Cycletime King Country Challenge
Saturday 17 March
If you thought the good qualities of
the old rural New Zealand lifestyle
had gone forever, the Cycletime King
Country Challenge would have
changed your mind.
All the ingredients were there - a rural
community pulling together and cooperating
to achieve a common goal,
glorious outdoor fun and physical
challenge in an idyllic setting, families
everywhere enjoying themselves,
loads of good quality spot prizes,
windswept hills, leafy forests, cool
rushing rivers, a laid-back cruisy
atmosphere, plenty of active fun for
the kids, and perhaps most important
of all - plenty of good home-cooked
satisfying food at the end of the day .
Over 140 riders accepted the
Challenge, choosing one of the five
courses to choose from. Two courses
- the 37km and 50 km were better
suited to those who are more
experienced, while the 20km
provided a challenging but
introductory look at the type of
terrain that the longer riders had to
endure. Two children's courses, 10km
and 13km, enabled the 8-15 year olds
to test their stamina and skills, while
the under 8s had a fun bike
programme all to themselves.
Winners of each of the five races
received medals, while all the
children and most of the adults
received spot prizes provided by our
generous sponsors:
Male 50km: Darryl Stevens 2:41:00
Female 50km: Julia McCracken
Project Piopio
Trust Report
April 2012
PAGE 2
Well 2012 has had a very
positive start. Our 2 key
projects for the year are
the Kara Park Toilet
Upgrade and a Wall/
Walk of Fame. Points of
note so far are:
It has been fantastic to
see yet another business open
in Piopio! I think you will agree that
there would be no building more suitable than the old
‘Tin Shed’ for a quaint little “Sweet Tweets” shop. A
very attractive (and tasty!) asset to our Main Street –
great work Amanda and Daniel Benefield!
A couple of PPT members and I called in to see
Stephanie Brough last week and were very impressed
to see the progress she has made in renovating the old
Piopio Doctors Surgery to make a very smart and
functional Childcare centre. This new business will be a
tremendous asset to Piopio. It is easy to see there has
been a lot of great teamwork going on there and
Stephanie looked very excited that opening day is not
too far away.
We welcomed 2 new members to the Project Piopio
Trust this year- Barrie Tatham and Lynne Merchant,
who both have skills we hope to utilise with our
projects during the year!
We have also been very pleased to add Trudy Denize
and her creative/design skills to our team. Trudy began
with designing the silver fern for the Rugby World cup
make-over of the Kara Park Toilets. Since then she has
joined us at meetings with the Community Services
team from the Waitomo District Council and has
submitted concept plans for the Toilet upgrade. We will
keep you informed regarding the developments there.
The Waitomo District Council notified us in February
about their new annual Citizen of the Year and Life
Time Achievement Awards. We were keen to ensure
Piopio was well represented with nominations of some
of the well deserving locals from our community. There
are many ‘unsung heroes’ out there that contribute in
many ways to ensure this community continues to
thrive. Thanks to the willing support from several locals
(you know who you are!) that we contacted to help us,
there were at least 10 members of our community
nominated. We have started a list for next year as well,
so if you know of someone who you think should be
nominated for next years awards and you need help to
make it happen -please let us know.
The main Rukuhia Domain toilets (beside the Rugby
Club) have now been completely painted inside and
out. This initiative was started by a group of
hardworking Year 8 students from Piopio College, a
couple of whom were motivated by the fact that they
were members of the Pony Club and were embarrassed
at the state of the toilets during horse events held at
Piopio! Our thanks to Stormy Harris, Tyler Demchy,
friends and families.
It has also been exciting to see Doug Oliver and Tracey
Neal (Domain Board Chairperson and Secretary/
Treasurer) and the other Domain User groups get
together with the WDC to make plans for the Piopio
Domain. If there are any other areas around the town
that you feel need attention/upgrading/tidying upplease
let us know.
There has been a suggestion that Piopio should have an
area where passers by can stop and let their dogs out
for a walk/toilet/drink (and hopefully a sandwich and
drink for the owner!). This works well at Piopio Orchard
but this is not available year round. The idea is being
researched by Jenny Yates, but if you have any ‘tips’ or
know of anywhere else in the country that this idea
works well, please let her know (07 8778995).
Nicky Atkinson and PPT.
Piopio Hall Report
Piopio put on great weather for the Piopio Hall to Hall
relay yet again this year.
We had 16 teams and a few had even made the trip down
from Hamilton. Again this year the fire siren went off! So
we had to make some adjustments to our start time as
teams were caught in the traffic.
This year we had quite a different bunch of people with a
majority of runners. So the field was quite spread out.
* The winning team on the day was the Bailey Ingham
team, whom exceeded previous record times and in fact
the race was completed by all competitors by 3Pm.
* Best Dressed team on the day were the clowns from
Hamilton.
* The Early bird Entry went to the Yaba Daba Doo’s.
We have decided to make some adjustments next year to
make for a more cohesive event. We will include an entry
for single entrants, and also include a later start time for
more competitive teams who still want to enjoy the
camaraderie of travelling with other competing teams.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people
who entered the walk, I hope everyone enjoyed
themselves.
I would also like to thank the farmers en route for the use of
paddocks and driveways etc and the Mairoa and
Mangoataki Halls for their much appreciated involvement
and finally all of the helpers on the day, you know and we
know who you are!
We hope to have raised around $3000.00 from the day; this
will all be put towards our toilet upgrade. We are slowly
getting there.
Our Commercial dishwasher has been installed and is ready
for use. I believe 2 minutes for a complete cycle. This
should help with catering when using the hall.
Well it’s is time to think about the next Stars in Your
Eyes. Get your acts together
now!!!!!!!
Kevin Hooker from
Hamilton won the
raffle, & also won
the major spot
prize !
You know we will be ringing you
in the next month or so. Please
contact me if you have an act all
sorted. I hear whispers there
are some acts in the making out
there already.
Knitwear
designer and
author Mel Clark
will be in Piopio to launch her new
book, “Knitting Everyday Finery:
Practical Designs for Dressing Up in
Little Ways.”
Back home after 25 years overseas,
Mel is well known in the US through
her retail yarn business in California
and for her book “Knit 2 Together”, coauthored
with comedienne Tracey
Ullmann. Her designs have been
published in Vogue Knitting and
Interweave Knits in the US, amongst
other publications. She has designed
knitwear under her own label and
appeared on The Martha Stewart
Show.
The Fat Pigeon Café recently
welcomed qualified chef Wayne
Good, who has hosted two very
successful cooking demonstrations at
the café. About 25 people attended
each of the last two hostings which
were Mediterranean BBQ and Italian
Pasta.
Wayne will be holding a further
demonstration next month (April 3),
with a Middle Eastern theme. The
meal will include feta and walnut dip,
chicken targine with green olives and
preserved lemons, targine of beef
with prunes and sesame seeds,
fattoush salad, and oranges in
cardamom syrup.
Wayne is a qualified chef with a real
feel for food. His demonstrations are
an enormous amount of fun,
extremely informative and there is
always a story to tell. Wayne is a
professionally trained chef having
completed his London City and
Guilds qualifications in the early
1980s, has since trained at Whitecliffe
“New Zealanders are great knitters”,
says Mel. “The King Country is known
for its sheep farming and of course for
its shearers. I can’t think of a better
place to celebrate my new book.”
Karen Barrett and John Robertson will
host a book signing over morning tea
on Saturday, May 12 at Struan Farm
near Piopio.
“Mel has created a collection of
gorgeous accessory patterns that are
practical enough to be worn any time
but that definitely have the 'wow'
factor.”
“Mel will be at Struan Farm to meet
everyone and sign books. The original
designs will be on display and some
yarns available too. Come enjoy
morning tea with us,” says Karen.
doesn't have to be complicated when
using great ingredients, sometimes
from his own garden.
Fat Pigeon co-owners Melanie
Simpson and Jo Walker are hopeful
for another good attendance. “They
are great fun – Wayne makes it an
enjoyable evening and offers great
cooking tips.” says Mel. “We receive a
lot of positive comments from the
audience.”
Looking ahead, the pair hope to be
able to offer a wide range of cooking
demonstrations by
different hosts, to
Almost a week after the event, and I’m
still recovering from the effort of
running, and walking, from the Piopio
Memorial Hall, up to the first transition
point at Piopio Station, on the first leg
of the now annual Hall To Hall Relay.
An outstanding effort by the
organising committee ensured that the
sixteen teams entered, safely, if
painfully, negotiated the 46kms over 7
legs, with a mix of help and hindrance
from their (or other) support crews.
Also, the Hall Committees at Mairoa
and Waitanguru must be mentioned
for providing splendid recovery and
refreshment facilities. Overall, another
fine example of the great community
spirit we have in our area.
Another example of that community
spirit is the way residents, especially
rural, have adapted to the current
operating regime at the Piopio
Transfer Station. Very ably managed
by Lynn, the initial sorting of
recyclable waste by residents is crucial
to the smooth flow of waste through
the system, via Envirowaste, to its final
destination. Any disruption to that
flow costs us (Council-the service
provider), and all those extra costs are
met from rates, so a little extra effort
at home helps to moderate the overall
cost of the service.
Despite Lynn’s great effort in keeping
the Transfer Station site clean and tidy
(along with your cooperation), the
structures there are overdue for a
spruce up. Any ideas on colour
Local Dance Crew makes Regional Finals
The opportunity to learn dance was welcomed
by many youngsters last year when dance
teacher Leeza Vincent of Imperious Dance
Company, arrived into town.
The opportunity to learn a range of dance styles,
including jazz ballet and hip hop dance attracted a
number of youngsters including preschoolers, teenagers
and adults alike. The natural ability of a few was
recognised and an invitation extended to showcase their talents. Dancers from
Piopio and Aria were selected to dance at the Waikato/BOP Regional's Street
Dance competition held in Hamilton recently.
Talented junior Hip Hop dancer Jessie Blaze James was selected to perform with
dance crew Minimize, a group of 7-10 year old dancers. Whilst local teenage
dancers Henare Williams, Miles Manunui, Jasmin Kennard, and Sammie Akroyd
(absent due to injury), represented the youth section with the Imperious Dance
Crew. Energetic performances on the day resulted in finishing 2nd place in finals
for both dance crews. The
dedication these young
achievers have committed to
intensive trainings and dance
routines, choreographed by
coach Leeza is an outstanding
achievement by both groups
and has now secured entry to
compete at the NZ hip-hop
championships in Auckland
next month.
Veterinary Services in Piopio By Alan Royal
With the Waitanguru Centenary to be held shortly, it is
timely we revisit the history of some key people whom had
instigated progress and development in our community
many years ago. The following is a recall of events from
past resident Alan Royal
Veterinary Services in Piopio commenced with the arrival,
from Gisborne, of Edinburgh graduate Eric Shortridge in
1952. He practised from the office of local carpenter Frank
Foster. His facilities were the use of a hot point in the office
and a pie dish to sterilise instruments. The only instruments
were those he brought with him.
* The practise was started under the wing of the Te
Awamutu Veterinary Club. The local Chairman was Joe
Trust, then Chairman of the Piopio Dairy Cooperative.
* Three months after Eric’s arrival the clinic/office was
relocated to a building erected on the Dairy Cooperative
land by Frank Foster. The office was partitioned off to
separate the clinic at a later date.
* Eric married local girl Betty Tatham (sister of Barrie
Tatham)
* The next arrival was also a UK graduate - Harold Skyrme
who took charge in May 1955 when Eric was invited by
the Veterinary Services Council to establish the Raglan
Veterinary Club.
* Bob Dunlop joined Harold in January 1956 and remained
for a year.
* Don Cordes arrived in January 1957 and was replaced by
Project
Piopio
Cemetery
Following the footsteps of Stan Neal,
Gwenda Bryant is continuing the
project of recording the history of
those whom rest at the Piopio
Cemetery on Mangakowhai Road.
The collection of memories will
eventually be published and shared. If you
have a family member or friend you wish to include.
Contact Gwenda 8778373
Alan Royal in January
1960.Don married the
local postmaster’s
daughter.
* Harold joined MAF
Gisborne in 1962 and Donal
Frazer replaced Harold.
* Both Alan Royal and Donal Frazer left Piopio in late 1962
and were replaced by Brian Pyke.
* The concrete block building on the corner of the
Mangaotaki and the State Highway was built and
occupied in mid 1958. It was built on land provided by the
Boddies. The house the Atkinsons live in was old Mrs
Boddies home, until purchased for Donal Frazer’
occupancy. The building project was pushed by Don
Cordes and the finance to build was raised in large part
by Lloyd Wilson’s determined pressure on the local
community.
* The original Club owned house was the one on the main
road owned by the Dickinsons. It was occupied by the
Skyrme family and then the Royals.
* The initial local Club Executive was Joe Trust and Ernest
Larsen, and later Bob Neal.
* The Club ran a local radio telephone service out of Val
and Bill Killery’s Cloverleaf Dairy.
If you have any history or knowledge about local
buildings , we would welcome your thoughts to share .
Earthworks Bobcat
Services have seen some new
additions to our little business. In
September last year we travelled to
Lower Hutt to purchase a 5 tonne tip
truck. This has come in handy with
nearly every job we have had since
then. We are now able to cart to and
from the site, while independently
being able to transport the Bobcat and
attachments.
You may have seen the truck in the
Piopio Christmas Parade, supporting
Kuku Street for a 2 nd place for ‘Fun in
the Sun,’ or in and around town, as it is
currently being used for the new
Piopio sewerage system.
Last month we purchased a set of
tracks, which are ideal in extremely
muddy conditions, a 4 in 1 bucket and
a bulk bucket to go with the 600mm
and 400mm Augers that we already
had.
Earthworks Business extends its services
Aaron has been busy over the summer,
carting and stacking bales, levelling
drain cleanings, building up farm
crossings and now heading towards
the colder months, is fitting in jobs to
clean out calf sheds and covered-in
yards.
So give us a call and see what we can
help you out with.
We would like to thank the
farmers that got in touch
regarding picking up hay this
season. Conditions made it
tough to get it all done, with
still more jobs yet to be
finished, however we
appreciate the chance to
raise funds for our club and
Preschoolers Curious for new Day Care Centre
The opening for the
newly renovated day-care
centre welcomed its first
children this week.
Developed in the old Doctor’s
surgery on Kea Street, the
building has had an extreme
makeover and is now a fully functioning early childhood
centre.
Curious Keas business owner Stephanie Brough has
licence for 10 under 2 year old babies and 20 preschool
children. The need for this service has been long awaited
for many working families whom have previously travelled
to Te Kuiti.
The centre will be open 5 days a week from 8am - 5pm
including school holidays.
The Aria Toy Library is a fantastic resource for
families in our district and has helped educate
and entertain hundreds of children in our
community.
The toy library will now be open from 9am-3pm
Monday to Friday, located in the building
opposite RD1. A fresh new look will be taking
place with a new paint job and the premise will
now be shared with Hui Health and Healing
products. Nadia will also take on the role of
librarian enabling our member’s regular access.
Play is important to all children and toys are a major element in helping to
play and learn. A toy library welcomes children, their families and
caregivers to come and to borrow well designed toys, games, puzzles and
equipment, which are made available at minimal cost.
Toy Libraries operate along similar lines to public libraries. Members
borrow toys for a fixed time period. Toy libraries cater mainly for preschool
children and generally have a limit on the number of toys that can
be borrowed at each visit.
Quality toys are expensive and children quickly
become bored with a toy once its play value has
Piopio’s
Fat Pigeon
Café was the
starting point for 16 World Harmony
Runners entering the 3rd day of the
2012 World Harmony Run New
Zealand. This years Run began on 5th
March in Auckland and Runners
stopped for breakfast at the Fat
Pigeon Café on 7th March, on route
to New Plymouth.
The World Harmony Run is a global
relay that seeks to promote
international friendship and
understanding. As a symbol of
harmony, runners carry a flaming
torch, passing it from hand to hand,
travelling through over 100 nations
around the globe. The World
Harmony Run does not seek to raise
money or highlight any political
cause, but simply strives to create
goodwill among peoples of all
nations.
World Harmony Runners Stop For Breakfast
The runners were astounded as
they entered the café and were
presented with a typical Fat Pigeon
‘banquet’, all free of charge.
Melanie Simpson and her staff,
(with the help of donations of fruit
and other goodies from local
businesses such as Piopio Orchard
and Harry Nahna), had cooked up a
breakfast to be remembered!
The runners asked many questions
about the Fat Pigeon Café and the
Piopio community and were so
impressed with Melanie and her
passion for cooking and people that
they awarded her with the Torch
Bearer Award for “her continuous
and selfless work in the
community.” They noted “ One
person can really change the lives of
many and Melanie's open-hearted
kindness and hospitality over the
years has spread far and wide. “
The runners stopped for photos
outside the Café and headed down
the street to the Primary school
where they joined the children for a
run around the field.
Several children led the World
Harmony team up to the
College where they joined
the school Assembly.
The group presented a video
of the WHR and answered a
lot of interesting questions.
A torch bearer award was
also dedicated to College P.E.
teacher, Mike Johnson, for his
service to St Johns and the
community.
This year the runners had to stay in
Te Kuiti because we couldn't find
accommodation here in Piopio. But we
are hoping next time they come this way
we will be able to organise
accommodation for them all in Piopiosomewhere
where they are close
together so they can meet at night.
Please let us know if you could help.
