I4 which fiave bright silverv patches on the femora. The larva is very similar to that of T. bvevipalpis (not included in this synopsis). ADUI,T. Female, Head covered with azure blue scales in front, black behind. An- tennae, palpi and proboscis from dark brown to black, proboscis very long and slender, about 14 times as long as the palpi which are very short; tori of antennae may be paler brown. Thorax, ilplz and &!VZ yellowish brown, for scaling see above. Dorsally the mesonotum is covered with very narrow, black scales. There may be a few broad, black scales over the wing roots. Pleura hrnmn -- - .’ --, the ---- d-w-nnnlwlrnn -__-__r------large117 covered with flatlying, silvery scales and a white patch on mesepimeron. This mesepimeral patch I-aries in size: specimens from Upper Digul River have a very large patch, specimens from Xen- Guinea North Coast (not Fig. 8. Tv’pteroides bimzcu?i#es, details of larva: (n) head, (b) preclypeal spines, nore enlarged, stated which part of it) have the patch much reduced, LEE (1945) mentions that specimens from Hollandia commonly had a reduced patch; scutellum with flat black scales forming a patch on each lobe. As well as the ornamentation mentioned above there is a large sil\-ery lateral area extending from base to apex of T II.
--- Male. Similar to female except for characters of the terminalia. LARVA. Head rounded, preclypeal spines bent, thick; dorsal head-hairs all simple. &Antenna short, straight, antenna1 hair subapical. Thorax and abdomen thickly covered with stellate black hairs, 14 to IS branched, the branches sparsely and very finely frayed and ending in 2 or 3 divergent tips. Mesothoracic spine simple (Fig. 8e), metathoracic spine with 3 or 4 teeth (see Fi g. 8f) ; both BRUG and LEE mention 3 teeth; a specimen from Ceram had 3 on one side and 4 on the other. Comb of the 8th abdominal segment of over 20 teeth; BRUG gives 14 teeth of a different shape, the subdorsal ones very strong; towards the venter they gradually decrease in size. The shape of the individual tooth is irregular, as given by LEE, the more dorsal having a rather squarish basal plaque sur- mounted by a strong pointed spine. Those towards the ventral surface are finely spinose, particularly at the apex. The siphon is swollen on basal third, narrow on apical third, with ten to twelve bifid ventral tufts and about IO pecten spines, and lthere is an irregular series of dorsal and dorsolateral hairs which are from 2-6 branched. LEE gives these hairs as z-branched, occasionally a hair is single. The saddle of the anal segment is strongly chitinized but not all round ventrally. :Apical margin of saddle with a row of strong large spines ; saddle hair 4-branched, -bifid as given by BRUG and by LEE, ventral brush represented by a pair of 5-branched hairs ; isc y-branched and osc single (see Fig. SC), Note. The above description differs from those given by BRCG (1934) and by LEE (1945). It may be, that bimaczrZi$m larvae from different localities differ morphologically, or several morphological differences may represent so many separate species or varieties. The locality from which BRUG’S described larval skins came from, is not known. LEE examined specimens from such widely separated places as Cairns (Australia), Milne Bay (Eastern Xew Guinea) and Hollandia, and found them all fitting in with his description. The description given above is of a larval skin from Ceram. BIOXO~IICS. The species bites during the day in scrub and around jungli margin. The larvae have been found in coconut husks, tree holes, bamboo stumps and in Sepelz- thes; LEE adds artificial containers such as tin cans. DISTRIBCTIOK. Xoluccas, New Guinea. Tripteroides (Tripteroides) powelli I~udlow 1909 The anterior pronotal lobes are without brightly coloured scales; the femora are spotted; wing scales not very dense and rather narrow. ,%DULT. Female. Head with a broad area of flat, metallic deep blue scales on anterior half of dorsal surface, dark scales behind, forked on the nape; proboscis very long. A@ covered with dark brown, flat scales; integument of mesonotum dark brown in the middle, pale in front and at the sides, but this colouring rather x-ariable. Scutal scales dark brown and all narrow curved ; scutellar scales flat, dark brown; pleura from dark brown to paler with white, flat scales. Legs with coxae and trochanters almost white, with few dark scales; femora all light ventrally, dark brown dorsally, with 2 brilliant white spots on the front legs; mid-legs with a basal white line extending nearly half the length of the femora, with two white spots towards apex; hind femora, with 2 white spots, otherwise the legs are very dark brown, though in certain lights they may seem paler. Abdomen dark scaled dorsally with lateral silvery patches, which may form complete bands on some of the segments. Sternites pale golden scaled except ST711 ivhich is dark scaled. Male.
