Grand Open<strong>in</strong>g Of The Heritage Mews<br />

Rok jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> celebrations at <strong>the</strong> open<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong><br />

Heritage Mews development as <strong>the</strong> ribbon was cut by<br />

local schoolboy Jamie Thomas, whose suggestion of <strong>the</strong><br />

new name <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> development had been chosen. One<br />

close neighbour to <strong>the</strong> scheme, Mrs Lilley Bagley, was<br />

among those to compliment <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>the</strong> work<strong>for</strong>ce,<br />

who she said were always very courteous and considerate.<br />

The guests were full of praise <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> development, and<br />

many commented on how well it blended <strong>in</strong> with <strong>the</strong> area.<br />

All of <strong>the</strong> homes have been allocated accord<strong>in</strong>g to a ‘local<br />

lett<strong>in</strong>gs’ policy, which required applicants to have a strong<br />

local connection with <strong>Charmouth</strong>, <strong>the</strong>reby provid<strong>in</strong>g much<br />

needed af<strong>for</strong>dable homes <strong>for</strong> local people.<br />

The homes have been built follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> generous provision<br />

of land by West Dorset District Council, allow<strong>in</strong>g Yarl<strong>in</strong>gton<br />

Hous<strong>in</strong>g Group to develop part of <strong>the</strong> under-used car park.<br />

By work<strong>in</strong>g closely with <strong>Charmouth</strong> Parish Council<br />

throughout <strong>the</strong> whole plann<strong>in</strong>g and design process, <strong>the</strong><br />

scheme also benef<strong>its</strong> <strong>the</strong> local <strong>community</strong> with o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

environmental improvements to <strong>the</strong> area, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

resurfac<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> car park adjacent to <strong>the</strong> project and <strong>the</strong><br />

build<strong>in</strong>g of a new toilet block.<br />

Two years after first proposed, <strong>the</strong> controversial<br />

af<strong>for</strong>dable hous<strong>in</strong>g development <strong>in</strong> St Andrew’s Road<br />

car park has been completed and provides eleven<br />

homes <strong>for</strong> local people on <strong>the</strong> West Dorset Council<br />

hous<strong>in</strong>g list.<br />

Built by Rok Construction, <strong>the</strong> three houses and eight flats<br />

are highly <strong>in</strong>sulated, electrically powered and <strong>in</strong>corporate<br />

‘green’ build<strong>in</strong>g features, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a ground source heat<br />

pump system which provides low-cost heat<strong>in</strong>g and hot<br />

water. There are even two bat nest boxes!<br />

Tim Holmes, liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> number 1 Heritage Close, is delighted<br />

with his new 3-bed home and praised Yarl<strong>in</strong>gton Hous<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Association <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir attention to detail.<br />

He said all <strong>the</strong> prospective tenants were <strong>in</strong>vited to<br />

Yarl<strong>in</strong>gton’s headquarters <strong>in</strong> Yeovil on 6th August to sign<br />

Tenancy Agreements, view a video on Good Neighbours,<br />

receive <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation packs and best of all, some sh<strong>in</strong>y new<br />

keys to <strong>the</strong>ir future homes.<br />

Roger Powell, chairman of Yarl<strong>in</strong>gton Hous<strong>in</strong>g Group said<br />

“This is our first project <strong>in</strong> West Dorset, and we are delighted<br />

with <strong>the</strong> outcome. It is vital that <strong>the</strong>re is af<strong>for</strong>dable hous<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area enabl<strong>in</strong>g local people to rema<strong>in</strong> here. The<br />

homes look fantastic; we are very proud of this<br />

development, and of <strong>the</strong> way that all of <strong>the</strong> parties have<br />

worked toge<strong>the</strong>r to enable this to come about.”<br />

Robert Gould, Leader of West Dorset District Council, said<br />

“Provid<strong>in</strong>g decent, af<strong>for</strong>dable homes <strong>for</strong> local people is <strong>the</strong><br />

district council’s top priority. I am thrilled that by hand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

over this underused land, which represents an <strong>in</strong>vestment<br />

of around £425,000, <strong>the</strong> district council has helped ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

eleven families improve <strong>the</strong>ir life by mov<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to a new<br />

home.”<br />

The development is located with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> conservation area,<br />

and as such <strong>the</strong> properties have been f<strong>in</strong>ished <strong>in</strong> a material<br />

similar to <strong>the</strong> local stone, designed to fit <strong>in</strong> with <strong>the</strong><br />

aes<strong>the</strong>tic beauty of <strong>the</strong>ir surround<strong>in</strong>gs. Although <strong>the</strong> site is<br />

with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> permitted development area, as it is a rural<br />

scheme it <strong>in</strong>corporates many susta<strong>in</strong>able elements with<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> build, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Ground Source Heat Pumps provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />

an environmentally preferable supply of energy.<br />

Tim expla<strong>in</strong>ed that <strong>the</strong> company tries to foster a close-knit<br />

<strong>community</strong> with<strong>in</strong> all new developments, and as several<br />

tenants already knew each o<strong>the</strong>r it was easier <strong>in</strong> this case -<br />

<strong>the</strong>y’ve helped one o<strong>the</strong>r with removals and have already<br />

had neighbourhood barbeques.<br />

Controversial it may have been, but <strong>the</strong>re’s no doubt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

happ<strong>in</strong>ess of <strong>Charmouth</strong>’s latest eleven local people <strong>in</strong><br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g homes of<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir own at last.<br />
