In tha sitcs reviewed along the lower Flint river, from
Bainbridgo, Georgia in Decatur County to Itha junction with the
Cbattahoochee in Seminole County, including sites on the Spring
Creek tributary whioh is the approximate divl9ing~ounty~lime,
the site profiles dovetail fairly homogeneously te suggest a
middle to late Weedon Island settlement or occupation. All
eitos tend to be dominated by tho liakulla Check Stamp, with the
plain-smooth ware attributed to Veeden Island Plain constituting
the strongest companion ware. The interesting feature of the
lower Flint assemblages is the declining, almost nogligible
showing of the Meeden Island Incised aad Tunctated series. Tha
strongest oocurrence, 9$, was in tho basal deposits'ot Nhito
Springs, BDr7. It was noted that there was a definite tendency
for tho Swift Creek shsrds to come out in the mound fill at
Lake Douglas burial mound, rather than ia the cache. Host of
tho restorable or nearly-restorable vessels from the cache’ there
were either Ifakulla Check Stamped narrow mouthed jars or large,
broad-brimmod smooth to burnished plain bowls (yeeden Island Elain).
The low* Flint-thus appears to,be a fringing area to the
northwest Florida area in lieeden Island times, in the middle to
late psriod, with the yeeden Island puactatc-incised types
dropping out in the terminal sites more sharply than in Florida.
