Mini Leagues is simple each league typically comprises four people and everyone plays each other in a best of three set match
once during the month. At the end of the month there will be promotions and relegations. Certain periods during the year
become more congested, such as holiday periods or when the winter and summer league club matches are taking place.
This month I would like to share with you details of some of the monster pike that have graced a selected number of anglers’ nets, and
their captors, over the past few decades.
Firstly, I will start with the current British record which now stands at a massive 46lb 13ozs. This pike was caught by a Mr Ray Lewis on
the18th October 1992, from Llandegfedd Reservoir in Wales.
Unfortunately, as I read, some UK anglers have refused to accept Ray’s pike as the current British record. These believe that Tommy
Morgan is the true holder of that title. Tommy had recorded a fish of 47lb 11ozs which was caught from Loch Lomond in 1945. This
also stands as the largest rod and line-caught pike in Scotland. So make of that what you will…
A number of large pike have come from Llandegfedd over the years, and here are just a few:
45lb 6ozs caught by G.Edwards in March 1990; 44lb 8ozs caught by C.Garrett in October 1988; 44lb 0ozs caught by S.Gilham in
October 1988; 43lb 2ozs caught by B.Ingrams in October 1988; 42lb 5ozs caught by P.Climo in October 1988; and 40lb 0ozs caught
by M.Cooke in October 1996. Who knows, maybe one day one of us will be on a list similar to that…
Anyhow, Nigel and I decided to book a day’s pike fishing at Northamptonshire’s Pitsford Reservoir. It was the first time that either of
us had fished there, so it was always going to be a tough challenge for us. No surprise then that we did struggle a little. The weather
was very overcast and blustery, and we had considered that these would be ideal conditions. Oh well, ho hum.
Maybe after a couple more visits to Pitsford our catches will improve somewhat. At least Nigel did manage to catch his first Pitsford
pike, albeit a small one. And it was one more than I caught. I did, however, manage to hook a fish that day on a fox darter spoon,
but after a short fight we parted company. Overall, we were quite pleased with our first encounter, and certainly look forward to
returning soon.
A wet and windy Saturday in September saw us return to Ardleigh Reservoir in Colchester. Another slow day was had but at least we
did not go home empty-handed, which was the main thing. After chucking every lure we had in our buckets at them, Nigel got out an
old reliable fish catcher of his, a roach pattern, storm soft bait.
First cast and “BANG” fish on, and after a short fight a nice pike of around 7lb was safely boated. This was the only action we had seen
for the next few hours until packing-up time. I was all set to call it a day when I used that famous saying…“right last cast for me
then”…and after a half a dozen turns of my reel and using my new fox gladiator spoon I was into a fish, at last.
Although this pike may not have been the biggest pike in the reservoir, nor the biggest I have caught, it was nevertheless more than
welcome on a very challenging day.
This season the third year of the Predator Cup will be commencing on Saturday October 25 th. The first round venue has yet to be
determined, so any anglers who would like to join us could also suggest potential venues to try. Remember, the Cup challenge will run
over 6 outings only, starting in October and running through until March.
So, until next time, good fishing. Stu
