SET DANCING<br />

One of the most popular streams in<br />

the Scoil Eigse is the traditional<br />

dancing section which covers the<br />

various regional sets as well as the best<br />

in ceilf (figure) dancing and the steps<br />

of the various traditional solo dances -<br />

hornpipe, reel, jig set dances, etc. At<br />

the dancing sessions, beginners and<br />

experts may participate with equal<br />

enjoyment; in many cases parents,<br />

whose children are taking part in some<br />

of the other sections, join in the<br />

dancing classes for a week of set­<br />

dancing. For many such people the<br />

Scoil Eigse week is the most enjoyable<br />

of the year.<br />

Down through the years si nce the first<br />

Scoi l Eigse in 1973 many of the greatest<br />

of traditional musicians in Ireland have<br />

been involved in the Sco il Eigse in<br />

classes, recita ls, lectures and<br />

workshops. The list is far too long to<br />

quote in fu ll but even over the past<br />

three or four years it would include<br />

such names as: Charl ie Len non, Joe<br />

Burke, Mick O'Brien, John Regan, Mick<br />

O'Connor, Anne & Nicky McAuliffe,<br />

Joe & Siobhan O'Donovan, Seamas<br />

Mac MathCma, Janet Harbison, Paddy<br />

Ryan, Paddy Tunn ey, Josie Sheain Jack,<br />

Tomas 6 Canai nn, Mick Tubridy,<br />

Kath leen Nesbitt, Treasa Ni Mhiollain,<br />

MI. 6 Raghallaigh, P.J. Hern on, Bobby<br />

Gardiner, Martin Hayes, Geraldine<br />

McNulty, Garry Shannon, Brendan<br />

McGlinchey, etc.<br />

The fee for enrolment in the Scoil Eigse<br />

is £40. This covers attendance at all<br />

Scoi l Eigse sessions including the Club<br />

Eigse. Scholarships are awarded to<br />

w inners of 1 st and 2nd places at<br />

Provincial Fleadhanna in the age<br />

groups 12-1 5 and 15-1 8 on the<br />

in struments mentioned above - (fidd le,<br />

2-row-accordion, etc. - in the open<br />

competitions - NOT in th e Slow Air<br />

competitions).<br />

But more than half of the attendance<br />

each year are non-Scholarship pupils of<br />

all ages and from all parts of Ireland<br />

and overseas.<br />
