On April 26th and 27th they came
and they ca me to Cleveland in
planes from St. Louis and in
planes and buses from Chicago and
Detroit. It was like old times w ith
heated competitions in So los, Pipe
Bands, Fife and Drum ba nds, Grupai
Cheoi l in all ages, Ceili Bands in all
ages, accordion bands, we had it al l.
Adjudicators like Mike Rafferty fro New
York and Li z Ca rroll from Chicago were
encouraged by the once aga in big
numbers in competitions. Thi s is due to
the hard work be ing done in our reg ion
by Chairman Dick Stanton w ho keeps
everybody well informed w ith frequent
updates and quarterly meetings to chart
the progress of our activities as a
Much turmoil is going on in the Dance
world as we stru ggle to train musicians
who can accommodate the stri ct tempo
now demanded by ou r dancers.
St Louis wi ll host the second of these
workshops in October at the North
American Feis Commiss ion Convention
w here many of our teac hers and
adjudicators w ill have a chance to
discuss these problems. A workshop in
setdanci ng also took place during Flead h
weekend under the superb instru ctions
of the famous Kath leen Co llins from
New York. Kath leen also adjudicated
and was very impressed by the standard.
Sessions were ongoing throughout the
night w ith sta lwa rts li ke Phil Durkin
Chicago, Tom McCafferty Cleveland,
Jimmy Coyle and Pat Cloonan hav ing
fun w ith the younger musicians and
sharin g tunes. It truly was a sp irited
weekend of music, competition and
sharing in what we love th e best, our
nat ive cu lture. The 1997 Mid West
Fl ead h is sc hedu led for Chicago and
plans were set in place to expand thi s
