2009 Release September 29, 2012
BORDEAUX

THE 2009
BORDEAUX RELEASE
Two summers ago, BC Liquor Stores placed reservations
for Bordeaux from the 2009 vintage, one of the greatest
years in the history of the region. These special wines
have been aging in Châteaux cellars for over two years and, on
September 29th, 2012, will be released in Signature Stores around
the province.
The near-perfect 2009 growing season in Bordeaux produced
wines that have created excitement and anticipation around the
world. Weather was warm and dry when it needed to be, creating
dark fruit aromas and sweet, chewy tannins in the reds. Whites
are luscious with ripe citrus and stone fruit aromas.
In the modern world of Bordeaux, the hallmark of a truly
great vintage is its consistency throughout appellations and
pricepoints. It is expected that the First Growth Châteaux will
make outstanding wines every year, but in years like 2009, even
the Petits Châteaux can achieve greatness. Look to the Médoc
and Graves to find wines with a backbone of Cabernet Sauvignon
which, in this vintage, shows depth of fruit character and
seductive tannins. Châteaux La Garde, Carbonnieux and Grand
Puy Ducasse not only offer great value drinking now, but will
hold and develop 5-10 years. For ripe red fruits, softer tannins and
lushness on the palate, explore the Merlot-based wines from the
Right Bank. Châteaux Fontenil, Fombrauge, Berliquet and Croix
du Gay are silky and delicious.
Little needs to be added about the top wines of the vintage,
several of which received 100 points from respected journalist
Robert Parker. Because of long standing ties with the Bordeaux
merchants, BC Liquor Stores was able to secure allocations of
Bordeaux 2009 1

are wines like Pétrus, Lafite Rothschild, Latour and Haut Brion.
There is incredibly high demand for these Châteaux so bottle
limits will apply on the day of the release.
Compared to recent vintages of white Bordeaux, the 2009s
are richer and plumper, with tropical aromas bringing an extra
dimension to the classic citrus and mineral notes. Sauternes
are particularly honeyed and complex. Arguably the most
knowledgeable expert on Sauternes in the world, Bill Blatch, uses
words like ‘fabulous’ and ‘stunning’ to describe the wines. While
some of the famous sweet wines are not yet ready for release, BC
Liquor Stores will have a select offering of Sauternes available,
including Château Rieussec that received 95-97 points from
Robert Parker.
From September 29th, 2012, a wide selection of Bordeaux 2009
will be available across the province. Participating stores include
the 21 Signature Stores, Dunbar, Caulfield, Peninsula Village
(Surrey) and Brighouse (Richmond). Our flagship location at
39th & Cambie will carry the complete range of 2009 Bordeaux,
with Park Royal, Fort Street (Victoria), Orchard Park (Kelowna)
and Bute & Alberni also displaying enhanced selections. Product
Consultants are available at all locations and will be pleased to
assist you with your purchasing decision.
VinS ROUgES
Château d’aiguilhe, Côtes de Castillon
“Tiny yields of 20 hectoliters per hectare have produced a wine
with terrific fruit intensity, a moderately tannic structure, and
hints of chocolate, cedar, spice box, and earth. Enjoy it over the
next 12 years.”
90-92 pts, Wine Advocate
150680 $58.00
Château angélus, St Émilion
“A candidate for one of the finest Angelus produced to date
(and there have been many, including 1989, 1990, 2000 and
2005), this blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc was
fashioned from tiny yields of 20 hectoliters per hectare. It boasts
a black/purple color along with a gorgeous perfume of blueberry
liqueur, spring flowers and graphite. In the mouth, notes of
incense and cassis also emerge from this velvety-textured, fullbodied,
intensely concentrated 2009. With silky tannins, low
acidity and spectacular purity, texture and depth, it is already
approachable.”
99 pts, Wine Advocate
119990 $688.00
Château d’angludet, Margaux
“Ripe, fleshy and forward, with mouthfilling plum sauce, fig,
raspberry confiture and blackberry pâte de fruit notes that are
all harnessed by substantial but silky-textured tannins. The
long, perfumy finish is open and inviting already. Drink now
through 2022.”
Prices shown are for 750 ml bottles unless otherwise specified. Prices are
Château d’armailhac, Pauillac
“The finest d’Armailhac I have tasted to date, the 2009 is largely
Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) blended with a big wallop of Merlot
(25%) and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Its dense
purple color is followed by a big, sweet kiss of asphalt, black
currants, mocha, barbecue smoke, cedar and spice. This medium
to full-bodied, well-made, impressively endowed Pauillac
should drink well for 20+ years.”
92 pts, Wine Advocate
148742 $78.00
Château l’arrosée, St Émilion
“Always one of the more delicate, Burgundian-styled St.-
Émilions, the 2009 exhibits seductive, beautiful raspberry and
black cherry fruit intermixed with hints of minerality as well as
spicy oak. Lavishly concentrated, full and fresh, ethereal in both
its texture and weight, and light on its feet, it can be drunk early
in life yet has the stuffing and balance to last 20-25+ years.”
91 pts, Wine Advocate
150250 $80.00
Château batailley, Pauillac
“The finest Batailley I have had in many years, the dense
purple-colored 2009 exhibits a boatload of tannin as well as
sweet, caramelized, black currant fruit intermixed with hints
of charcoal, cedarwood and smoke, a full-bodied mouthfeel
and the aforementioned high, but sweet, well-integrated tannin
displaying no jaggedness.”
94 pts, Wine Advocate
143024 $78.00
Bordeaux 2009

Château beau Séjour bécot, St Émilion
“My favorite Beau-Séjour-Bécot to date, this sumptuous, dense
blue/purple-hued 2009 reveals a blockbuster nose of blueberry
pie, black fruits, licorice, forest floor, spring flowers and a hint
of mocha. With an unctuous texture, full-bodied power and
tremendous levels of tannin (largely concealed behind a cascade
of rich fruit), this is a fabulous effort from a beautifully situated
St.-Émilion premier grand cru classé. It will need 5-8 years of
cellaring, and should keep for three decades.”
94+ pts, Wine Advocate
155432 $120.00
Château beauséjour Duffau, St Émilion
“This big wine is a blend of 77% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc
and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon. It boasts an opaque blue/purple
color along with a gorgeous bouquet of charcoal, incense,
truffles, blackberry jam, black currants, raspberries and flowers.
While enormous in the mouth, the limestone soils in which the
grapes are grown give the wine good freshness as well as laserlike
clarity and precision. Amazing to taste, this massive, superconcentrated
powerhouse comes across as ethereal and almost
feminine despite its extravagant fruit, density and richness.”
100 pts, Wine Advocate
150318 $399.00
Château bélair Monange, St Émilion
“This extraordinary terroir, now exploited by Edouard Moueix,
the son of Christian, seems to be coming to life in a dramatic
fashion. Never a hedonistic wine, but very intellectual, the
2009 suggests a liqueur of crushed rocks intermixed with black
currants and black cherries. Still somewhat closed, medium
to full-bodied, and impressive rather than seductive, this is a
structured wine that needs to be forgotten for at least a decade,
and then drunk over the following 30+ years.”
94+ pts, Wine Advocate
150730 $250.00
Bordeaux 2009 7

Château bellevue, St. Émilion
“Made under the guidance of Hubert du Bouard, this blend of
primarily Merlot and a tiny dollop of Cabernet Franc (around
9%) from the limestone soils on the hillsides of St.-Émilion
exhibits a dense purple color, lots of chalky minerality and
a big, sweet perfume of boysenberries, blackberries, licorice
and burning embers. It is full-bodied and opulent with an
abundance of fruit, glycerin, power and silkiness.”
93 pts, Wine Advocate
150698 $138.00
Château belle-Vue, Haut-Médoc
“In a somewhat tragic twist, this over-achieving cru bourgeois
in Haut-Médoc has turned in its finest wine to date, an unfined
cuvée made from 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and
20% Petit Verdot, created by the late proprietor Vincent Mulliez,
who died suddenly last year. Sadly, this was his best effort. Notes
of blackberries, black currants, licorice and a hint of toasty
oak jump from the glass of this medium to full-bodied, wellendowed,
impressively pure and textured wine. It should drink
nicely for up to a decade.”
91 pts, Wine Advocate
891390 $35.00
Château berliquet, St Émilion
“The wine displays oodles of strawberry jam intermixed with
kirsch, dusty, loamy soil notes, garrigue, spice box and vanillin.
It is full-bodied, opulent, very flamboyant and showy, with a
hint of chalky minerality to add complexity and precision. It
should drink well for up to 15 or more years.”
91 pts, Wine Advocate
Bordeaux 2009

Château la bernadotte, Haut-Médoc
“This blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon is
one of the best wines to yet come from this estate, owned by
the proprietors of Pichon Lalande in Pauillac. Juicy, succulent,
cedary black currant fruit intermixed with licorice, herbs and
spice box are very pure, authoritative and substantial. Dark ruby/
purple, medium to full-bodied and delicious, this wine should
be drunk over the next 10-15 years. A sleeper.”
89 pts, Wine Advocate
011767 | 163717 | 184648 $29.00
Château beychevelle, St Julien
“The finest Beychevelle since the 2003 and probably since
the 1982, Beychevelle’s 2009 is opaque purple in color, with
a beautiful, floral nose intermixed with black currant fruit,
licorice, cedar wood and Christmas fruitcake. Full-bodied yet
still elegant and pure, this wine has velvety tannins, a broad,
savory mouthfeel, and a very long finish. There is plenty of
tannin behind the extravagant fruit, glycerin and texture of this
wine, but it is largely concealed. This wine could actually turn
out to be even better than my relatively conservative tasting
note. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2042.”
93 pts, Wine Advocate
119214 $150.00
Château bon Pasteur, Pomerol
“A brilliant effort from well-known oenologists Dany and
Michel Rolland, the 2009 Bon Pasteur is dominated by Merlot,
with a touch of Cabernet Franc included in the blend. It reveals
textbook notes of mocha, tobacco leaf, blackberries, black
cherries, roasted coffee and wood smoke. Full-bodied and
luscious with a succulent, beautifully textured, multidimensional
mouthfeel, low acidity and sweet but noticeable tannin, it is
reminiscent of the 1982 Bon Pasteur”
Bordeaux 2009 9

Château bourgneuf, Pomerol
“This is all rounded, enticing flesh, with succulent boysenberry,
cherry preserves, blackberry and fig notes melded together and
supported by subtle spice and anise shadings through the finish.
Ready to go, but with the stuffing to linger for a while in the
cellar. Drink now through 2021.” –JM
91 pts, Wine Spectator
150789 $58.00
Château branaire Ducru, St. Julien
“Haut couture becomes a wine! This dense purple wine has
the tell-tale notes of flowers and pencil shavings, and its broad
aromatics are intense and totally captivating. Powerful, rich, and
full, but less tannic than the 2005 and more opulent, this is a
dazzling Branaire to drink between 2017-2035.”
96 pts, Wine Advocate
119354 $150.00
Château brane Cantenac, Margaux
“A spectacular effort from this estate rivaling their 2005, but
more flashy/flamboyant, this dark ruby/purple wine has a
strikingly intense nose of licorice, flowers, plums and dark
berries. Medium to full-bodied, very approachable and silky,
this suave, very sexy wine can be drunk early on as well as aged
for 20+ years.”
95 pts, Wine Advocate
150300 $158.00
Château branon, Pessac léognan
“This magnificent, dense plum/purple-colored Pessac-Lognan
reveals notes of scorched earth, burning embers, blackberries
and truffles. Composed of Merlot and Cabernet Franc from a
vineyard gorgeously situated between Malartic Lagraviere and
Haut-Bailly, it possesses full-bodied power, a stunningly intense,
voluptuous, layered mouthfeel and abundant levels of fruit,
glycerin and tannin.”
98 pts, Wine Advocate
810192 $200.00
Bordeaux 2009

Château Calon Ségur, St estèphe
“The 2009 has the highest percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon
(90%) ever included in a Calon-Ségur (the rest is Merlot and
Petit Verdot). Completely different from its St.-Estèphe brethren,
it is more backward and structured with a dense purple color,
lots of black cherry, black currant, loamy earth, forest floor
and spice notes, excruciatingly high levels of tannin, and a
wonderful inner core of sweetness and concentration.”
94+ pts, Wine Advocate
118778 $158.00
Château Cantemerle, Haut-Médoc
“Dense ruby/purple (nearly opaque), this wine offers up notes
of lead pencil shavings, spring flowers, raspberries and black
cherries. The wine is ethereal, medium-bodied, and by no
means a blockbuster, but long and intellectual.”
91+ pts, Wine Advocate
117515 $70.00
Château Cantenac, St Émilion
“This thick, smooth red delivers earth and cola flavors, with
notes of herb and tobacco. The tannins are a bit grippy, but the
finish opens into notes of rose and vanilla. Drink now through
2017. 3,900 cases made.”
88 pts, Wine Spectator
479915 $25.00
Château Cantenac brown, Margaux
“This is perfumy and very pure, with lovely lilac and blackberry
aromas followed by plum, cassis and black cherry fruit. The
supple finish is caressed with toast that leaves a lingering,
perfumy feel. Best from 2013 through 2023.”
Bordeaux 2009 11

Château Cap de Faugères, Côtes de Castillon
“The 2009 is possibly the best Cap de Faugères yet made, a
sleeper of the vintage, and a realistically priced one at that. A
blend of 85% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Cabernet
Sauvignon that hit 14% natural alcohol, the wine displays loads
of charcoal, blackberry, espresso roast and white chocolate. It is
full-bodied, unctuously textured, with very sweet tannin and
stunning purity, texture and length. “
91 pts, Wine Advocate
664045 $28.00
Château Carbonnieux, Pessac léognan
“A classic Pessac-Léognan, the 2009 Carbonnieux possesses
aromas of sweet black currants and cherries intermixed with
hints of roasted herbs, unsmoked cigar tobacco, charcoal and
licorice. Medium to full-bodied with more concentration than
many vintages, this surprisingly fleshy effort has more poundage
and glycerin than this normally light-styled Bordeaux has
offered in the past.”
91 pts, Wine Advocate
148007 $68.00
Château Carignan ‘Prima’, Côtes de bordeaux
“Black olive and berry aromas follow through to a full
body, with velvety tannins and a long finish. I like the fruit
concentration in this wine. 100 percent Merlot.”
89-92 pts, Wine Spectator
614990 $28.00
Château Carillon d’angélus, St Émilion
“Essentially the second wine of Angelus, but coming from a
separate parcel that no longer goes into the grand vin Angelus, this
blend of equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc hit 14% natural
alcohol. It is a soft, fruity, front end-loaded wine with plenty of
berry fruit, underbrush and herbs as well as a hint of coffee and
some loamy soil notes. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.”
Château Carruades de lafite, Pauillac
“A very strong effort, the 2009 Carruades de Lafite may be
the finest Carruades since the 2003. A blend of 50% Cabernet
Sauvignon, 42% Merlot and tiny amounts of Cabernet Franc
and Petit Verdot, it reveals lots of sweet cassis intermixed with
subtle smoke and forest floor, undeniable lusciousness and
full-bodied hedonism. The wood component is pushed to the
background, and the wine is extremely viscous, round and
delicious. Additional complexity should continue to emerge
over the next decade and this 2009 should keep for 20-30 years.”
93 pts, Wine Advocate
119180 | 148171 $588.00
Château Certan de May, Pomerol
“A bruising, black/purple-hued, full-bodied wine, the 2009
Certan de May displays notes of charcuterie, smoked game,
herbs, black truffles, roasted meats, cassis and black cherries.
This backward, robustly-styled Pomerol is loaded with tannin
as well as extract. Give this full, powerful 2009 a decade of
cellaring and drink it over the following 30+ years.”
cut. Drink now through 2015.”
Château Cheval blanc, St.Émilion
“A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, the 2009
Cheval Blanc tips the scales at just under 14% natural alcohol.
Its dense blue/purple color is accompanied by an extraordinary
nose of incense, raspberries, cassis, sweet forest floor and a subtle
hint of menthol. Opulent and full-bodied with low acidity but
no sense of heaviness, this dense, unctuously textured, supersmooth,
velvety, pure, profound Cheval Blanc is impossible to
resist despite its youthfulness.”
le Clarence de Haut brion, Pessac léognan
“This 7,000-case cuvée is a blend of 46% Merlot, 39% Cabernet
Sauvignon and the rest small quantities of Petit Verdot and
Cabernet Franc. Once again the burning ember/scorched earth
characteristic that often comes from Haut-Brion is found in the
second wine, along with more kirsch and cassis, fewer nuances
and less complexity than its bigger sibling. The wine is fullbodied
with the minerality offered by this terroir as well as
plenty of sweet tannins.”
Château Clerc Milon, Pauillac
“Juicy and nicely framed with a singed bay leaf note, which
allows the medium-weight core of crushed plum and mulled fig
to glide along nicely through the velvety finish. This fleshes out
considerably as it sits in the glass, showing more layers of dark
fruit and lingering minerality. This has some power in reserve,
but lovely balance as well.”
Château Clinet, Pomerol
“Clinet has been on a hot streak lately and the 2009 appears to
be the greatest wine ever made at the estate, surpassing even the
late Jean-Michel Arcaute’s monumental 1989. A blend of 85%
Merlot and tiny amounts of Cabernet Franc (12%) and Cabernet
Sauvignon (3%), this big Pomerol boasts an opaque, moonless
night inky/blue/purple color in addition to a gorgeous perfume
of blueberry pie, incense, truffles, black raspberries, licorice and
wood smoke. Viscous and multi-dimensional with silky, sweet
tannin, massive fruit concentration and full-bodied power, there
are nearly 4,000 cases of this thick, juicy, perfect Clinet.”
119461 $388.00
Château Clos Fourtet, St Émilion
“Inky blue/purple with notes of camphor, forest floor, blackberry,
cassis, sweet cherries, licorice, the wine has stunning aromatics,
unctuous texture and an almost inky concentration, but without
any hard edges. With considerable tannin and just enough
acidity to provide definition, this wine transcends even its
premier grand cru classé terroir. It is certainly the finest Clos
Fourtet ever produced.”
Château Clos des lunelles, Côtes de Castillon
“This is a gorgeous effort, made from a blend of 80% Merlot and
the rest Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Cropped at 22
hectoliters per hectare from their clay over limestone soils, the
wine displays oodles of new oak, crushed chalk, and blueberry
and blackberry fruit with hints of raspberries and pen ink. It is
full-bodied and layered, with a fleshy, even succulent mid-palate
and a long, long finish. This is terrific Castillon to drink over
the next 10-15+ years.”
Clos de Marquis, St Julien
“This blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and
the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot from Jean-Hubert
Delon is a beauty. Crème de cassis notes intermixed with some
vanillin, crushed rock and spring flowers jump from the glass.
Full-bodied and powerful (nearly 14% natural alcohol), this is a
generously endowed, rich wine that was first made in 1902. The
2009 should drink well for 20-25 years.”
cigar tobacco as well as a touch of white chocolate and some
subtle toasty oak. Round, opulent and unctuously textured,
with a full-bodied mouthfeel, fabulous purity, and no hard
“One of the greatest young wines I have ever tasted, the
monumental 2009 Cos d’Estournel has lived up to its pre-bottling
potential. A remarkable effort from winemaking guru Jean-
Guillaume Prats and owner Michel Reybier, this blend of 65%
Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot (33%) and a touch of
Cabernet Franc (2%) was cropped at 33 hectoliters per hectare.
open-knit 2009 is quite approachable. This fabled terroir
sandwiched between Pétrus and Lafleur (hence the name)
generally produces one of the more elegantly-styled Pomerols,
the result is a powerhouse wine with an inky blue/purple color
and the smell of pen ink, acacia flowers, blueberries, black
raspberries and cassis. The wine hit 15% natural alcohol, which
gives it lots of glycerin as well as a full-bodied intensity, while
the low yields of 27 hectoliters per hectare have provided a
striking level of concentration and length. This is very serious
compelling elegance, tremendous intensity and opulence
the alcohol was well past 14%, the Château claims it is only
13.5%, which is relatively modest in this vintage. Lots of kirsch,
licorice, incense, truffle, asphalt, blackberry and cassis notes
dominate the aromatics and flavors of this full-bodied, viscous,
“This blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and the
rest Cabernet Franc was showing brilliantly at the 2009 tasting I
did in It boasts an inky/purple color, monumental concentration
and lots of sweet, jammy black currant, black cherry and kirsch
fruit intermixed with crushed rock and mineral notes. As always,
proprietor Jean-Hubert Delon has built a massive wine with
exceptional precision, unbelievable purity and aging potential
of 40-50 years. I was surprised by the lusciousness of this cuvée
on several occasions, and how much more forward it is given
the fact that Las Cases can often be forebodingly backward and
in need of 10-15 years of cellaring (at age 30, the 1982 is still a
baby in terms of development!).”
I had ever tasted from barrel, and its greatness has been confirmed
in the bottle. A blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and
Merlot (47% of each) and the rest Cabernet Franc, it exhibits an
opaque purple color as well as a magnificent bouquet of truffles,
scorched earth, blackberry and blueberry liqueur, subtle smoke
Château Mouton rothschild, Pauillac
“The 2009 Mouton Rothschild has a striking label from Anish
Kapoor. Representing 50% of their production, the wine has
an inky purple color to the rim and not terribly high alcohol
for a 2009 (13.2%), but that is reflected by the high percentage
of Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a remarkable nose of lead pencil
shavings, violets, crème de cassis and subtle barrique smells.
It is stunningly opulent, fat, and super-concentrated, but the
luxurious fruit tends to conceal some rather formidable tannins
in the finish. This is an amazing wine that will be slightly
Château la tour Figeac, St. Émilion
“The finest wine yet made by this estate run by Stephane
Derenoncourt’s wife, Christine, this blend of 78% Merlot and
22% Cabernet Franc tips the scales at 14+% alcohol. It exhibits
copious aromas of blueberries, raspberries, asphalt, truffles,
charcoal and a hint of graphite. Full-bodied and powerful
with low acidity, excellent freshness and precision, and deep,
glycerin-imbued, high octane flavors, the vintage’s tell-tale
voluptuousness and opulence are nicely wedded to a sense of
freshness and delineation.”
Château tronquoy lalande, St estèphe
“The 2009 Tronquoy Lalande, a blend of 51% Merlot, 42%
Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Petit Verdot, is the finest wine
they have yet produced. It reveals an opulent bouquet of
mulberries, blueberries, raspberries and spring flowers, full
body, silky tannin, low acidity and a lush, pure mouthfeel. This
uncharacteristically round, generous, sumptuous wine should be
drinkable early on.”
Château troplong Mondot, St Émilion
“It boasts an inky/purple color along with a gorgeous bouquet
of mocha, chocolate, blackberry and cassis fruit, an unctuous
texture, a full-bodied, viscous mouthfeel and a skyscraperlike,
multilayered finish. This spectacular wine is nearly
overwhelming in its richness, thickness and intensity.”
Château trotanoy, Pomerol
“An absolutely prodigious wine, the dense purple 2009 Trotanoy
exudes extraordinary notes of minerals, forest floor, sweet
black currants and black cherry jam along with floral notes
and graphite. Very full-bodied, with silky tannins, fabulous
opulence and palate presence, this terrific wine should be at its
best in 7-10 years and last for 20 or more. Think of it as a more
concentrated, “bigger” version of the extraordinary 1998. For
the first time at Trotanoy, 500 cases of a second wine were
produced from 100% Merlot from a parcel that is often excluded
from the final blend.”
Vieux Château Certan, Pomerol
“The 2009’s nearly 14% natural alcohol, exquisite ripeness, and
incredible complex bouquet of Asian spices, fruitcake, licorice,
smoke, blackberries and black currants are to die for. A blend
of 84% Merlot and the rest equal parts Cabernet Franc and
Cabernet Sauvignon, it possesses a viscous texture as well as
a freshness and vibrancy that are remarkable given the wine’s
weight, richness and potential massiveness. This extraordinary
effort is one of the finest Vieux Château Certans made over the
last sixty years.”
la grande Clotte blanc, bordeaux
“Consistently well-made by Dany and Michel Rolland, this
blend of Sauvignon with some Semillon and Muscadelle has
nose of honeysuckle, orange rinds and apricots. Exotic, with a
hint of underlying minerality, this delicious, pure, exuberant
Château Smith Haut lafitte blanc,
Pessac léognan
“Possibly the best dry white the estate has produced since the
proprietors, the Cathiards, acquired the property in 1990, this
wine exhibits a sensational fragrance of buttered citrus, honeyed
melons and a touch of grapefruit, lemon zest and orange rind. It
also displays grapefruit on the attack and mid-palate as well as
real opulence, terrific acidity and length. Drink it over the next
Chateau Climens, barsac
“The aromatics display pure honey, minerals, occasionally a faint
scent of spearmint and white peach, most with spellbinding
precision. On the palate, Berenice Lurton has some stupendous
lots at her disposal, with ample botrytis, ethereal definition,
one or two more powerful, quite spicy lots and others that are
shorter and will undoubtedly lend the blend an acidic cut. It
will be a joy to taste this after bottling.”
Chateau Doisy Daëne, barsac
“The Doisy Daene 2009 is quite delicious now giving intense
aromas of lemon marmalade, preserved kumquat, mandarin peel
and honeycomb. The palate is big, rich and sweet with a seductive
silkiness and around 150 g/l of residual sugar / 14% alcohol.”
“Richly layered and detailed, but thoroughly mouthwatering,
this lets lacy citrus, floral and white peach flavors meld into a
Chateau guiraud, Sauternes
“The 2009 Guiraud is very tight on the nose, taking time to
unfurl, with notes of apricot, peach, a touch of honeysuckle and
quince. Good definition. The palate is impressive: tightly coiled,
honeyed fruit, very fine acidity, linear at first then fanning out
across the finish with notes of dried apricot, nectarine, a touch
of almond and a faint hint of spice. With good length and
unctuous on the finish, this Guiraud is impossible to ignore.”
Chateau rayne Vigneau, Sauternes
“The 2009 Rayne-Vigneau is one of the stars of the vintage. It
has a very well defined, almost understated nose with white
peach, apricot and lime leaf: very pretty and succinct. The palate
is very well balanced, beautifully defined with real minerality
showing through the viscous, botrytized fruit. Great tension
here, effortlessly counterbalancing the richness to perfection.”
Chateau rieussec, Sauternes
“The minerality and stoniness really comes through on the nose
of this Rieussec, more than the 2007. The palate is very well
balanced with superb acidity, real tension, steely with great
precision with notes of apricot, white peach and honey on the
beautifully defined finish. Probably the best Rieussec since the
astounding 2001.”
“One of the outstanding successes of the 2009 vintage, this may
surpass the superlative 2007. It has a more understated nose
at the moment, but is very well defined with honey, white
peach, orange peel and crushed stones. The palate has a viscous
entry, is very well balanced, very powerful with great depth
and effervescent minerality. Layers of botrytis layer across
the mellifluous finish that is beautifully defined and sensuous.
