong>in</strong>t and carpet still l<strong>in</strong>gers and adds to<br />

<strong>the</strong> fresh feel of our school.<br />

By <strong>the</strong> time you read this article, <strong>the</strong> shops are already<br />

likely to be full of Christmas merchandise. Whilst I do not<br />

wish to br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> subject to <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>efront of your m<strong>in</strong>ds, we<br />

will be produc<strong>in</strong>g an end of term production, <strong>the</strong> dress<br />

rehearsal of which will be on Monday 13th December at<br />

9.45 am. All members of <strong>the</strong> <strong>community</strong> whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y have<br />

children <strong>in</strong> school or not are welcome to jo<strong>in</strong> us <strong>for</strong> this and<br />

<strong>the</strong> children do enjoy per<strong>for</strong>m<strong>in</strong>g to an audience!<br />

In <strong>the</strong> meantime enjoy what is bound to be an Indian<br />

summer – it is strange that <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r always seems to<br />

settle around <strong>the</strong> first week <strong>in</strong> September! So now is a good<br />

time to arrange a holiday <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UK.<br />
