Always a
brilliant
night and this year was no
different. We sold out of
tickets very quickly and I do
apologise to anyone who
missed out but I will remind
you, get in quick next time!
Congratulations to the Fire
Brigade whom not only
helped set up for the night but
had the audacity to take First
place with Grease Lightning
and Second place, Manuel the
Bandito. Both your moves
and props were excellent and
what great team building for
the crew.
Third place was won by the
“Benthams” and the
“Andrews”. Awesome
entertainment and the
costumes absolutely wicked.
To all of the contestants, you
guys rocked. Who would
have thought we could top
last year, but there you go.
As always a big thanks to all
of our helpers on the night,
we certainly know who you
are and are certain such a
successful event like this is
made by people like you.
I was thinking we had
raised about $6000 but as
we get along I feel that
we have probably made
$7000 which blows the
committee away.
We ask you, how can we
stop such a good
fundraiser?
Some acts have said
they have done their
dash. So if you have
ever had the thought
I’d like to give it a go,
now is the time to get
serious. We will be
back next year if we
have at least 4 new
acts…. So the
Challenge is set!
Walk around town with the WDC
WHATS HAPPENING
AROUND TOWN?
You may have noticed a rather frozen looking group of
WDC and PPT members walking the streets of Piopio at
7am on a frosty morning a month ago. A breakfast
meeting was organised by WDC members following the
Council meeting we attended at the end of May. We
were very pleased to be joined by Mayor, Brian Hanna,
CEO Chris Ryan, Community Development Manager
Rebecca Whitehead, and representatives from several
different WDC departments. We visited many key sites
around town, giving WDC a clearer picture of our plan
for the next 5 years and enabling us to get answers to
many important questions pertinent to our progress.
We thank WDC for their time and input to what was
agreed to be a very valuable meeting for both parties.
New Main Street Art work
A huge thank you to Rob Hallam and the carpentry
students who have constructed 4 new large frames for
the remaining artwork we planned to go up in the town.
They have made the frames and easels with more
timber from Peter Demchy and they look awesome!
We have contacted several ‘artists’ regarding new
artwork for selection and plan to have the new work up
in time for the World cup rugby traffic.
If you know of an artist who lives/has lived in Piopio that
may be interested in submitting work for selection that
is in line with our ‘rural theme’ throughout the town,
please let me know ( on nicky@piopiovets.co.nz or 07
8778106) and I will email the details to them.
Piopio College ASB Projects
We were pleased to hear that both Miss Lee and Mrs
Oram’s classes are entering this competition this year.
Both classes are looking at projects to further improve
areas within our town. It is exciting to see so many
young people interested in making a difference with in
their town! We hope to have an overview of their
projects for you in the next edition of Birdtalk.
Look out for Chris Dunphy and his groups outstanding
work from last year on the side of the Tui Park toilet
block over the next week. Everything has now been
completed and paid for and I can guarantee it will liven
up that part of town!
WHAT IS PIOPIO DOING FOR THE RUGBY
WORLD CUP?
I asked for ideas from the community in the last edition
of Birdtalk and was disappointed to receive only one
reply from a town I thought actually had a few rugby
followers and a bit of drive?!
Tracey Neal had a great idea of putting up flags from all
of the World cup countries along the Main Street –she
found a website for small flags but maybe we could get
some large flags to go on the poles that our Xmas
banners go on as well? Anyone keen to follow that one
up? Big thanks for your ideas and contributions Tracey.
Jenny Yates and I also got onto the topic with our new
Birdtalk editors and suggestions from that meeting
were to hang strings of triangular shaped black and
white flags across the Main street (anyone good at
sewing? have lots of black and white material/shade
cloth??) and putting up a goal post either end of town
with a huge rock in the shape of a rugby ball. We have a
few scouts out looking around the countryside for ‘rocks
that look like a rugby ball’ but we would welcome any
help or other ideas-and fast! September is not far away.
Thanks for Shopping Local signs
You will notice these new round stickers on the shop
windows. This is an adaptation of an idea Robin Elliot
saw in another town. We agreed with his thoughts on
how it creates unity amongst our shop owners and also
promotes our town as a friendly place. (Note: We did
this design ourselves as although we want to keep a
high standard in whatever we do, we would rather save
Ellie Voyce has been the editor, co ordinator, creative mind, behind our community
Birdtalk newsletter for the last 3 years and has been the longest
standing editor since Birdtalk was restarted again in 2006.
(Continued on page 3)
Thankyou
Editing a newsletter like this takes a significant amount of time –not just collating all the articles
and fitting them in to a 12 to 16 page format, but finding people to write the articles, reminding
people to get the articles in on time (to get it to the printers and couriers on time) and
then finding interesting photos etc to fill in any gaps.
PPT are very appreciative of all the work Ellie has done over the last 3 years and sincerely
thank her on behalf of the community for enabling this important community ‘link’ to con-

Facelift for Kara Park toilets
We would like to see the proposed Kara Park toilet
facelift be in keeping with the ‘rural’ theme running
through the town-with chunky timber and a simple
yet effective design. We like the Kawakawa toiletsmore
than just a toilet!! If you have any interesting
design ideas, please don't hesitate to email them to
me or call in to see me at the Vet clinic, Ian at KC
Honda or Peter at the garage. We would love to get
some new toilet design ideas from the Community!
Disappointing response :(
I must admit it is a bit disheartening when we ask
time and time again for feedback/ideas for projects
in Piopio and we get no response. We try our best
to keep thinking of ideas and keep things
progressing but there is a limit to what our small
group can achieve with businesses and families to
keep going also. Although our goal would be to see
some more small groups form, taking over other
aspects of development as the very successful Hall,
Marketing and Landscaping groups have done,
even just some feedback on ideas such as the Kara
Park toilets, the World cup rugby, the idea of a Coop
shop (as mentioned in the last Birdtalk, with
salamis, cheeses, shoes, fresh veges, etc.) would be
great. I hope August may just be a better month!
In the meantime, we will charge on with the ideas
we have.
We are very grateful to Donna Pari and Donna
Bentham for offering to take over both the editing
and advertising of Birdtalk. As happened when both
Sandy and Ellie took over this job, I am sure we will
see a few interesting new ideas emerge as our new
editors get into this job.
Our Changes of
Officers was held on 13
July and Noel Verry is our
President for 2011-2012.
As usual we took our food
caravan to the Mystery Creek
Fieldays in June. This involves a huge amount of work for
us, one day setting the caravan up, 4 days selling food at
the Fieldays, and then one day cleaning up.
We had four local organisations helping us this year. The
Piopio Hall committee, the Hunt Club, the Kapahaka
Group and CHEWS. These organisations received $650
each for their days work. Although we are there to work
and make money for our club, this can be a fun day out.
Last month we also donated $1250 to the Piopio Retirement
Village towards bathroom extractor fans for the
units.
Earlier in the year we donated $400 to Piopio College for
their Citizenship Award and $500 to the Lions Cancer
Lodge. The Club has made previous donations to the
Cancer Lodge.
The Lions club supported two local students on AFS
Trips, and Chase Muraahi and Michael Downy came to
our March meeting and gave us a well presented and humorous
report on their overseas trips. The Lions club
gets great satisfaction in being able to assist our local
young people in this way.
In April we travelled to Mangatautari reserve and had a
dinner at Out in the Styx restaurant for
our Ladies Night and although the
weather wasn't the best, some
of our members and ladies
went for a walk through the
reserve. It was a very informative
and enjoyable evening.
We are always on the look
out for new members .
CEMETERY
I
remember
the Cemetery
in its raw state –
long grass, fern and even blackberry,
especially the top left hand area,
known then as the Catholic section.
Next I remember was the period when
Cliff and Lorraine Percival, living across
the road, became caretakers. Cliff was
the grave digger and grazier and
Lorraine held the Council plans so she
could mark out graves. She frequently
helped visitors find headstones and
graves. Whenever there was a funeral,
she would mow the area and give the
place a general tidy up. I don’t think
the people of Piopio realised how
much time and effort the Percivals volunteered
during that time.
Then came a change – the Waitomo
District Council took over. The first I
knew was a letter from Steve Parry,
probably Parks and Reserves Manager
during Wally Bain’s period as Mayor.
He obviously had done a survey of the
Cemetery and suggested that next of
kin tidy up some of the graves, referring
mainly to the broken body concrete.
Zena and I took up the suggestion. We
decided to upgrade the graves of
Zena’s Great Uncle William Kilmartin
(d 1926, aged 75 years) and her Grandmother
Margaret Monaghan (d 1957,
aged 80 years). With help of Cliff Percival’s
tractor and two shovels, we had
PAGE 6
THE MEMORIES LIVE ON
the broken concrete away in no time.
In respect we left the headstones in
place and informed the undertaker.
Now we have clean headstones on a
new concrete berm – great for the
mower men! I took photos for the relatives,
informing them of the $600 cost.
We were reimbursed in no time. One
of them – Zena’s Aunty Nancy Thompson
(her husband Gordon was a mechanic
in Ted Andrews Garage for
years), wrote us a lovely letter saying
how thrilled she was to know we had
upgraded her Mother’s grave.
I then turned to the Neal family headstones
armed with 30 Seconds, a
shearer’s brush and water. The work
was easy and so rewarding. Just below
my parents’ grave was a bluey-grey
cross covered in moss. I cleaned that
and it turned out to be Tom Battley, a
neighbour, a friend and returned soldier,
invalided home from the Islands
with diarrhoea, a form that the doctors
couldn’t cure. He died in November
1945, aged 28 years. That headstone
means so much to me. Further along
the row I found Bassett Brown (d 1923,
aged 22 years). The morning of 14
April 1953 he and I were to represent
the Piopio Young Farmers’ Club at the
north King Country AGM starting 9am.
He didn’t turn up and I heard the sad
news at lunchtime that he had died in a
tractor accident that morning.
By now I realised how rewarding this
work was. I organised two working
bees to clean all the headstones. That
group found out how to restore the
silver printing on the headstones and
did at least 80. What a difference that
made.
In the year 2000, Ron Pollock, the
Council Parks & Reserves Manager,
met our group at the Cemetery. He
had $2000 millennium money to spend
at Piopio. We suggested the Memorial
Wall and other improvements.
To me the Cemetery is a wonderful
place. Attached to each headstone
there is a story of a personality, a history
of a life, no matter how short or
how long – how troubled or how successful.
Six years ago I suggested to
Jim Laurenson that we compile a scrap
- book of the history of these people,
or stories, or perhaps just a poem or
verse from their next of kin. How valuable
it would be. I indexed the headstones
into three groups:
Those with family we knew
Those with family we’d need to
find
The 10 unmarked graves with no
information
Unfortunately Jim left the district and
the project stopped.
Now, my daughter Gwenda Bryant,
who lost her husband Jeff in an accident
last year, and is spending time at
the Cemetery, wants to carry on with
this work. I promise to help as much as
I can and I know she will soon muster
some enthusiastic helpers. I wish her
well.
The
Piopio
Community
up with funds from the Piopio Veterinary
Association members in
1996 and covers Piopio & districts
which includes Mairoa, Mahoenui,
Mokauiti, Kopaki, Oparure, Mangaotaki,
Aria, Mapiu, Awakino,
Benneydale and Rangitoto.
Each year in August the Trust invites
organisations and individuals
to apply for grants. The
$20,700.00 granted this past year
brings the total distributed in 15
years since the Trusts inception to
approximately $355,000.00.
This year we supported two local
students on AFS exchanges, the
Kapa Haka competition, helped
with refurbishment of local community
facilities such as the Retirement
Village, Benneydale Hall,
local schools and supported groups
such as the Toy Library, Pipe Band
and RSPCA.
The trustees try to find a balance
between maintaining the capital of
the Trust and achieving the aims of
the Trust by addressing the
“Charitable Purposes” by way of
grants.
The Trust defines the “Charitable
Purposes” that it can support as:
The advancement of education
The relief of poverty
Any other purpose beneficial to
the community in respect of persons
and organisations who at the
time of granting any benefit under
the terms of the Trust are resident
or established in the Piopio district.
With a diversified investment portfolio
and additional contributions
the fund now stands at approximately
$825,586.00 having grown
DISTRICT CHARITABLE TRUST CONTRIBUTES
from just under $500,000.00.
The Trustees are hopeful that
interested parties will support our
Trust by making donations to our
fund. The Trust is a registered
Charitable Trust and contributions
are deductible for tax purposes.
Attention has to be drawn to the
fact that with the donation of annual
accounts preparation and financial
advice from Bailey Ingham
Ltd, administration expenses are
extremely low. The compound
effect of the Trusts low administration
costs have greatly contributed
to the funds available for grants.
There has been considerable
change in the Trust Board’s membership.
Jon Nelson was elected
chairman when the Trust was set
up in 1996 and held that position
until he resigned in 2006 after 10
years. Mark Bentham then took
over that role and is the only original
member on the current board.
Mark has since resigned as chairperson
and Tuke Rauputu has
taken on this role. The current
Board members are Secretary/
Treasurer Chris Poole, Mark Bentham,
Peter Voyce, Richard Atkinson,
Derek Kloeten, Vicki Watson,
and Raewyn Williams
In the foreseeable future there
may be vacancies on the Trust
Board. If you think being part of
this valuable community organisation
is of interest to you and you
the three members mentioned
above.

PROMOTION DAY FOR THE INFORMATION
CENTRE & ART GALLERY
At present Ellie Voyce, Jenny Brodie, Val Connors and
Muoira Barry are our casual volunteers.
During the month of August the Gallery will be undergoing
a revamp. In the first week of September we will be
promoting the Piopio Info & Art Gallery with
brand new work, signage and opening specials.
So look out for the exciting changes in September
and start Christmas shopping early!
Our aim is to keep the Gallery open on a regular
basis four days a week. To make this possible we
are looking for support from the community to
help man the Gallery for a few hours a day on a
roster basis whenever suits. We already have
some new volunteers on board but need a few
more to spread the load.
We are also looking for other talented artists in
the area who would like to display and sell their
work, adding a new dimension to the Gallery for
the September promotion. It would be fantastic to support
other local talent in the area.
Please ring Muoira Barry 8778261 or Val Connors
8788102 if you would like to be involved in either of
the above.
