“Cricket Club’s success”
The Cambourne Crier is delighted to announce that it has
awarded a grant of £315 to Cambourne Cricket Club. The
Crier fully supports the Club and is proud of its
achievements and the contribution it is making to the
local community. The money is being invested by the
Cricket Club in Winter nets and coaching for the Colts
(under 18s).
The net sessions will be held at Fenner’s, the University
of Cambridge’s world famous ground, from mid October.
The grant from the Crier is the latest success for the Club.
Over the summer it has seen both senior sides promoted
to higher divisions in the Cambridgeshire leagues,
appeared on BBC2's 'Britain From Above', was the Hunts
Post club of the month for August and has been awarded
Sport England's Clubmark status (a prestigious
accreditation scheme for high quality junior sports clubs).
Charlie Stephenson, Cambourne Cricket Club's
Development Manager and Head Coach, commented:
"We are absolutely delighted to have received the grant
from the Cambourne Crier as well as achieving Clubmark
status. Winter nets are really important, as they give us a
chance to accelerate our progress so that next season we
are even stronger.
Mini Colts celebrate their bronze awards.
October 2008
The Colts are improving all the time - the potential within
the club is really awesome. For example, five of the Colts
have represented the District this season: Ollie Vale, Nik
Patel, Vivek Joseph, Harry Mills and George Haworth (all
under 16). Liam Healey (16), who has played senior cricket,
has also been a revelation this season, and is the Club’s
leading run-scorer.
I am also delighted that we have achieved Clubmark status.
Our members can trust that juniors are properly looked
after, that there is quality coaching, equal opportunities
and good management. As a club we are accessible and
active - we aim to get the best out of young people and give
everyone a sporting chance to succeed and have fun
playing cricket."
Jenny Lowe, Cambridgeshire Cricket Board's Chief
Development Officer, said:
"I would like to congratulate Cambourne Cricket Club
on achieving ECB Clubmark accreditation this
season. The club and committee have worked
extremely hard to gain this status and they should be
very proud of their achievement. The work the club
have put in should help them to develop as a safe and
child friendly club within the community of
Cambourne."
Planning Permission & Land
Page 4
Towards Cambourne’s Third Primary School
October 2008 Update
Since the last update, I’m sorry to report there has been little progress towards setting up Cambourne’s third primary school. This is disappointing for
everyone, but particularly for parents in Cambourne. The recent and planned activity is as follows:
June 2008 – Cambridgeshire County Council approved the planning application for the school’s temporary accommodation on the site next
to the one proposed for the permanent school;
August 2008 – South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC) rejected the outline planning application for the permanent accommodation at
Jeavons Wood;
October 2008 – MCA Developments, in collaboration with the County Council, will submit a revised, full planning application to SCDC for
the permanent accommodation, taking account of the concerns raised in August;
The design plans for the permanent accommodation will be available to the public at a Parish Council meeting soon;
November 2008 – SCDC is expected to meet to determine the outcome of MCA Developments’ application for the additional 950 homes;
If the application for the additional homes is approved, SCDC will begin negotiations with MCA Developments to finalise their financial
contribution for community services, i.e. a Section 106 agreement;
If the Section 106 agreement is completed by February 2009 and MCA Developments then releases the land to the County Council, the
temporary accommodation for the third school can be set up for the start of term in September 2009.
With the ongoing uncertainty over the land, the County Council again must consider contingency plans in case the third school cannot be opened on
the Jeavons Wood site in September 2009.
Comberton Education Trust
The final steps in formalising the establishment of the Comberton Education Trust are being taken. Once the Trust is formed, it can move forward with
establishing a temporary governing body for the third Cambourne primary school and liaising with the County Council and the architects on the detailed
plans for the school. Decisions about the appointment of a headteacher and other members of staff will be made once planning permission and release
of the land have been agreed.
Admissions
Parents are advised not to name the third Cambourne school as one of their two preferences when applying for a school place during this year or for
September 2009. Once there is certainty over the opening of the school, parents will be asked if they wish to express an additional preference for it.
Parents are also advised to consider carefully the implications of only naming one Cambourne school in their application; if the Admissions Team is
unable to allocate a place at that school, it will be unlikely that a place will be allocated at the other Cambourne school.
Parents applying for school places for September 2009 should make sure they understand the new oversubscription criteria being introduced for the
Cambourne schools. Greater priority is being given to siblings and to those who live outside a school’s catchment but within Cambourne, as follows:
For both Monkfield Park and The Vine Inter-Church primary schools, priority will go in order to:
1. Children who are looked after or who have a statement of special educational need;
2. Children with a sibling at the school at the time of admission and who live in the catchment area;
3. Children with a sibling at the school at the time of admission and who live in Cambourne;
4. Children living in the catchment area;
5. Children living in Cambourne who have been unable to gain a place at their catchment area school because of oversubscription;
6. Children living in Cambourne;
7. Children living outside Cambourne who have a sibling at the school at the time of admission;
8. Children living outside Cambourne.
In cases of equal merit, priority will go to children living nearest the school as measured by a straight line.
Applications for reception places in September 2009 must be submitted online or using the paper application form by 5 th December 2008. Offer letters
will be issued to parents on 21 st April 2009. The information booklets for parents will be available online and from primary schools this month.
School Places for Cambourne Children
At Monkfield Park Primary School there are currently places available in years three, four and six. At The Vine Inter Church Primary School there are
places available in years three, four and five, though additional places have been offered, wherever possible, for Cambourne residents in year six as the
school continues to grow to its full capacity.
Where places at the two Cambourne schools are not available, places at nearby alternative schools will be offered. There is a thriving community of
around fifty Cambourne children now attending Hardwick Primary School, which continues to work in partnership with the Cambourne schools and
parents. A small number of places have been offered at other schools, where parents have expressed particular preferences. This includes the nearby
Bourn Primary School.
In response to the many questions that parents have been asking, the Local Authority set up a ‘frequently asked questions’ section on the County Council
website to provide parents with accurate information on a range of issues relating to education provision in Cambourne. The page can be accessed from
www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk. If parents have particular questions that they feel are not addressed on the website, please email them to the address
below.
Hairy Potter
The Garden Wizard
September
If you would like to ask Hairy Potter a garden related question, please email editorial@cambourne.info
October can often feel like the end of the garden year. The weather of the
summer is now long gone (not a bad thing some might say!). Look carefully though and all
around things are changing as quickly as they did in spring. The trees and shrubs are doing their swan song of berries and
autumn foliage and now is the time to take stock and have a bit of a clear up. Look at it as putting your garden to bed but
at the same time getting it ready for next year. Putting some effort in now will pay you back in the spring. You can plant out
wallflowers, pansies and forget-me-nots this month, ready for a strong start in 2009. Frost will be here soon so watch out for
those tender plants. Bring them inside or use a protective covering.
Top 10 jobs
1. Clear up fallen leaves regularly
2. Cut back perennials that have finished for the year
3. If not done last month, divide and re plant herbaceous perennials
4. Move tender plants, including aquatic ones, into shelter
5. Plant bare rooted roses
6. Why not plant a hedge!
7. Prune climbing or rambling roses, removing all old stems
8. Plant Tulip bulbs 15 – 20cm deep (6 – 8 inches in old money!)
9. Last real chance to mow the lawn.
10. Fork over and put a layer of organic matter on your borders
The pond will also need plenty of attention. Thin out overgrown oxygenating plants or for that matter any dense foliage.
Keep the surface and bottom clear of dead leaves. Placing a net over the surface will help.
In the Vegetable garden
Personally I think there is more to do here than anywhere. The theme is “get ahead”. Last of the harvest will bring you
marrows, carrots and beetroot for storing, even the odd outdoor tomato if lucky. Once this is done - Start Digging! As the
soil is heavy round here, leave it in clods for the winter to do the work. You can prepare some of the ground for planting
out winter and hardy spring vegetables including cabbages. Now is the time to sow hardy peas and broad beans under
cloches, divide large rhubarb crows, prune asparagus stems to the ground, plant hardy varieties of garlic and cut back Jerusalem
artichokes ready to dig when you need them.
Better get going then… See you in November!
SPECIAL HOMES NEEDED
FOR NERVOUS KITTENS
St Neots & District Cats Protection have several nervous kittens in our branch
that are looking for that extra special home. Experienced cat owners
preferred, homes with adults only or with much older children where you
are at home quite a lot in order to give these kittens the extra love and
attention they really need.
We have 3 black & white 14 week olds (boys), 1 ginger/white 5 month old
boy and 1 tabby and 1 tortoiseshell both female who are both approximately
5 months old now.
None of these kittens are agressive but show nervous reactions when
exposed to new people and unusual situations. It is important that your
home has access to a garden and is not close to a busy or main road. We
would not home these kittens where there are young children.
With your patience, time and love, these kittens will become loving pets.
When you take them home, they will have had their first vaccination, been
treated for fleas and worms and had a vetinary health check.
If you think you have what it takes to meet the challenge of these beautiful
kittens phone us today on and we will arrange a no home visit.
Cambourne Garden Club
‘Pimms in a Cambourne Garden’ was the title of
our August meeting. Didn’t quite work out like
that though as at 7.27, three minutes before the
start time, the heavens opened. So we drank
our Pimms and ate our nibbles indoors, looking
out at the garden through rain-streaked
windows. But a good time was had by all in
spite of the weather, and when eventually the
rain abated, we were able to get outside for a
short walk round the garden, although by then
it was getting dark and not easy to see
anything! Hardy lot, us gardeners, and it hasn’t
put us off doing a similar event next year.
September’s meeting will have been and gone
by the time this comes out, but the October
meeting will be a Question and Answer session
hosted by our resident expert, Debbie Walker,
and none other than the Hairy Potter!
So put it in your diary and come along with your
gardening problems: October 23 rd starting at
8pm for coffee, chat and plant swap.
Cambourne Youth Partnership – presents: Imagination Our Nation
Cambourne Youth Partnership and Start-Arts wants to hear from young people who would like to take part in this very ambitious four
year cultural celebration culminating in 2012. Over the next four years participants can go to workshops on costume design, drumming,
dance and music and can begin to use their skills to help create a mini Carnival as part of the Cambourne Youth Street Festival next
summer. The workshops and classes require no prior experience and will build over the next four years so that Cambourne’s young
people can join thousands of others from across the country in a variety of events during the lead up to mass celebrations in 2012.
If you want to find out more about the opportunities to get involved in carnival please come to the Cambourne Soul for a very short
meeting at 6.00pm on Thursday 16 th October to meet the team and to see how you can get involved.
CAMBOURNE WILDLIFE
Wildlife Review
October 2008
Walking through the Country Park and Oaks Wood this afternoon, I noticed
how many berries there are this year. The blackberries in the wood were
particularly tasty and there are plenty of haws on the hawthorn along the
hedgerows. This should encourage lots of birds over from the continent as the
weather gets harsher. Keep your eyes peeled and let me know when you see
the migrants arriving. Also keep a look out for fungi, as this is the time of year
when most species produce their fruiting bodies above ground that we call
mushrooms or toadstools.
Fieldfare eating haws
Frogs, toads and newts will be preparing
for hibernation, searching for damp places to tuck themselves away
for the winter. A Cambourne family brought me a female smooth newt
they had found on their living room carpet! She looked to be in good
health so we put her into the newt refuge in Oaks Wood where she
will be safe for the winter. If you see any amphibians away from water,
don’t be surprised as they can walk quite far. Unless they are in
danger, leave them to find their own hibernation spot.
You could help them out by building a hibernaculum (the posh word
for a place to hibernate) in your garden. All you need is a pile of
Common toad
stones or logs covered in soil.
Litter
Just a reminder that we have litter picking kits available if any groups would like to borrow them. Our
December event will be a big litter pick. We don’t mind children playing in the woods and making dens, so
long as they don’t pull up living plants to do it, and that they take ALL their litter away with them.
Events
Look out for posters advertising wildlife events for children during half term or check on our website
www.wildifebcnp.org/events. You will need to book places on these.
In November we will be returning to Monkfield Wood (the one behind the pub) to clear back the brambles
and rose from the paths and open up some of the small glades to encourage more woodland flowers. This
work party will be on Sunday 2 nd November from 10am to 1pm. We will meet at the Manor House at 10am
to collect tools, but you can meet us just after 10 in the wood if you live nearby. We will provide gloves and
tools, plus hot drinks and biscuits to keep you going. If you have any questions then please get in touch.
Pastoral Thoughts
There is a common misconception in the world today.
It is a lie told over and over again. This misconception
is that good people go to heaven. The major problem
with this statement is the fact that there are no good
people. Of course from our viewpoint there are many
people who lead decent lives, do no harm to other
people and are generally pleasant. So, in our opinion
we might call them good. However, as in many things
in life our opinions do not count. Because no matter
how many little old ladies we help cross the road or
how many kittens we rescue we are all still stained
with sin. Another difficulty with that statement is the
fact that it has no basis in the scripture. Our opinions
do not count, but what does matter is the word of God.
Because if our thoughts, ideas or teachings about
heaven or God are not based in His word then there is
no foundation of truth for that thing. But, what does
God have to say about good people?
Psalm 14:2 The LORD looked down from heaven
upon the children of men, to see if there were any
that did understand, and seek God 3 They are all
gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there
is none that doeth good, no, not one.
By Vincent Menezes
THIS MONTH IN HISTORY
And in the New Testament the same message is repeated
in Romans chapter 3. Even Jesus himself affirmed that
there were no good people, that is from God’s
viewpoint, which is the only one that counts, in the book
of Mark.
Mark 10:18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou
me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.
Remember entrance into eternal life is not based upon
your works because they will never be good enough.
Because if we could work our way into heaven then
Christ would not have needed to die for our sins upon
the cross. It is plainly stated in Ephesians 2:8 For by
grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of
yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
It is a gift, it cannot be earned nor is it deserved. The
only thing you can really do with the gift is either accept
it or reject it. Personally I would advise accepting the
gift through faith in Christ. Because the alternative is
not pleasant.
If you need more information on the subject of you have
any questions just let me know. We are here to help.
A new community group in Cambourne
The meeting at The Hub on the 18 th September to discuss community events was well attended.
There were people of all ages, and backgrounds, people who have just moved here, to people who were amongst the very first settlers in
Cambourne. Susannah Harris: Community Development Officer (SCDC), Laura Parkinson: Community Development Worker (Consortium
of Housing Associations) and Richard Brown: Art Development Officer (SCDC) were all on hand to help guide the new group.
Over tea and biscuits, people were asked to note down their ideas and interests of activities/events in Cambourne. From there we sat down
and chatted about how to take things forward. Sharon Murray (who is the Chair of the Cherry Hinton Festival) helped co-ordinate the
evening’s discussions. People’s interests were around one off events - for example, discos and concerts to wine tasting and beer festivals.
One of the main areas discussed was a large event next year such as a fete or carnival to celebrate the 10 th year anniversary of Cambourne.
The ‘structure’ of the group is still very much up in the air. It was suggested that we have one big community group; with different groups
of people doing different activities for example, fete/celebration 2009 event, family holiday activities, stand alone events such as race nights,
discos etc.
We really need your help to make this a success though and would really like you to come to our next couple of meetings in October:
Monday 13 th October
7.30-8.30pm
Cambourne Soul Youth Venue – to discuss the ‘structure’ of this new community group. (Children welcome –games, air hockey, table
football etc there for their entertainment)
Monday 20 th October
(Children welcome –games, air hockey, table football etc there for their entertainment)
If you would like any further information or would like to put forward your views to be raised at the meeting on your behalf please email
CAMBOURNE WI
There seemed to be a lot to report at our meeting this month, from a trip to London to experience a recording of ‘Loose
Women’ and a visit to Cambridge Corn Exchange to see ‘Calendar Girls’, to a change in the makeup of our local group of WIs
and the signing of a nationwide WI petition to encourage the setting up of a more integrated strategy to deal with the various
forms of violence against women.
Then Alison Sheldrick gave us an enlightening talk about ways to raise energy levels and beat fatigue. This all boiled down to
‘we are what we eat’, and how to identify the right foods and combinations of foods to enable the body to work more
efficiently. A balance of the main food groups at each meal, and several small meals during the day rather than a few large ones
were part of the message, but some members were very surprised to hear that a bowl of cornflakes or krispies for breakfast,
while giving a quick energy fix, can soon result in a steep downward curve leaving us hungry and tired. This seemed to go
against current advice, particularly that aimed at children, of the benefit of eating cereals for breakfast, but apparently it has to
be the right sort of cereal and with the right additions. Eating foods with too much sugar has the same ‘quick fix’ effect, and
we were horrified to find how much hidden sugar there is in many unlikely products on the supermarket shelves.
The bottom line in the search for increased energy levels seemed to be an avoidance or limit of certain foods, and a varied diet
of the rest, with a special look at the small print on the labels.
Our next meeting is in the committee room at The Hub on October 9 th when Rodney Tibbs will talk to us about ‘Patio
Gardening and Gardening in Small Places’. There will also be chance to socialise and browse though courses, trips and events
on offer.
Visitors always welcome for a small £2 charge. Looking forward to seeing you.

INTELLIGENT ANSWERS
TO HARD WATER
PROBLEMS
Ashwell Water Softeners is a successful
business, launched by Mark & Sara Allen
after their son Max’s Eczema benefited
from the fitting of a Water Softener.
Nottingham University is currently
under- taking the first ever research
project to inves- tigate links between
hard water and eczema. Eczema,
psoriasis and other skin conditions
certainly aren’t helped by hard water and
many of Mark’s customers are remarking
that a water softener has made a
noticeable improvement.
Due to the success of Ashwell Water
softeners, EcoWater Systems, a premium
Water Softener Manufacturer, has
awarded the business dealership status.
“To think that the only reason we
originally installed a Water Softener was
to help our sons skin condition, I’m
absolutely overwhelmed that we’re being
recognised by one of the best Water
Treatment manufacturers in the world”
www.ecowatersofteners.co.uk
Let's celebrate together! Free entry, some of the children’s crafts are free.
Christmas cards, gifts and treats for sale as well as tickets sold for games, raffles and some
crafts.
Parental supervision required.
Tables for the event have been allocated already, so please come and support your local
TRAFFIC CONCERNS
Since moving to Great Cambourne nearly four years ago I
have noticed a marked increase in the weight and speed of
the traffic on Broad Street meaning that it sometimes takes a
couple of minutes before the road is clear enough to cross.
With entrances to residences, shops and side roads, traffic
comes from a number of different directions and, with the
added factor of two bus stops, it is sometimes difficult to get
a clear view of the road and the movement of the traffic.
Cambourne is a nice, safe place to live and it is refreshing to
see children out and about without adult supervision. This
does add to the concerns about safety when crossing the
road. If I find it difficult and frustrating to cross Broad Street,
surely it must be worse for the children?
I just wondered if anyone else thought that it would be a
good idea to pursue installing a pedestrian crossing on Broad
Street with the Council?
Baby & Me
NEEDS YOU!!
Baby and Me is in desperate need of volunteers for its
committee when the current committee step down in
December.
Being a committee member is not time consuming (an
evening meeting once a half term and a few other activities
depending on the role you take) and is also lots of fun!
The current committee will be leaving in December (as our
children will be two and far too old for Baby and Me!) and
in order for the group to continue a new committee must be
formed.
So if you come to Baby and Me and have enjoyed your time
there and would like to secure its future or you are a new
mum seeking a new challenge please let us know or sadly the
group will no longer be able to run in January.
If you feel you could spare the time to be on the new
committee please come and talk to us at a Baby and Me
session or contact Lynsey Brignell on Ibyton@hotmail.com
THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED
NEWS FROM CAMBOURNE FARMERS’ MARKET
Friday 19 September in glorious sunshine saw the
last of the Summer’s farmers’ markets. We were a
couple of stalls missing as these farmers had to
make the best of the good weather in this year of
late harvest due to the atrocious weather
beforehand, something we know all too well at
Cambourne farmers’ market.
We are unable to hold markets in October and
November as it will be too dark in the car park at
The Hub and we are unable to get into the hall due
to a prior booking. However, in December, the
hall is available and so we look forward to our
Christmas Special on Friday 19 th December when all
your old favourites will be back to help you
celebrate Christmas 2008 with great food and
lovely gifts for everyone. Put it in your diary now
and come along between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. to The
Hub on 19 December.
Attendance at the farmers’ markets has been
patchy, but we have kept going despite this and the
poor weather. Why not come along in December
and see what you have been missing? In the
meantime, a big thank you to everyone who has
supported the farmers’ market in Cambourne.
Cambourne School Pages
The Vine Inter-Church Primary School
In September 2007 The Vine School was lucky enough to be selected to be part of the Food for Life Programme
(www.foodforlife.org.uk/) and to work towards becoming a Flagship School. Since then we have been learning about
organic gardening, have visited a local farm and have introduced opportunities for cooking across the curriculum. Our Vine
Cafe has continued to work really hard to source local, organic food to prepare delicious school lunches and now serves
freshly baked wholemeal bread every day alongside the salads and fresh vegetables from the school garden.
The Cooking Bus has been developed in partnership with the Focus on Food Campaign to get across healthy eating and food
safety messages to school children in an engaging way. The visit from the Cooking Bus has been an excellent way to start
the new school year. During the week pupils, parents and staff have had an opportunity to cook on board the bus and have
proudly taken home a wonderful range of healthy, tasty food including beetroot and potato salad, cheese muffins and apple
and blackberry crumble. Sadly, there are too many parents and
pupils to fit onto the bus in just one week so we are delighted to have
been given a Cook It trolley with resources for groups of 6 pupils to
use to develop their cooking skills. We are looking forward to
producing wonderful meals, tasty snacks and healthy treats in the
weeks and months to come.
News from Monkfield Park Primary School
The new term has started successfully at Monkfield Park with everyone full of enthusiasm for the year ahead. We are always
amazed at how much the children have grown over the holidays and how keen they are to settle into their new classes.
We welcome several new members of staff to the school; Mrs Day teaching in Year 5, Mrs Acerini teaching in Year 3, Mrs
Weatherstone teaching in Year 4 and Miss Boyd and Mrs Boubker working as Teaching Assistants.
Both adults and children alike enjoyed a fun packed afternoon and early evening at the school’s Summer Fayre which took
place at the end of last term. The weather was very kind to us and this event was well supported by parents and carers from
within the school and the wider community. We would like to thank everyone for their continued support.
The children are going to be kept very active taking part in the after school clubs provided. They will be able to enjoy
football, fun fit, archery, fencing, uni-hoc, tag rugby, tri golf, basket ball and badminton. There will also be a craft club
where the children will be given the opportunity to create wonderful cards. For the musical amongst us there will be the
chance to take part in after school choirs and singing groups. This wide range of activities should provide all children with
the stimulus to come and get involved in some sort of extra curricular provision.
We will be having lots of visitors to the school during this term. Some of the children will be working with specialist sports
coaches in their PE lessons. Others will be benefiting from specialist language teachers and music specialists.
We will be celebrating International Day of Languages on Friday 26 th September when each classroom will be transformed
to represent a country and children will have a passport for the day to visit other countries.
If you have recently moved into the village and have a child due to start school, please could you make contact with the
school Finance and Office Manager: Mrs J Durrant on 01954 273377
COMBERTON VILLAGE COLLEGE: A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Whatever else we may have got up to over the summer, I suspect that very many of us followed the Olympics in some way or another.
Like I think so many others, I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated watching a great deal of the events, often with remarkable British
successes. It was all the more pleasing for providing regular breaks from some house decorating!
It will not be a surprise to hear that the Olympics formed some rich territory for early assemblies at the beginning of the school year. The
children were still very mindful of the events. The messages of the Olympics also have a great deal to commend themselves to the
education of young people. The official Olympics values of ‘Excellence, Friendship and Respect’ are strong and good values for any school
to wish to instil in its community. We can all aim for personal excellence; we all need to learn how to get on with others and to form
friendships; and we all must learn to respect and to understand other people and their cultures. For a Language College with the British
Council International School award, the symbolism of the five Olympic rings suggesting the coming together of the five continents of the
world seems highly appropriate. The remarkable training and dedication of the Olympians in their endeavour to achieve their best is a
strong message for all young people in their lives if they wish to achieve their best (personal excellence). Equally, the pictures of
disappointment of those not achieving what they wanted but then talking of what they would aim for now was a powerful lesson in the
importance of resilience and determination in life.
Some of the assemblies looked particularly at the wonderful event of the Paralympics. All the same values and lessons were clear there
also. However, it was a further opportunity to reflect on how we perceive disability and how we see people. Every person is a person
first of all and every person has abilities. Every person can achieve.
As well as the Olympics, a local cause for celebration was on the morning of 21 August when our former Year 11 students received their
GCSE results. I am pleased to report that there were very many delighted young people (as well as many happy parents) who were able
rightly to celebrate their fine achievements. Overall, their results were really good, once more representing some of the best in the country
by an all-ability school.
The latest phase of building work has, I am sure many of you will have noticed, started at the school. It is due for completion in summer
2009 ready for the next school year. It will provide very badly needed further accommodation to help us to provide properly for young
people in the local area as we continue to face significant pressure for places from local demand. We continue to discuss earnestly with
all relevant parties about the further future developments that seem bound to be required, notably further schooling provision in the
Cambourne area tying in with a sixth form development so there is sufficient capacity for education for all in our local area. The
commitment of the college and its governors is to try to work to provide an outcome that benefits all and to play its part fully in this.
CAMBOURNE PRE-SCHOOL
The Ark, Jeavons Lane
HAPPY 5th BIRTHDAY!
Several years ago a group of parents highlighted the need for a pre-school in Cambourne. Thanks to their vision and determination, Cambourne Preschool
is celebrating its 5th birthday this year.
The Staff team and the older children have been busy welcoming the new intake of children over the last few weeks. They have all settled in well and
are enjoying their first experiences of the school environment.
Following the launch of the new Early Years Framework at the beginning of this term, there have been some small changes to the way in which Preschool
is structured. The children now have access to the garden area at all times which is proving to be very popular with the children. They also have
the freedom to go into either of the 2 rooms in the Ark during the play sessions (previously a group of children accessed each room for a session and
then the groups swapped over).
A rolling snack time has also been introduced which lasts for an hour. The children are encouraged to be involved in the preparation of the snack and to
talk about what the see, smell, hear, feel and taste. Snacks include fresh fruit and some vegetables, dried fruit, bread & butter and milk or water. Children
will also have the opportunity around the snack hour to help in the preparation of a simple rice and vegetables dish using peppers, mushrooms, onions
etc.
Cambourne Pre-school offers a safe, stimulating, varied and fun environment in which the children can learn through play. Parental involvement is greatly
encouraged and a high staff/child ratio ensures a calm and supportive environment.
Cambourne Pre-school takes children from 2 years and 9 months of age. There are still a few sessions available for this year (particularly during the afternoon
sessions).
The Cambourne Children's Centre was officially opened
on September 1st. A fun day for parents and under 5s was
very well attended with an array of stalls and activities
such as story time, singing, dancing, heuristic play and
baby massage. One of the most popular events was a
teddy bears' hospital run by GPs and nurses from the local
surgery. Poorly teddies had their temperature and blood
pressure checked and their wounds bandaged. Chair of the
County Council, Councillor Orgee, assisted by 3 year old
Thomas, then completed the event by cutting a
celebratory cake.

NEW AIRCRAFT NOISE THREAT TO SUFFOLK AND SOUTH CAMBRIDGESHIRE
HALLOWEEN FUN?
Every year at Halloween children set out to visit
houses in their neighbourhood, often with their
parents or a responsible adult in charge to “trick or
treat”. Children dress up as ghosts, witches or
monsters, and many householders are happy to hand
over sweets and great fun is had by all.
But sometimes groups of children knock at the doors
whether they know the residents or not, with no
entertainment value and demand some sort of reward.
Vulnerable or older residents can be intimidated by
groups of noisy teenagers knocking at their door in the
dark. Some teenagers have taken up “egging”
throwing eggs at property or vehicles.
Where householders do not want a Halloween visit, it
would be a good idea to display the “No Trick or
Treat” sign available from the Cambridge
Constabulary website www.cambs.police.uk or any
police station.
The Message For Parents Is To Take
Responsibility For Their Children.
They should explain how vulnerable people can be
frightened by an unwanted group calling on a dark
evening and to only call where they know they will be
welcome and respect people’s privacy when there is a
“No Trick or Treat” sign on display.
Proposals to change flight paths and stacking areas across the region which would severely affect large swathes of Suffolk and
South Cambridgeshire would be compounded by plans for a second Stansted runway, campaign group Stop Stansted Expansion
said today.
to the aircraft stacking areas south of Newmarket and Stowmarket respectively, put forward in the recent NATS airspace change
proposals consultation. Meanwhile, flight paths indicated in the second runway plans differ only marginally from those being
put forward by NATS for coming years.
The NATS proposal drew a massive response from 15,000 individuals and almost 600 organisations across East Anglia. The
majority of the respondents (86%) opposed the proposal because of fears for the noise impacts on rural areas and the threat
to tranquillity. Yet many people in the area remain unaware that there is a bigger battle that needs to be fought to protect
rural peace longer term, now revealed by campaigners working through the second runway application with a fine toothcomb.
As a result, a warning is being issued that those who would be affected by the NATS plans should also be aware of the need
to make urgent representations on the second runway application by the 26 September deadline because of the impacts they
could suffer if the plans are allowed to proceed.
should recognise the major threat that would be posed by a second runway at Stansted with some half a million flights a year
The second runway expansion application which has been submitted by airport operator BAA would, if given permission,
enable Stansted to handle triple the number of planes currently using the airport, making it larger than Heathrow today.
Views on the second runway and related proposals should be sent to Uttlesford District Council which is handling the
application at UDC (Planning), London Road, Saffron Walden CB11 4ER or emailed to planning@uttlesford.gov.uk, with
plans in 2009. Further information is available on the Stop Stansted Expansion website at www.stopstanstedexpansion.com or
CAMBOURNE PARISH COUNCIL
District of South Cambridgeshire
Street Lighting
The Parish Council would like to ensure that street lights are fully working especially now that evenings are drawing in.
This is not necessarily straight forward as there are so many different responsible contractors.
Normally in villages reports would be made - just to the County Council.
In Cambourne the consortium are responsible for the main spine roads identified by the taller columns such as in School Lane,
Jeavons Lane, Monkfield Lane, Greenhaze Lane, Back Lane, Eastgate, Sterling Way and Brace Dein.
Individual builders such as Bovis, Taylor Wimpey, Persimmon, Charles Church, Bloor etc are responsible for housing area
roads and footpaths. Bollard lighting is the responsibility of residents living adjacent.
You are welcome to contact them yourselves, however all you need to do is contact the clerk who will acknowledge your
enquiry and contact the right one. It can still take a while, but you can be assured that action is being taken. If necessary a
system of tagging will be introduced. Councillor Dominic Plunkett has done an initial survey and identified 180 lights that are
out.
Cambourne’s Little Helpers
For most young people the start of the summer holidays means a chance to
rest and relax, but this was not the case for young people from Cambourne
church, who have been helping out in the community. Over one weekend
they helped out in two people's gardens (weeding, mowing the lawn etc) and
helped a family move house.
If you would like help with anything
whether it be gardening, lifting, computer
skills or whatever you can think of,
contact Jon Sanders (Cambourne church
youth worker) on 07729977463 or
jono_sanders@hotmail.com
The young people will always have two
adult leaders with them to supervise and
help out.

INGREDIENTS
SPOOKY HALLOWEEN PAGE
SPIDER CUP CAKES
1. 517 g chocolate cake mix
2. 455 g black shoestring liquorice
3. White frosting/icing
4. Circular sweets for eyes
5. Sweets for fangs
DIRECTIONS
Prepare cupcakes according to package directions. Let
cool completely.
Cut liquorice into 3 inch sections. Working with one or
two cupcakes at a time, so the frosting doesn't set before
decorating, frost the cupcakes with the white frosting.
Insert liquorice pieces into the outer edges of the
cupcakes to make the legs of the spider, 3 legs on each
side (4 takes up too much space). Place two sweets on
the front of the cupcake for fangs and use two circular
sweets as eyes. Repeat with remaining cupcakes.
APPLE OR DONUT BITE
GAME!
A game where you try to bite the
apple or donut without hands
You will need: Apples or Donuts.
Mop handle. Ribbon.
Tie curling ribbon to a small apple's
stem. Tie the other end of the
ribbon to a mop handle. Get in the
spirit -- and wrap the handle up in
orange and black gift wrap and
matching ribbon. Hang a new
apple for each player. The object is
to see who can grab the apple with
their teeth -- without hands! If you
want you can time each player to
see how long it takes. Shortest time
wins.
Sometimes the little ones have
trouble with hard apples. Donuts
work just as well -- just loop the
ribbon through the hole and
you're set.
COLOUR ME IN!
PEANUT BUTTER CRUNCH APPLES
INGREDIENTS
6 Granny Smith apples
6 wooden sticks
1 (14 ounce) package individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped
30 ml water
3 ml vanilla extract
240 g chopped peanut butter filled sandwich cookies
110 g milk chocolate, chopped
110 g white chocolate, chopped
DIRECTIONS - Insert wooden sticks 3/4 of the way into the stem end
of each apple. Place apples on a cookie sheet covered with lightly
greased aluminium foil.
Combine caramels and water in a saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring
often, until caramel melts and is smooth. Stir in the vanilla. Dip
each apple into the caramel and gently run apples around insides of
saucepan to scrape off some of the caramel. Scrape excess caramel
from the apple bottoms using the side of the saucepan.
Spread the chopped cookies out on a dinner
plate. Roll caramel apples in the cookies and
place on the aluminium foil. Place the milk
chocolate and white chocolate into separate
microwave-safe bowls. Heat in the microwave at
30 second intervals, stirring between each, until
melted and smooth. Drizzle milk chocolate over
the apples, then drizzle the white chocolate over
the milk chocolate. Refrigerate until ready to
serve.
MUMMY MAKER GAME
Be the first team to wrap your mummy!
Players: 6 or more players.
Needed: Toilet paper
Rules: This a kids Favourite! Divide the kids into smaller
groups. One kid in each group is the mummy and the others
wrap the mummy with toilet paper as fast as possible. You can
have a winner for the best mummy or a race for the fastest
mummy wrapped, or no winner at all. You need at least one
mummy per group and you could assign one kid to wrap
the legs, arms, etc.. or just let them go. Make sure to set
some ground rules. You might want to tell them
NOT to wrap the head or face and throwing
the rolls of toilet paper around the
room probably is not a good
idea!
CUT OUT FINGER PUPPET
ROASTED PUMPKIN SEEDS
Roasted pumpkin seeds have a nutty flavour and are
packed with protein and fibre. Pumpkin seeds are
delicious toasted and salted, but they're even better
flavoured with sweet and savoury spices.
HERE’S HOW TO DO IT
Rinse pumpkin seeds under cold water and pick out the
pulp and strings. (This is easiest just after you've
removed the seeds from the pumpkin, before the pulp
has dried.)
Place the pumpkin seeds in a single layer on an oiled
baking sheet, stirring to coat. If you prefer, omit the oil
and coat with non-stick cooking spray.
Sprinkle with salt and bake at 180 degrees C until
toasted, about 25 minutes, checking and stirring every
10 minutes.
Let cool and store in an air-tight container.
to the season. Manager - Steve
Eagles Under 9 – This will be their third
season playing together and the
improvements seen since the very early
days have been incredible and are a
credit to the hard work put in by the
players. After a very successful season
last year, and with a couple of changes
of personnel it is going to be interesting
to see how they progress this year. The
season started well with an impressive
6-3 home win against Bar Hill Colts on
the opening day of the season which
the boys really enjoyed. It is to be
hoped that we can continue this form
throughout the winter. If you want to
follow our progress then our next
home game is on 18th November
against Gamlingay United so please
come along and watch.
Having won the first game of the
season, beating Bar Hill 6-3. After a
successful first season they are hoping
Eagles Under 10 – The first game was
home against Swavesey Spartans.
Manager – Jason Mackenzie
Eagles Under 11 - With a few members
of the team moving on last season, it
has been a struggle to fill their places.
However we are pleased to welcome
Luke Humm, Emil Gronlund and Isaac
Choong to the our current team
consisting of Faheem Jeewoth, Ben
Roach, Sam Roach, Sam Coulson, Jack
O'Reilly, Charlie Edwards, Ryan
Cooke, Alex Jenvey and Mark
Robinson. We are looking forward to
the new season with local derbies
against Comberton and Papworth.
The 11's are also in the knockout cup
which all under 11's in the Cambs FA
league participate in, so we are hoping
to have a good run in that.
However, we are always looking to
strengthen the squad so if you are
interested in joining us, the 11's train on
Eagles Under 13 – After winning
promotion as League Champions and
winning the Knock Out Cup last
season, the Under 13s are hoping to
continue their winning ways this
season. The first game this season was
at home against Milton which Eagles
won 3-1 after a fine performance.
Manager – Mark Gibbs
Eagles Under 14 – A new season, a new
league. Eagles U 14 won promotion last
season so are looking forward to
playing in a very competitive league.
The season started away to a strong
Balsham Colts team eventually winning
7-3 (C Racher 3, H Harrison 3, J
Doidge). The second game was at
home to Priory Parkside B which Eagles
won 4-0 (H Harrison 2, C Edmonds, M
Hunter). So, a good solid start to the
season.
The Eagles squad has been added to
during the close season, with Charlie
Wetton-Smith, Huw Gordon and Nick
Garbutt joining. We hope these players
will give us the extra strength needed
for Eagles to have a successful season.
Manager – Steve Doidge
Eagles Under 15 – After a turbulent
close season Eagles U15 have started
the season playing the top two teams,
unfortunately losing both games. We
are sure they will turn this blip around
in the next game as they have a good
squad of players. Manager – Matt
Clowery
Academy – Cambourne Eagles are
looking to set up an Academy for
younger players to learn football
through fun and creative training.
These players would be pre Under 8s.
The new season for Cambourne Exiles RFC kicked off on September 6th with an
encouraging start against Biggleswade RUFC 2's. This friendly fixture gave the Exiles
chance to try out some old hands in new positions and some new players making their
debut for the club.
Taking such an experimental approach it was unsurprising that Cambourne suffered a
defeat at the hands the Biggleswade outfit. Despite the 46:10 scoreline, the Exiles retired
to the clubhouse in high spirits after an enjoyable game.
The following week at Sawston, Cambourne found it harder to find their feet on the
pitch. Facing another experimental Exiles lineup, Sawston 2's seemed better able to take
The Pike Anglers of Cambourne
Contact us @ cambourne.piking@hotmail.co.uk or @ thepikers.net
This month I would like to share with you details of some of the monster pike that have graced a selected number of anglers’ nets, and
their captors, over the past few decades.
Firstly, I will start with the current British record which now stands at a massive 46lb 13ozs. This pike was caught by a Mr Ray Lewis on
the18th October 1992, from Llandegfedd Reservoir in Wales.
Unfortunately, as I read, some UK anglers have refused to accept Ray’s pike as the current British record. These believe that Tommy
Morgan is the true holder of that title. Tommy had recorded a fish of 47lb 11ozs which was caught from Loch Lomond in 1945. This
also stands as the largest rod and line-caught pike in Scotland. So make of that what you will…
A number of large pike have come from Llandegfedd over the years, and here are just a few:
45lb 6ozs caught by G.Edwards in March 1990; 44lb 8ozs caught by C.Garrett in October 1988; 44lb 0ozs caught by S.Gilham in
October 1988; 43lb 2ozs caught by B.Ingrams in October 1988; 42lb 5ozs caught by P.Climo in October 1988; and 40lb 0ozs caught
by M.Cooke in October 1996. Who knows, maybe one day one of us will be on a list similar to that…
Anyhow, Nigel and I decided to book a day’s pike fishing at Northamptonshire’s Pitsford Reservoir. It was the first time that either of
us had fished there, so it was always going to be a tough challenge for us. No surprise then that we did struggle a little. The weather
was very overcast and blustery, and we had considered that these would be ideal conditions. Oh well, ho hum.
Maybe after a couple more visits to Pitsford our catches will improve somewhat. At least Nigel did manage to catch his first Pitsford
pike, albeit a small one. And it was one more than I caught. I did, however, manage to hook a fish that day on a fox darter spoon,
but after a short fight we parted company. Overall, we were quite pleased with our first encounter, and certainly look forward to
returning soon.
A wet and windy Saturday in September saw us return to Ardleigh Reservoir in Colchester. Another slow day was had but at least we
did not go home empty-handed, which was the main thing. After chucking every lure we had in our buckets at them, Nigel got out an
old reliable fish catcher of his, a roach pattern, storm soft bait.
First cast and “BANG” fish on, and after a short fight a nice pike of around 7lb was safely boated. This was the only action we had seen
for the next few hours until packing-up time. I was all set to call it a day when I used that famous saying…“right last cast for me
then”…and after a half a dozen turns of my reel and using my new fox gladiator spoon I was into a fish, at last.
Although this pike may not have been the biggest pike in the reservoir, nor the biggest I have caught, it was nevertheless more than
welcome on a very challenging day.
This season the third year of the Predator Cup will be commencing on Saturday October 25 th. The first round venue has yet to be
determined, so any anglers who would like to join us could also suggest potential venues to try. Remember, the Cup challenge will run
over 6 outings only, starting in October and running through until March.
So, until next time, good fishing. Stu
