Page 28 Cambourne School Pages The Vine Inter-Church Primary School In September 2007 The Vine School was lucky enough to be selected to be part of the Food for Life Programme (www.foodforlife.org.uk/) and to work towards becoming a Flagship School. Since then we have been learning about organic gardening, have visited a local farm and have introduced opportunities for cooking across the curriculum. Our Vine Cafe has continued to work really hard to source local, organic food to prepare delicious school lunches and now serves freshly baked wholemeal bread every day alongside the salads and fresh vegetables from the school garden. The Cooking Bus has been developed in partnership with the Focus on Food Campaign to get across healthy eating and food safety messages to school children in an engaging way. The visit from the Cooking Bus has been an excellent way to start the new school year. During the week pupils, parents and staff have had an opportunity to cook on board the bus and have proudly taken home a wonderful range of healthy, tasty food including beetroot and potato salad, cheese muffins and apple and blackberry crumble. Sadly, there are too many parents and pupils to fit onto the bus in just one week so we are delighted to have been given a Cook It trolley with resources for groups of 6 pupils to use to develop their cooking skills. We are looking forward to producing wonderful meals, tasty snacks and healthy treats in the weeks and months to come. We are always amazed at how much the children have grown over the holidays and how keen they are to settle into their new classes. We welcome several new members of staff to the school; Mrs Day teaching in Year 5, Mrs Acerini teaching in Year 3, Mrs Weatherstone teaching in Year 4 and Miss Boyd and Mrs Boubker working as Teaching Assistants. Both adults and children alike enjoyed a fun packed afternoon and early evening at the school’s Summer Fayre which took place at the end of last term. The weather was very kind to us and this event was well supported by parents and carers from within the school and the wider community. We would like to thank everyone for their continued support. The children are going to be kept very active taking part in the after school clubs provided. They will be able to enjoy football, fun fit, archery, fencing, uni-hoc, tag rugby, tri golf, basket ball and badminton. There will also be a craft club where the children will be given the opportunity to create wonderful cards. For the musical amongst us there will be the chance to take part in after school choirs and singing groups. This wide range of activities should provide all children with the stimulus to come and get involved in some sort of extra curricular provision. We will be having lots of visitors to the school during this term. Some of the children will be working with specialist sports coaches in their PE lessons. Others will be benefiting from specialist language teachers and music specialists. We will be celebrating International Day of Languages on Friday 26 th September when each classroom will be transformed to represent a country and children will have a passport for the day to visit other countries. Cambourne School Pages COMBERTON VILLAGE COLLEGE: A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Whatever else we may have got up to over the summer, I suspect that very many of us followed the Olympics in some way or another. Like I think so many others, I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated watching a great deal of the events, often with remarkable British successes. It was all the more pleasing for providing regular breaks from some house decorating! It will not be a surprise to hear that the Olympics formed some rich territory for early assemblies at the beginning of the school year. The children were still very mindful of the events. The messages of the Olympics also have a great deal to commend themselves to the education of young people. The official Olympics values of ‘Excellence, Friendship and Respect’ are strong and good values for any school to wish to instil in its community. We can all aim for personal excellence; we all need to learn how to get on with others and to form friendships; and we all must learn to respect and to understand other people and their cultures. For a Language College with the British Council International School award, the symbolism of the five Olympic rings suggesting the coming together of the five continents of the world seems highly appropriate. The remarkable training and dedication of the Olympians in their endeavour to achieve their best is a strong message for all young people in their lives if they wish to achieve their best (personal excellence). Equally, the pictures of disappointment of those not achieving what they wanted but then talking of what they would aim for now was a powerful lesson in the importance of resilience and determination in life. Some of the assemblies looked particularly at the wonderful event of the Paralympics. All the same values and lessons were clear there also. However, it was a further opportunity to reflect on how we perceive disability and how we see people. Every person is a person first of all and every person has abilities. Every person can achieve. As well as the Olympics, a local cause for celebration was on the morning of 21 August when our former Year 11 students received their GCSE results. I am pleased to report that there were very many delighted young people (as well as many happy parents) who were able rightly to celebrate their fine achievements. Overall, their results were really good, once more representing some of the best in the country by an all-ability school. The latest phase of building work has, I am sure many of you will have noticed, started at the school. It is due for completion in summer 2009 ready for the next school year. It will provide very badly needed further accommodation to help us to provide properly for young people in the local area as we continue to face significant pressure for places from local demand. We continue to discuss earnestly with all relevant parties about the further future developments that seem bound to be required, notably further schooling provision in the Cambourne area tying in with a sixth form development so there is sufficient capacity for education for all in our local area. The commitment of the college and its governors is to try to work to provide an outcome that benefits all and to play its part fully in this. Stephen Munday CAMBOURNE PRE-SCHOOL The Ark, Jeavons Lane HAPPY 5th BIRTHDAY! Several years ago a group of parents highlighted the need for a pre-school in Cambourne. Thanks to their vision and determination, Cambourne Preschool is celebrating its 5th birthday this year. The Staff team and the older children have been busy welcoming the new intake of children over the last few weeks. They have all settled in well and are enjoying their first experiences of the school environment. Following the launch of the new Early Years Framework at the beginning of this term, there have been some small changes to the way in which Preschool is structured. The children now have access to the garden area at all times which is proving to be very popular with the children. They also have the freedom to go into either of the 2 rooms in the Ark during the play sessions (previously a group of children accessed each room for a session and then the groups swapped over). A rolling snack time has also been introduced which lasts for an hour. The children are encouraged to be involved in the preparation of the snack and to talk about what the see, smell, hear, feel and taste. Snacks include fresh fruit and some vegetables, dried fruit, bread & butter and milk or water. Children will also have the opportunity around the snack hour to help in the preparation of a simple rice and vegetables dish using peppers, mushrooms, onions etc. Cambourne Pre-school offers a safe, stimulating, varied and fun environment in which the children can learn through play. Parental involvement is greatly encouraged and a high staff/child ratio ensures a calm and supportive environment. Cambourne Pre-school takes children from 2 years and 9 months of age. There are still a few sessions available for this year (particularly during the afternoon sessions).
