THE 2009
BORDEAUX RELEASE
Two summers ago, BC Liquor Stores placed reservations
for Bordeaux from the 2009 vintage, one of the greatest
years in the history of the region. These special wines
have been aging in Châteaux cellars for over two years and, on
September 29th, 2012, will be released in Signature Stores around
the province.
The near-perfect 2009 growing season in Bordeaux produced
wines that have created excitement and anticipation around the
world. Weather was warm and dry when it needed to be, creating
dark fruit aromas and sweet, chewy tannins in the reds. Whites
are luscious with ripe citrus and stone fruit aromas.
In the modern world of Bordeaux, the hallmark of a truly
great vintage is its consistency throughout appellations and
pricepoints. It is expected that the First Growth Châteaux will
make outstanding wines every year, but in years like 2009, even
the Petits Châteaux can achieve greatness. Look to the Médoc
and Graves to find wines with a backbone of Cabernet Sauvignon
which, in this vintage, shows depth of fruit character and
seductive tannins. Châteaux La Garde, Carbonnieux and Grand
Puy Ducasse not only offer great value drinking now, but will
hold and develop 5-10 years. For ripe red fruits, softer tannins and
lushness on the palate, explore the Merlot-based wines from the
Right Bank. Châteaux Fontenil, Fombrauge, Berliquet and Croix
du Gay are silky and delicious.
Little needs to be added about the top wines of the vintage,
several of which received 100 points from respected journalist
Robert Parker. Because of long standing ties with the Bordeaux
