considerably, from extremely small to fairly large, although
the srall predominates. A tendency to smooth over the vessel
before firing results in some obscuring of the oheok-stamping
to the extent that close scrutiny is sometimes required to make
sure that one is dealing with a check-stamped sherd, Paste,
temper, and general morphology correspond to that of other types,
including the plain pottery. Three restored, or partially
restored, vessels exhibit the markedly conoidal base with a weakly
impressed and partially obliterated check stamp covering the whole
body to the slightly flared rim and its narrow fold (Plate go. 4).
One restored check-stamped vessel is a mediumsized, globular pot,
with a small folded rim,clearly impressed but over-stamped on
parts of the surface. This vessel rim carries four small ears
on a flat rim. The rim is narrowly set off from the check-stamped
shoulder by an accenting incised line (Plate Ro.‘~). host of the
check-stamped pottery is identifiable with the type described by
Gordon R. Villey as gakulla Stamped, although a recent review of
the check-stamped collections from the Flint-Chattahooohee
drainage has led to the designation of Veeden Island Check Stamped.
The writer found, in the course of initial survey reconnaissanoe
in this region, site indications of a “puree check-stamped
horizon, i.e., minus Beeden Island types or Complicated Stamped,
Hales’ handing and Montgomery Field were the largest, although
smaller sites were found in the lower Flint. Other sites on the
