Prevention of Kernicterus<br />

• Can likely prevent kernicterus in most healthy, full term infants<br />

by ensuring adequate feeding, monitoring of TSB/TcB,<br />

education of parents, identifying infants at risk for severe<br />

hyperbilirubinemia and timely outpatient follow up within 24-<br />

48 hours of discharge<br />

• However, kernicterus may occur, despite appropriate<br />

monitoring and management, in an infant with prematurity,<br />

G6PD deficiency, sepsis, asphyxia, genetic predisposition or<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r unknown neurotoxicity factors<br />

• “Sentinel event” ? YES, TSB of 30 mg/dL or higher
