Turn of the Century Sewing Class, Chautauqua, NY I found a photograph of this group of young ladies, sitting on a porch obviously sewing clothes for their dolls. Their hats and shawls are hung on a rack behind them. The girl standing is reading to the others. Is she reading Bible verses or sewing instructions? I made a pen and ink drawing of the scene and then a photo screen print on beige fabric.
Chautauqua Hanging, 2 This hanging was made with photo screen prints taken directly from the illustrations in a Harper’s New Monthly magazine c. 1870. The original images were line-cuts and they translated very well into screen prints. I printed them with black ink onto white fabric. The images show the article title “Chautauqua”, various scenes around the campground and another portrait of John Heyl Vincent.
