BIZARRE BIZARRE ORIGINS ORIGINS OF
OF
TODAY’ TODAY’S TODAY’ S SAYINGS
The Saying: RED TAPE
This phrase comes from the days when official
documents were bound with red tape.
The Saying: RING TRUE
In the past coins were actually made of gold,
silver or other metals. Their value depended on
the amount of gold or silver they contained. Some
people would make counterfeit coins by mixing
gold or silver with a cheaper metal. However you
could check if a coin was genuine by dropping it.
If it was made of the proper metal it would 'ring
true'.
The Saying: RUB SALT INTO A WOUND
This is derived from the days when salt was
rubbed into wounds as an antiseptic.
The Saying: RULE OF THUMB
This comes from the days when brewers
estimated the temperature of a brew by dipping
their thumb in it.
GIRLS NIGHT OUT NEWS
GNO (girls night out) is all geared up for another year of fun and girl growth and celebration! We continue to grow and expand our
ideas and are looking forward to many exciting projects in 2011/2012.
A big congratulation to Angela Unrau, who was one of 20 girls from across Canada to be chosen for the ELLE PROJECT, a leadership
training program exclusively for girls hosted by the Girls Action Foundation. She will be travelling, all expenses paid, to Montreal in
October to participate in this exciting program. She will be representing the Yukon, our community of Faro, and our group Girls Night
Out! (which is a member of the girls action foundation) We are so proud and excited for her!!
One of the things we will be doing this fall is creating our own society. We are expanding the acronym GNO to GNORTH, and will be
working to create GNORTH groups in all Yukon communities. As part of this project, we will be trying to secure funding to open our
own headquarters right here in Faro! We are already working with partners in Carmacks, Haines Junction, Watson Lake and
Whitehorse.
Each of the girls are planning their own meeting, we are ordering new jackets and pants, and we are planning a few fundraisers such
as a lasagna dinner and something special for Christmas.
Last year, GNO had a retreat in Whitehorse where we participated in tons of workshops such as Yoga, Henna Tattoos, Pilates,
Journalling and Nutrition. We are planning on having another retreat this winter. This time the theme will be "Preventing Violence"
and we will be hosting several speakers and having some workshops around this topic.
If you would like to get involved in GNORTH by hosting one of our meetings or by helping out at fundraisers or other activities,
please contact one of GNORTHS leaders, Heather Grantham at 994-2006 or Kirsten Ryan at 994-3441.
WE NEED YOUR VOTES!!
Girls Night Out has submitted a project to the Aviva Community Fund called
GIRLS NORTH: CREATING SPACES FOR GIRLS EMPOWERMENT.
How it works:
Aviva is a Canadian insurance company that has an annual competition for 1
million dollars in funding for community projects. To compete for the
money, you submit an idea and then get everybody you know to vote for
you. There are 3 phases of voting to get into the semi finals, then a judging
phase. We need enough votes to get through each phase.
How you vote:
You register through Aviva's website at www.avivacommunityfund.org or
through Aviva's facebook page. You get 15 votes for every phase, and we
need all 15 of your votes for each phase!!!
Please check out our project at
http://www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf11046 and VOTE VOTE
VOTE!!! Send the link to all your contacts, let all your friends know about our
project! We are competing against many projects across Canada and need
all the votes we can get!
More Girls News
I am excited for GNO to be part
of a new project through the
Girls Action Foundation called,
"Young Women's Leadership in
Rural Development". I will be
travelling to Montreal from
October 27-30 to be part of this
working group of girls leaders
from across Canada.
Young women in rural
communities often face issues
such as violence, drug and
alcohol abuse, racism, limited
services and resources, and a
lack of opportunities. Yet young
people are the future of rural
areas. The goal of this project is
to support the leadership
development of young women.
The project will improve the
skills of young women to make
their communities more livable
and sustainable, and equip
communities to increase
opportunities for rural young
women’s advancement.
GNO will be able to access some
special funding as a part of this
group, and we will be able to
collaborate and partner with
other rural organizations working
with young women regionally
and nationally.
Yey for Girls Night Out!!!
Happy October Faro!!
A few reminders from the Mounties as we head into the fall:
It’s time for snow tires! Traditionally the first snow storm of the year is the busiest time for fender
benders and car accidents. Let’s try to get by this year without any regrets about not getting the
snow tires on in time for that first surprise snow storm.
With the cold weather sometimes we make poor decisions about driving when maybe we
shouldn’t. If you’re planning to be out and have a few drinks be sure to make arrangements for a
drive or enjoy a brisk walk in the Yukon weather. The Yukon government has identified
enforcement of impaired operation laws as a priority in our Territory. It would be a great winter
for all of us if the Faro RCMP could report impaired driving is not a problem in Faro. Most
importantly, our roads and trails will be safer for all of us to enjoy.
Prepare for the cold weather by equipping your vehicle prior to making the trip to Whitehorse.
Dress for the cold and be prepared for anything. After packing warm clothes, a sleeping bag and
survival items the most important thing you can do is to plan to call someone when you arrive at
your destination. Remember there is no cell phone service out there. If you don’t have a satellite
phone a check in plan could save you a long wait for help on the highway.
It is that time of the year, where police forces all across Canada participate in Operation Impact.
For those who do not know, it is a national campaign to make Canada's roads the safest in the
world. This special weekend is a police initiative designed to remind people that an essential part
of the enforcement job is to save lives and reduce injuries on our roadways. Starts October 7th
00:01 hrs till October 10th 23:59 hrs
This year, Faro RCMP will targeting the following infractions;
- Alcohol Impaired Driving !!- Driving with Handheld Devices- Aggressive Driving (speeding)- Other
Moving Violations (ie: too fast for road conditions, fail to obey traffic control device)- Seatbelt
infractions
CST Tim LYNCH and his family would like to thank the people of Faro for such a warm welcome to the
community. CST LYNCH was posted to Faro at the end of June. CST LYNCH, his wife Michelle, and two
children have enjoyed the many great activities and friendly atmosphere in Faro and are looking forward to
the upcoming winter.
******************************************************************************
To contact Faro RCMP in an emergency, call 994-5555 or 1-867-667-5555. These calls will be answered by
Whitehorse OCC who will have officers respond to the call. For general inquiries in the community, call
994-2677. If there is no answer, please phone 994-5555 and an officer will be contacted.
******************************************************************************
Faro Detachment would like to remind members of the community about our Emergency Phone located at
the front entrance to the Detachment. This phone line is connected directly to Whitehorse RCMP dispatch.
The caller only has to hold the phone to their ear and someone from Whitehorse Dispatch will answer. This
will ensure a quicker response from Faro RCMP members.

LETTERS to the editor
I would like to thank the constituents of Pelly-Nisutlin for providing me with the privilege of serving as their representative in the
Legislative Assembly for the past five years.
This has been a position that I have found extremely rewarding and fulfilling. Improving the lives of my constituents has been
personally rewarding and meaningful to me.
My goal was to help seniors stay in their home communities and to help our young people have meaningful careers. By rebuilding
our economy, I am pleased that we now have more jobs than we have residents. One of the highlights of my time in office was
participating in the opening of the new seniors housing complex in Faro. I am also very pleased to see that the economic benefits
are also reaching Faro. I don’t wish to push the issue here…..but… “I told you so!”
While it may not be glamorous, I am proud of our work on the roads in Yukon. We closed the 36 km gap in the chip-seal on the
Campbell Highway that you asked for and have made rebuilding this entire highway a priority.
I am pleased that Ross River has moved to establish a local advisory council. As well, I believe that the community is safer because
of the new state-of-the-art fire truck that we were able to deliver last year. To this, I am proud to have played a part in securing
for Ross River a new fire hall, water treatment system and a replacement for the arena that burnt down. We have provided
funding for the completion of the much needed “Hope Hall”.
Yukoners should be proud of and applaud the incredible staff the Justice and Women’s Directorate Department employs. Thanks to
their good work we are well advanced in all areas of justice and women’s issues on the national front. It has been a pleasure to
work with the staff of both departments.
Violence against women has been another passion of mine. We fret about the ever rising rate of crime, increasing costs of health
care, crowded jails, increasing drop-out rates in our schools, the prevalence of FASD and dissolution of families. The simple solution
is “Healthy Mothers”. It does take a community to raise a child and it is indeed our business to get involved in ending violence
against women. I applaud Faro’s community spirit, you go the extra mile to help the youth in the community to achieve their
highest potential and you support those you put in place as community leaders.
As the Minister of Justice, I am proud of Yukon’s correctional redevelopment project, including the development of a new philosophy
of Corrections, a new Corrections Act and a new Correctional Centre as well as the development and implementation of the Victims
of Crime Strategy. I called for the policing review and I hope that I will remain to see the policing review carried through to
completion. I personally thank Commander Clark for his perseverance in this area which has, at times, not been an easy task.
On the national front, I am proud to support Minister Rob Nicholson's desire to protect children from predators by raising the age of
consent from 14 to 16. I am deeply grateful for his support in assisting us in bringing FASD to the national table.
I look forward to new opportunities and to new challenges as I enter the next phase. Whatever the future holds, I intend to
continue working to improve the lives of Yukoners.
I am deeply grateful for the friendships I have made with my colleagues, for the knowledge they have transferred to me, especially
of note Dennis Fentie, Archie Lang, Elaine Taylor and Brad Cathers. I sincerely wish each of them continued success. I am also
grateful for the enduring friendships I have made in my riding, especially Faro, over the past five years. I still hope to make Faro my
home in the future. God Bless.
Friendship Feasts is a made in Faro program, it is not affiliated with
Social Services, the Faro Health Centre, or any government
program. If you are able to make a meal for a family once in a while,
please get yourself on the Friendship Feast list. You may get called
once in 6 months. To receive meals, you just need to nominate
yourself or someone who you know needs meals. Generally,
Friendship Feasts provides meals when there has been a death or
other hardship in the family, when someone is recovering from an
operation or sickness, or when a family brings home a new baby.
Getting involved in Friendship Feasts is a great way to get involved in
our community and to meet people in town in a meaningful way. If
you are not on the list, please call KARA WENT at 994-3114 to sign
yourself up! We are always looking for new folks who are able to
provide a meal.
If you would appreciate meals or you would like to nominate
someone for meals, please call KARA to set it up.
The 2011 Hunting season seems to going quite well in the Faro District and the weather
cooperated much better this year than last.
We would like to remind all hunters that the voluntary closure in Zone 4:45 is still into
effect and we are encouraging all hunters to hunt elsewhere.
We would like to remind all hunters that the deadline for Kill Reports and biological
submissions for all species is due 15 days after the end of the month in which the
animal was killed. Therefore, if you harvested an animal in September, it has to be
reported no later than October 15 th . Also, a Kill Report is required to be filled out by all
hunters. Although you may have reported your kill to a Conservation Officer in the field,
called in to the TIPS line or called the Conservation office, please drop into the
Conservation office to fill out and sign the proper Kill Report. In order to keep track of
the number of moose harvested in 4:42-4:46, we are asking hunters to report within
48hrs so that we can keep track of the harvest as the season progresses however a Kill
Report is required to be filled out afterwards.
We would like to remind all people of the importance of reporting violations they may
witness during the hunting season, or at any time of year for that matter. To report
violations, visit a Conservation Officer or call our office at 994-2862. If someone wishes
to remain anonymous, they may do so by phoning the Turn-In-Poachers toll free hotline
at 1-800-661-0525, available 24 hours a day.
As the weather is getting colder out there and fall is definitely upon us, we wish
everyone success in their outings and please stay safe!
Just want to add that I have resigned from my position at the Dept. of Environment, CO
Services and my last day will be Sept. 30 th . I have enjoyed my job immensely and will
Can I vote?
You can vote if on polling day you:
are 18 years or older
are a Canadian citizen, and
have lived in the Yukon for 12 months
How can I register to vote?
When the election is called, enumerators will be going to every residence
in your electoral district to get the names of people who are qualified to
vote.
If the enumerators cannot get your name and the names of qualified
voters who live with you, you can have your name added during revision or
you can go to a special revision. Special revision starts after revision ends.
You should telephone the Elections Office for the times and locations for
adding your name to the list of voters or click here when an election is on.
I do not want someone to know where I live. How can I vote if my
name has to be on a list?
You can apply to the returning officer to vote without your name and
address being on the list.
I work in the Yukon from April to October. Can I vote in an election?
You will have to decide where you live.
I keep an apartment in Whitehorse. I live most of the time at my cabin
which is in another electoral district. Where do I vote?
You will have to decide in which electoral district you want to vote. You
may have to get your name on the list yourself. Enumerators can only take
your name for their electoral district.
How many political parties are there?
There are six political parties registered with the chief electoral officer.
RE: Fuel Delivery
Schedule Change –
Faro & Ross River Yukon
Dear Valued Customer,
This winter we will be changing our winter
delivery schedule in the towns of Faro and
Ross River to a 4 week rotation as
opposed to a 2 week rotation we have run
in previous years. With this new rotation
you will see 2 trucks along with 2 delivery
drivers as to ensure that all deliveries are
made in a quick and efficient manner.
Our residential monthly account holders
will not be affected by the rotation, and
we will work with our commercial
customers to meet any extra fuel
requirements they may need. For non
account holders there will a $650.00
minimum fuel delivery charge in effect as
in all other communities. I would like to
remind all residents that our Auto-
Delivery customers receive a $0.04/liter
discount with no worries of an empty
tank. If you would like to open up an
account please contact our Credit
Manager @ 867-633-8806.
If you have any questions or concerns
regarding the matter feel free to contact
our Operations Manager @ 867-633-
FARO TO GET NEW
WATER LINE
During the month of September, 2011
construction will begin on the installation
of a new raw water supply line for our
community.
This new 8” insulated water supply line is
intended to replace an aging uninsulated
steel line that was installed 36 years ago.
The new line will run a distance of 1200
metres from the pumphouses at the river
all the way to our main distribution
pumphouse (PH#3 next to our
administration building) where chlorine is
added to ensure the safety of our drinking
water supply.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR SAFETY
CONSIDERATIONS that ATV’s and motor
bikes stay clear of the road that leads to
the pumphouses near the river. This will
be the exact route of the new water line
and heavy equipment will be working in
the area for two months. It is simply too
easy to get too close to a heavy backhoe
that is swinging in full motion and digging
a trench for the water line. And it is
similarly too easy to fall into the excavated
trench if dirt bikes get too close to the
excavation. The simplest safety protection
is just to STAY CLEAR BY STAYING AWAY.
The project is expected to be completed by
the end of October.
ASSESSING OUR WATER SYSTEM CONDITION:
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
The Town of Faro is committed to ensuring our water infrastructure is reliable, efficient and affordable, and that it
continues to provide safe drinking water for all our citizens.
The Problem
• Our 2011 Conceptual Design Report reveals that the unidentified water losses from our system are 40 times that of
a system in good repair. Significant losses may indicate poor water main condition;
• Water mains are expensive to maintain and replace.
• The town intends to request Yukon government funding for system rehabilitation but we need to motivate our
application by identifying areas where pipe replacement is required. The unidentified losses may be caused by
losses in individual properties through bleeders, which have not been turned off or leaking toilets and faucets.
• In order to confirm the leakage from the mains and hence assess the condition of the system, we need to eliminate
the losses, which may be occurring inside properties.
What We Propose To Do
• Measure losses in sections of mains isolated by closing valves. To make these measurements meaningful, it will be
necessary to shut the main supply valve inside each property, which is supplied from the isolated section of main,
for a period of a few hours during the day. Residents are requested to store sufficient water for use in this period.
• Sections of mains serving businesses and institutions will be tested after hours.
• Residents will be advised in advance of the intended shut-down and requested to shut the main supply valve if
they will be away. Team members will knock on doors to confirm that valves have been shut before testing begins.
In rare cases where the main supply valve does not shut tight, it may be necessary to shut the bleeder, the supply to
toilets and to inspect other fittings to ensure that no water is flowing.
• Water to be used to test the isolated system will be obtained from outdoor hose bibs on adjacent properties with
the owner’s informed consent.
This work is essential to maintaining an efficient and cost-effective water distribution system. In order to achieve
accurate results from this assessment we require that the main shut off valve inside the dwelling be closed and that
the residents refrain from using any appliance that uses hot or cold water i.e. please do NOT use your taps,
showers, toilets, washing machines, dish washers etc. for the duration of the assessment. You may want to set
aside some containers of water for personal use during this time but we do not anticipate loss of service for a period
longer than that shown above.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding the above please do not hesitate to contact Jim McLachlan,
Telephone No. 867-994-2758.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused but hope that you understand that this is a necessary operation for the
maintenance of your water system.

The third full moon in a season with four full
moons is called a blue moon, as described in
the Maine Farmers' Almanac. Until recently it
was commonly misunderstood that the
second full moon in a month was the blue
moon. However, it was recently discovered by
Sky & Telescope magazine and reported on
NPR that the interpretation of a blue moon as
the second full moon of the month was
erroneously reported in an issue of Sky &
Telescope dating back to 1946 and then
perpetuated by other media.
Look up!
October 12 - Full Moon. The Moon will be directly opposite the Earth from the Sun and will be
fully illuminated as seen from Earth. This phase occurs at 02:06 UTC. This full moon was
known by early Native American tribes as the Full Hunters Moon because at this time of year
the leaves are falling and the game is fat and ready to hunt. This will also be the smallest full
moon of the year because it will be near apogee, its farthest point from the Earth.
October 16 - Comet Elinin. Newly discovered comet Elinin will make its closest approach to
the Earth on October 16. The comet was discovered on December 10, 2010 by Russian
amateur astronomer Leonid Elenin. It is estimated that the comet will reach 6th magnitude as
it makes its closest approach. This will make it just barely visible to the naked eye. With a
good pair of binoculars and a little determination, you may be able to get a good look at this
new comet during mid October.
October 21, 22 - Orionids Meteor Shower. The Orionids is an average shower producing about
20 meteors per hour at their peak. This shower usually peaks on the 21st, but it is highly
irregular. A good show could be experienced on any morning from October 20 - 24, and some
meteors may be seen any time from October 17 - 25. The nearly last quarter moon may hide
some of the faintest meteors this year. Best viewing will be to the east after midnight. Be
sure to find a dark location far from city lights.
October 26 - New Moon. The Moon will be directly between the Earth and the Sun and will
not be visible from Earth. This phase occurs at 19:56 UTC.
October 29 - Jupiter at Opposition. The giant planet will be at its closest approach to Earth
and its face will be fully illuminated by the Sun. This is the best time to view and photograph
Jupiter and its moons. The giant planet will be a big and bright as it gets in the night sky. A
medium-sized telescope should be able to show you some of the details in Jupiter's cloud
bands. A good pair of binoculars should allow you to see Jupiter's four largest moons,
appearing as bright dots on either side of the planet.
Terry Fox Run
I would like to send a big Thank-you to
everyone to supported me in the Terry Fox Run
this year! Total funds raised in Faro was almost
$800! Faroites continue to support this very
worthwhile cause and I am sure that you will
help someone in need that is going through a
difficult time. If you would still like to donate,
please contact me and I will make sure you get
a receipt for income tax purposes. If you have
already donated and could drop off the money or
you could contact me & I will come pick it up,
that would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you again Faroites!! ☺
We are so excited to welcome Luke Gregory Grantham
to our family!!
Gramma's arms.
He weighed 7lbs, 11oz and has a dusting of reddish hair!
Thanks to everybody who welcomed us home with such
enthusiasm and joy, especially to Kara Went and
everyone who brought us meals through Friendship
Feasts, to Brittany Terleski and everyone who organized
the baby shower and to Kirsten and all the GNO girls for
all the messages, visits, and help with baby cuddling.
We are so blessed to be surrounded by the love of our
community!
Thank you all of the
Friendship Feast
meals during August
and September!
Your willingness to help
out members of our
community is much
