A new community group in Cambourne
The meeting at The Hub on the 18 th September to discuss community events was well attended.
There were people of all ages, and backgrounds, people who have just moved here, to people who were amongst the very first settlers in
Cambourne. Susannah Harris: Community Development Officer (SCDC), Laura Parkinson: Community Development Worker (Consortium
of Housing Associations) and Richard Brown: Art Development Officer (SCDC) were all on hand to help guide the new group.
Over tea and biscuits, people were asked to note down their ideas and interests of activities/events in Cambourne. From there we sat down
and chatted about how to take things forward. Sharon Murray (who is the Chair of the Cherry Hinton Festival) helped co-ordinate the
evening’s discussions. People’s interests were around one off events - for example, discos and concerts to wine tasting and beer festivals.
One of the main areas discussed was a large event next year such as a fete or carnival to celebrate the 10 th year anniversary of Cambourne.
The ‘structure’ of the group is still very much up in the air. It was suggested that we have one big community group; with different groups
of people doing different activities for example, fete/celebration 2009 event, family holiday activities, stand alone events such as race nights,
discos etc.
We really need your help to make this a success though and would really like you to come to our next couple of meetings in October:
Monday 13 th October
7.30-8.30pm
Cambourne Soul Youth Venue – to discuss the ‘structure’ of this new community group. (Children welcome –games, air hockey, table
football etc there for their entertainment)
Monday 20 th October
7.30-8.30pm
Cambourne Soul Youth Venue – to discuss the ‘celebration’ 2009
(Children welcome –games, air hockey, table football etc there for their entertainment)
CAMBOURNE WI
There seemed to be a lot to report at our meeting this month, from a trip to London to experience a recording of ‘Loose
Women’ and a visit to Cambridge Corn Exchange to see ‘Calendar Girls’, to a change in the makeup of our local group of WIs
and the signing of a nationwide WI petition to encourage the setting up of a more integrated strategy to deal with the various
forms of violence against women.
Then Alison Sheldrick gave us an enlightening talk about ways to raise energy levels and beat fatigue. This all boiled down to
‘we are what we eat’, and how to identify the right foods and combinations of foods to enable the body to work more
efficiently. A balance of the main food groups at each meal, and several small meals during the day rather than a few large ones
were part of the message, but some members were very surprised to hear that a bowl of cornflakes or krispies for breakfast,
while giving a quick energy fix, can soon result in a steep downward curve leaving us hungry and tired. This seemed to go
against current advice, particularly that aimed at children, of the benefit of eating cereals for breakfast, but apparently it has to
be the right sort of cereal and with the right additions. Eating foods with too much sugar has the same ‘quick fix’ effect, and
we were horrified to find how much hidden sugar there is in many unlikely products on the supermarket shelves.
The bottom line in the search for increased energy levels seemed to be an avoidance or limit of certain foods, and a varied diet
of the rest, with a special look at the small print on the labels.
Our next meeting is in the committee room at The Hub on October 9 th when Rodney Tibbs will talk to us about ‘Patio
Gardening and Gardening in Small Places’. There will also be chance to socialise and browse though courses, trips and events
on offer.
Visitors always welcome for a small £2 charge. Looking forward to seeing you.
