Thank you
so much!
By EMMA POTTINGER
IF Otorohanga toddler Tayler
Gailey could say ‘thank you’ . . .
she would.
Tayler has a rare and inoperable
brain tumour and radiation therapy
has not stopped the aggressive cancer
growing on her brain stem.
In a last ditch effort to help their
daughter, her parents Lisa and
Garth Gailey, along with Westpac
Bank staff in Te Kuiti and Otorohanga
launched a fundraising appeal
three weeks ago to send her
to a clinic in Mexico, which may
cure the condition. (Waitomo News,
October 27)
The Hope4Cancer Institute in Tijuana
provides an alternative treatment
called Salicinium therapy,
which it claims can kill cancer cells
by disrupting a key enzyme.
And the Gailey family needs
$60,000 to get there.
Thankfully, since the appeal’s
launch they are almost halfway
– with close to $30,000 already
raised.
The target took a major boost on
Thursday when a very generous
benefactor who wishes to remain
anonymous donated $20,000 to
Tayler’s fund.
It brings a huge ray of hope to the
two-year-old’s family.
“We so grateful, humbled and
floored by this amazing show of
generosity,” says Mrs Gailey, who
is a stay-at-home mum for Tayler
and her siblings Carter (7), Hunter
(5), and Archer (1).
An AB technician for Ultra-Scan,
Mr Gailey and his wife will also
take their three other children to
Mexico with Tayler.
The couple were born and raised
in Taumarunui, but moved to Otorohanga
four years ago.
Their parents remain in Taumarunui
and Mrs Gailey has relatives
in Piopio.
But since the shift, the young
couple now considers the northern
end of the King Country ‘home’.
Tayler’s plight
Tayler can’t stand without support,
walk unaided, or talk because
of the cancer and her parents have
been told she won’t reach her fourth
birthday.
Mrs Gailey noticed something
wrong with Tayler just before her
first birthday.
“She struggled to do things that
shouldn’t have been a struggle
and dragged one leg when she
crawled.
“We pestered doctors and specialists
for answers and discussed
Taylor’s developmental milestone
delays with Plunket.”
She was referred to the Child Development
Centre in Hamilton.
But it wasn’t until Tayler began
squinting at 13 months and her
eye turned inward that doctors
started to suspect something more
serious.
TO P3
TREASURED TIMES: Lisa Gailey and her daughter Tayler share a precious moment. The little tot and her family need $60,000
to travel Mexico for potentially lifesaving treament.
Piopio movie set firmly under wraps
ALL the action’s centred on Piopio’s
Mangaotaki Valley this week as a large
number of film crew, actors and extras begin
filming scenes for Sir Peter Jackson’s
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
Waitomo district residents rolled out
the red carpet late last week for the
movie’s stars and crew who are expected
to be in the area for a week.
But don’t expect to see Hollywood
heavyweights like Orlando Bloom or Sir
Ian McKellen (reprising their roles as
‘Legolas’ and ‘Gandalf’) wandering along
Moa St.
The Hobbit set is shrouded in secrecy.
Little is known about who is involved in
the Piopio segment being filmed on the
On the set yesterday, casting company
to comment on the film’s progress or
indeed anything, but in a huge marquee
surrounded by security, the buzz of a Hollywood
filming had begun. but The Hobbit’s
Plenty of positive moves in Waitomo
WELL . . . does it feel like some normality
has resumed after an extraordinary six weeks
of rugby?
It was as if the nation gave a collective sigh
of relief as the All Blacks squeaked home in an
intense final.
Congratulations to all involved in promoting
their towns as places to visit during the RWC
– Waitomo district has performed out of all proportion
to its size.
Special mention to Benneydale (‘Rugbydale’),
who picked up the first runner-up prize in the
REAL New Zealand Festival’s Best Street in NZ
competition.
New initiatives
I have developed some new initiatives which,
with council’s support we will be consulting with
you on in the near future.
I have had much discussion with Dale (Williams)
in regard to the workings of the Otorohanga
District Development Board, with the intention of
setting up a similar entity, to promote economic development
here.
I am a real fan, as we have many talented people in our
community, who don’t ever want to be on council, but would
like to contribute through an entity such as this proposed
one.
Also with only seven of us around the council table, we are
very busy, and as such often economic development opportunities
are overlooked. Also, it removes short-term political
interference from long-term strategic decision making.
I am also working on a concept of starting an annual ‘Civic
Awards’ ceremony, where we recognise people who have made
major contributions to our district over many years.
These people are often unsung heroes in our community,
and I want to see us celebrate these people and recognise
them for what they have contributed.
I hope to have this in place by March.
Inaugural youth council
At present we are promoting nominations for our inaugural
Youth Council among our young people, with the aim of
having this up and running by early next year.
We have had plenty of enthusiasm shown by our young
people, and want to involve them as much as we can in this
new initiative.
Last month we hosted the launch of the Social Sector Youth
THE North King Country is now served by
five more Justices of the Peace.
The new JPs were sworn in by Judge Peter
Spiller in the Te Kuiti District Court recently.
This is the largest number of JPs to take the
Oath of Office on a single day.
The new JPs are Waitomo district mayor Brian
Hanna, former mayor Mark Ammon, Sport
Waikato Otorohanga co-ordinator Robbie Matthews,
Prescott Toyota director Paul Prescott
of Otorohanga and River Run Products director
Greta Withers, also of Otorohanga.
Chairman of the North King Country branch
of the Waikato Justices of the Peace Association
Murray Loewenthal says the new JPs have been
chosen because they are of good character, are
well-known, widely held in good regard and support
a number of community organisations.
“It is important we have JPs who are acces-
Trials at the Waitomo Cultural & Arts Centre.
Te Kuiti is one of six towns in New Zealand
In My View that are part of a trial to achieve better youth
outcomes, with special focus on truancy, alcohol
and drug abuse, and reducing crime.
Hilary Karaitiana is the project’s co-coordinator,
and has put in a huge amount of work to
reach this stage.
The launch was a great success attended by
MPs Tariana Turia and MP Shane Arden.
We had a great turnout, and the governance
group was thrilled with the support of local
people, and our youth who turned up to support
what Hilary is doing.
The previous evening, Hilary organised an
‘Amazing Race’ which attracted more than 1000
By Waitomo Mayor participants, and was enjoyed by all.
Brian Hanna The governance group is now focused on the
hard work of putting the plan into action.
We are about to launch two initiatives to help
with youth employment.
Firstly, we have taken up an offer by Wintec to conduct a
survey of our businesses, to establish training and employment
needs, that they may need both in the present, and for
the future. This will be happening early this month.
Secondly, we are asking all businesses for any youth employment
opportunities, be it after school, of a temporary
nature, anything will be considered.
Having spent quite a bit of time with our youth recently,
the one common theme is jobs, whether they be permanent,
or after school help.
Velodrome decision
I want to support Mayor Dale’s comments about getting
in behind this decision now it has been made, and getting
the best out of it we can.
While we as a district may have not totally agreed with the
WRC’s decision, it has been made, so let’s move on.
I also echo Dale’s comments in regard to the performance
of our elected representatives on the Waikato Regional
Council. Councillor Stu Kneebone has been very active in
our district, attending many, many meetings and events, and
working very hard for his electorate, while councillor Russ
Rimmington has not attended any meetings in our area to
my knowledge, and certainly hasn’t met with our council.
We have had very good representation in the past, so it is
disappointing that this is now not the case.
Five new JPs for North King Country
sible to the public and who care
deeply about their communities,”
he says.
A Justice of the Peace is a voluntary
position.
They are appointed by the Government,
confirmed by the Governor-
General and trained in witnessing
signatures, certifying documents,
taking statutory declarations, affidavits
and affirmations.
Mr Loewenthal says the newlysworn
JPs have shown a genuine
desire to serve their communities,
understand others’ needs, are good
communicators, are able to make
sound judgments and are confident
dealing with all sectors of society.
“They have sworn to do right to
all manner of people after the laws
and usages of New Zealand without
fear or favour, affection or ill-will.
“JPs are not automatically appointed
as marriage celebrants,
though with further training they
may perform some court duties.”
There are now 38 JPs in the
North King Country.
Appealing sale
CHOPPER CHAPTER : Otorohanga Rotarians did a brisk trade at their annual secondhand
book sale last month to raise money for the region’s air ambulance. A total of $2100 was
donated to the Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance’s chopper appeal. The sale, which is an
annual fundraising event, generated much interest from book lovers, with most people
buying at least one book. Rotarian Les Phillips (left) with Rotary exchange student Trini
Lavini, was grateful for the community’s support. “The Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance
is an important charity, and people were very generous with their donations.”
The air ambulance launched a $3.5 million public appeal in April, to replace its aging
Bell222B helicopter. To date, almost $1.6 million has been raised.

Waitomo News – Tuesday, November 1, 2011 3
Thank you so much!
TIME IS TICKING: The Gailey family is battling to raise money
for a last-ditch effort to save the life of Tayler, struck down
with a rare and inoperable form of cancer.
FROM P1
“I knew something was wrong,” says Mrs Gailey. “Everything
was a struggle – it was impossible to teach her to walk,
she couldn’t talk.
“I remember worrying that Tayler would need glasses –
looking back now I wish that was all that was wrong.”
An MRI scan led to the diagnosis and radiation therapy.
Mrs Gailey says she worked herself up waiting. “I wasn’t
relieved but had a sense of knowing . . . our luck couldn’t
have been any worse.”
In February, two weeks after her second birthday, Tayler
underwent seven weeks of radiation treatment at Auckland’s
Starship Hospital s– 33 radiation sessions in less than two
months.
Mrs Gailey says her daughter was a real trooper. “I think
it would have been a lot harder if she was sick. If she was
stuck in hospital it would be different.
“Tayler isn’t sick, at the moment the tumour isn’t painful
for her. I don’t feel lucky but I’m glad she isn’t hooked to
machines all day long.”
Mrs Gailey says her little girl has coped as well as she
could. “She’s happy. I feel like her body has done well –
keeping the cancer at bay – but tumours grow rapidly and
we don’t have a lot of time.
“It’s just so unfair.”
Despite all of this in her short life, Tayler is your typical
happy-go-lucky two-year-old.
Like many little girls, she loves the television show Dora
the Explorer.
She loves reading books, drawing and her favourite foods
include peanut butter and bananas.
And, she loves to dress up –modelling hats, necklaces and
of course, a girl’s best friend . . . shoes.
Alternative treatment
While the tumour is inoperable the Hope4Cancer Institute
believes it has a 70% chance of lengthening Tayler’s current
life expectancy by five times.
More importantly, there is a 30% chance of a full recovery
if she can get there as soon as possible.
“We’ve been told Tayler has an aggressive and incurable
cancer. There is nothing more New Zealand doctors can do
for her,” says Mrs Gailey.
“We now have to look down the non-invasive path and this
could be a lifesaving paediatric cancer treatment.”
Mrs Gailey says while she has days were she feels down,
she doesn’t sit around crying.
“I’m absolutely gutted. We are devastated and often think
‘why us?’
“But that won’t make Tayler better and doesn’t make our
time spent with her any fun.”
Regardless of what happens she’s got to have taught us
something, says Mrs Gailey.
I’ve done a lot of soul searching this year and need to
believe in the power of positive thinking.
“Thank you to everyone who has donated . . . every little
bit makes a difference.”
How you can help
Family friends have also launched an appeal for Tayler
Gailey on social networking site Facebook.
Tayler’s page already has 624 followers and tracks fundraising
events and efforts which currently sit at $28,916.
“It’s humbling how many people are willing to help,” says
Mrs Gailey.
“People are auctioning items on Trade Me, holding garage
sales – it’s just amazing.
“Both our local community and complete strangers are
being so generous.”
“We have also had numerous phone calls and messages of
support with many people saying Tayler is in their hopes
and prayers and wishing us luck.”
Te Kuiti Westpac manager Jenny Toso is co-ordinating the
North King Country’s fundraising efforts for Tayler. Donations
can be deposited at any Westpac branch – the account
is: HOPE 4 TAYLER - 03 0449 0205137 00
To find out more about Tayler, visit her Facebook page by
searching Tayler Gailey.
Simple maths
The Waitomo News will regularly publish updates on the
fundraising effort for her.
But simple maths tells us that if everyone pledged $1 in
the North King Country . . . the family would pretty much
be on its way to Mexico.
Just a few loaves short
YOU know things
are in dire straits
when there is no bread
for breakfast.
That was the situation
in Te Kuiti on
Friday when bread
stocks in the town had
all but run out the day
before.
The shortages arose
from disruption to
production of key suppliers
caused by the
North Taranaki gas
leak.
Te Kuiti Supervalue
was completely
“cleaned out” of all its
bread stocks on Thursday.
Produce manager
Aman Toor says some
customers were angry
about going away empty-handed,
but understood
the situation.
The supermarket’s
bread deliveries normally
come from Hamilton,
but on Friday
they came hundreds
of kilometres further
from Wellington and
it was only half Supervalue’s
normal stock
levels.
At Rennie’s Dairy
employee Toni Thorn
says there was no
bread delivery until
just before lunchtime
on Friday when normally
delivery would
be early in the morning.
“As soon as customers
saw the bread they
bought it.”
She also noticed a lot more
people were buying sandwiches
“because obviously there was
no bread at home.”
New World okay
The town’s largest supermarket
Te Kuiti New World had
few difficulties coping with the
shortage.
Operations manager Edwin
Searancke says on Thursday
they were “a bit short but did
have cover with their bakery”
and on Friday received 90% of
their usual bread supply.
Bread appeared to be the
only food item affected in Te
Kuiti, which Mr Searancke
NEW STOCK
CHRISTMAS!
puts down to the relatively low
customer volumes of the town’s
stores compared to larger city
Countdown baked own
Otorohanga Countdown office
manager Louise Mathews
says neither Tip Top nor Quality
Bakers were able to supply
bread because of the gas
shortage however, customers
were still able to buy as much
as they needed.
“We baked a lot of bread in
our own bakery so there was
plenty of choice for our customers,
even though they couldn’t
have their usual brands.
“The Countdown bakery was
R Fenton & Son
Rora St, Te Kuiti
very busy and customers were
happy to have bread fresh out
of the ovens.”
Crisis over
Repairs to the Taranaki gas
leak were completed on Friday
and by yesterday normal gas
supplies were restored to all
customers.
CAUGHT SHORT: Te Kuiti
Supervalue’s Aman Toor (above)
says the store was completely
supplies on Friday after bread was
delivered from Wellington.
Te Kuiti District Court, October 27 – Community Magistrate Sue Hovell
Rustlers
TWO Te Kuiti men denied charges of stock rustling
when they came before the court last week.
Kenneth Taama Winikerei (30) and Buddy
Kawhena (27) were remanded on bail to reappear for
a status hearing on December 5. They face charges of
animal theft and animal cruelty.
The court heard that on October 6, a passerby alerted
a farmer after seeing three suspicious hunters (one
Piopio movie set firmly under wraps
FROM P1
On Monday, the Waikato Times
reported seeing former Shortland
Street actor Dean O’Gorman and comedian
Mark Hadlow at Hamilton
International Airport on Sunday
making their way to Te Kuiti.
Piopio’s Fat Pigeon Cafe co-owner
Melanie Simpson says about 90 cast
and crew members are staying in
the town.
“We’ve been asked to open at 7am
and stay open until 9pm for the
whole week.
“Although it’s been really busy I
haven’t recognised any Hollywood
stars yet but we would love to meet
them.
“First there was the Rugby World
Cup hype – now this. The whole
town is absolutely buzzing.”
Despite the influx of cast and
crew, Elliotts Garage owner Robin
Elliott says his business hasn’t
increased mainly because the film
set has its own petrol trucks.
“Having a movie filmed here is
great for the town,” he says.
“We see ourselves as the hosts,
and hopefully, we’ll reap the benefits
for years to come.”
Piopio Pony Club members made
way for the visitors, cancelling a
rally at Piopio Domain on Saturday,
as the film’s trainers prepared
horses for scenes in the movie on
the site.
It is also believed a red helicopter
is transporting Academy Award
winning director Sir Peter Jackson
to and from the set.
Following Piopio’s moment in the
spotlight, filming will continue in
various locations around the country
until mid-December.
Set to hit the screens next year
The Hobbit follows Bilbo Baggins
(who features in The Lord of the
Rings trilogy) as he journeys to
Lonely Mountain accompanied by
a group of dwarves to reclaim a
treasure taken from them by the
dragon Smaug.
Other TOLR cast members returning
for The Hobbit include Cate
Blanchett as ‘Galadriel’ and Elijah
Wood as ‘Frodo’.
Last week, Sir Peter confirmed
that The Hobbit: An Unexpected
Journey will premier in Wellington
before its general release on December
14 next year. Part two . . . The
Hobbit: There and Back Again . . .
is scheduled for release in 2013.
AS CLOSE UP AS WE CAN GET: Scenes for Sir Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit movie began filming in Piopio on Monday, but the
whole production is shrouded in secrecy under huge marquees along Mangaotaki Rd.

Seeds planted at an early age
THE seeds of Tahuna Clark’s passion for weaving
were planted in her home town of Kawhia at
the feet of her great-great-grandmother.
She grew up watching her kuia weaving harakeke
(flax) but didn’t start on her own ‘journey’
until 2001.
Mrs Clark, who works as a teacher in Hamilton,
was invited by a cousin to attend a wananga
for weavers at Kawhia.
“I had always wanted to make a kete and
thought if I could learn to do that I would be
happy.”
“But my passion has grown and, now I’ve
learned to use the different flax fibres such as
harakeke, kiekie and pingao, I love to try new
patterns.
“Though I’ve got a long way to go on my journey,
I find weaving therapeutic – I’m putting energy
into my work and getting energy back.”
She enjoys teaching kete (basket) and korowai
(cloak) weaving in Hamilton, and has an expo
displaying her work in Hamilton this month.
Her days are full – she teaches, takes weaving
workshops, belongs to a busy Port Waikato
marae and is a Maori Women’s Welfare League
member.
She has a Bachelor of Education, a post-graduate
diploma in interpreting and translating
and graduated with her Masters last year, also
So when you go to vote, along with
your orange ballot paper for the
General Election, you’ll get a purple
On the Referendum paper, there are
is whether you think New Zealand
should keep MMP, or change to
another voting system.
The second question asks which of
four other voting systems you would
choose if New Zealand decides to
change from MMP. You’ll find out more
about them at www.elections.org.nz
If we vote to keep MMP, there
will be an independent review
to assess if there should be any
necessary systems in place to allow relevant and timely
reporting of your financial results.
In our experience, the most successful businesses are
those that have great accounting systems in place. They
utilise the data and reports from these systems, measure
the results against industry benchmarks and predetermined
key performance indicators (KPI’s).
Key performance indicators are the results of certain
areas of your business that really matter and drive the
success and profitability of your business.
Here at Lionel Smith & Associates we can provide
assistance with implementing KPI’s specific to your business
and give you some industry benchmarks to work towards.
Make your business the best it can be!
16 Waitomo News – Tuesday, November 1, 2011
Weaving their magic
MARRY the woman in the harakeke
(flax bushes) as she is the
most prized bride.
This loose translation of the
Maori whakatauki (proverb) extols
the value of the weaver whose
skilled fingers craft baskets, clothing,
bedding and mats.
Based on that traditional saying,
there were a great many ‘prized
brides’ at Kawhia’s Maketu Marae
during Labour Weekend.
Some 250 weavers from Christchurch
to Ahipara in the Far North
spent three days sharing their
knowledge and developments in
Maori weaving techniques at Te
Roopu Raranga Whatu o Aotearoa
national hui.
Chairwoman of the national collective
is Edna Pahewa of Tokoroa.
Mrs Pahewa is also head weaver
at Te Puia – the New Zealand Institute
for Maori Arts and Crafts
in Rotorua.
The mantle was handed down
by her mother renowned master
weaver Emily Schuster.
Mrs Schuster founded Te Puia’s
weaving school and, as chairwoman
of the first national committee
helped create the 1984 hui to revive
the traditional art of Maori
weaving.
“The kuia (elders) at the time felt
the art of weaving was being lost,”
says Mrs Pahewa.
“When you look at how many we
have at the hui today, the revival
was a success.
“We’ve got a lot of younger ones
taking up the flax and also a new
generation of skilled, well educated
teachers.
“A key element in the resurgence
and strength of weaving has been
the number of teachers of weaving
in NZ tertiary institutions.
“Many of the courses now include
the national weavers hui as part of
the course requirements.”
Weaving has been a major part of
Mrs Pahewa’s life for many years.
Her kuia Ngatai Bubb, mother
Emily and twin sister Dawn were
among her teachers and mentors.
Vital to keep
skills alive
She says the Labour Weekend
hui is vital because it keeps the old
skills alive through everyone sharing
their art, networking, workshops
and looking after the taonga
(treasures) and craft.
“The most important thing is
keeping the tikanga (the customary
way) alive as well.
“Interest among young people in
weaving is strong, but it’s knowing
the value of what you are doing
that’s so important.
“It’s vital today, following the raping of our
coastal (flax) resources through land development
or sea erosion.
“And, that’s part of our obligation to our
weavers – to look forward and keep their mana
strong.”
Mrs Pahewa says Maori weaving is at an excellent
level – not just with the wearable arts,
but with the more basic kete and mats.
“The knowledge is strong and we stand in good
stead for the next 50 years.
“I look forward to the continued success and
development of our work as Maori weavers, and
our kaupapa to nurture, preserve and develop
the techniques and tikanga of raranga, whatu
and taniko in traditional and modern contexts
for Maori weavers.
“I believe our elders who formed this group 37
years ago will be looking at us here at Kawhia
today and saying – ka pai!”
WEAVERS AT WORK: Hundreds of weavers gathered
at Kawhia’s Maketu Marae to share their knowledge
at the Maori Weavers’ National Hui during Labour
Weekend including Mark Sykes (right) and Bethany
Edmonds (below left).
