These were closed until the river rose to a fixed height, when they were opened by cutting away the dam of earth which separated them from the Nile. It would seem not improbable that the gift of the tan, or cnix ansata—as it has been called—to the Sovereign at his Coronation may have been intended to signify the bestowal on him by the gods of a typical key of the waters of the Nile, i.e., that it was a token of supreme power ; thus it would not unnaturally be regarded as a sign of life, for without it the land could not yield its increase. In like manner, the tau or cross may have come to be worshipped as the symbol of light and generation, or feared as an image of decay or death. At first sight it is not very apparent why the scarab—the beetle should have been sacred to the Egyptians ; but if we examine one of these insects, we shall find that the sutures down the back and across the thorax form a T. Curiously enough, the peasantry in some parts of England call this insect the tor or dor beetle. The carpet alluded to in Chapter IV. as being in the writer's possession, and coming from Khotan in Yarkand, is bordered with Svastikas of the Chinese form. It is worthy of remark that when, as in this instance, a Chinese Svastika is placed in a square (as in the enclosed sketch), the interven- ing spaces form T's or taus. Certain Hindu ascetics in India, who are in the habit of sitting for days and nitrhts tooêther in a Buddha-like attitude on the ground, use a kind of crutched cross in the form of a tan on which to rest their arms. Some Connectinor Links 6 in Kashmir, situated about a couple of miles higher up the river than the European quarter of Srinagar. It is most singular to find here such symbols as the Cross and the Svastika on a Muhammedan building. The boat people say it was erected in the time of the Emperor Jahangir, who reigned from 1605 to 1628.
