Yukon’s June unemployment rate of 7.4% is a decrease of 1.4
percentage points compared to last month (May 2012) and an
increase of 1.4 percentage points compared to same month last
year (June 2011).
In 2011, there was a total of 31,444 aircraft movements in
Whitehorse: 22,810 or 72.5%, were itinerant; 8,634 or 27.5% were
local movements. Of those 22,810 itinerant movements, 81.8%
were commercial, 15.8% private and 2.4% government. 32.9% of
all itinerant movements used Instrument Flight Rules and 67.0%
used Visual Flight Rules.

BIZARRE ORIGINS OF TODAY’S SAYINGS
The Saying: WIDE BERTH
A berth is the place where a ship is tied up or anchored. When the
anchor was lowered a ship would tend to move about on the anchor
cable so it was important to give it a wide berth to avoid collisions.
Today to give someone wide berth is to steer clear of them.

This phrase is believed to be derived from the old words will-ye, nillye
(or will-he, nill- he) meaning whether you want to or not (or
whether he wants to or not).

THE FIREFIGHTER August 2012
This summer all of our members have improved their skills and abilities through study (our firefighters manual is
1,100 pages) and through hands on practical experience.
Training to be a firefighter is often just plain hard work. The gear is hot and the book is long. On the other hand the
satisfaction of a successful training session and the even greater satisfaction of a fire well fought is a wonderful
thing. For those of you who are thinking of joining the fire department but who have concerns about such things as
safety let me explain how our training works. When you join the fire department you will be asked to fill out some
paperwork. As an employee of Faro you will receive remuneration for our weekly training sessions. Also, you will be
covered by WCB for injuries in the workplace. As well, we carry an additional policy that will cover expenses beyond
the regular WCB coverage. You will also be given temporary gear. Boots, pants, coat, helmet, balaclava, gloves, etc.
If you continue with your training we will purchase new gear tailored to your measurements.
Training consists of working toward three goals: Firefighter Basic, Firefighter Advanced and Firefighter Level One. We
have weekly training sessions as well as more intensive sessions over a week or weekend in which the Fire Marshal
comes to Faro and walks everyone attaining a competency through the classroom and hands on work. By Level One
you will be trained to enter a live fire situation in full gear including Self Contained Breathing Apparatus. I should
point out that the Fire Marshal isn’t at all afraid to tell people they aren’t ready to move on to the next level. This
can be embarrassing but also reassuring. It’s good to know that out trainers have our safety foremost in their minds.
September 8, 2012 is a good date to remember if you like free food.
Ideally I would like to see all our members reach Level One but don’t let the idea of live fire keep you from checking
us out. If you feel you can’t achieve the higher levels remember that we also need truck drivers, pump operators,
rehab attendants, hose pullers and rollers, air tank fillers, truck washers, gear checkers and on and on and on. And
who knows, maybe you will surprise yourself and find that you want to push your limits, learn new skills and take
your training to the next level.
September 8, 2012 we will be having an open house at the fire hall. Everyone is invited to come out for some
BBQ and a tour of the hall, the trucks and the gear. Bring yourself, your friends, your family and especially your
questions.

Faro RCMP would like to thank and congratulate all the volunteers and participants of the Golf and Softball
Tournaments. RCMP members and their families participated in both events and had a great time. Organizers
deserve a huge pat on the back for operating fun, safe and well attended events. The Faro community was well
represented and positive comments from all who visited our town were heard everywhere we went. Great Job!!
A quick note about bears...please continue to be diligent with your efforts to keep the bears out of town. Be
particularly careful not to leave anything around your home that will attract a bear. For example, burn off and clean
BBQ’s, dog food should not be left out.
Traffic: As the highway crews work to improve Mitchell Road up to the Robert Campbell highway, please be
respectful of flag persons and signage reducing speeds.
Speed limits in Faro are being reviewed; as always motorists should be aware of kids out enjoying the last of the
summer break but not always paying attention to traffic.
Back country: Hunting season is upon us, our area is popular with local hunters as well as those from away; before
you embark on your trip please ensure you’re prepared. An important part of that preparation is establishing a plan
laying out duration, route and destination. Please identify and leave that plan with a responsible person to monitor
your safe return.
If plans include spending time on the many lakes and rivers; please be mindful that levels are still considerably high
and currents strong. Please ensure life jackets are worn and you have on board the safety equipment you would
need in an emergency.
Please respect the environment; when it comes to garbage if you carried it in, please carry it out.
Note....RCMP have conducted some research and the local Grayling and Jack Fish are on the bite...see you there.

Faro Detachment would like to remind members of the community about our Emergency Phone located at the front entrance to the
Detachment. This phone line is connected directly to Whitehorse RCMP dispatch. The caller only has to hold the phone to their ear and
someone from Whitehorse Dispatch will answer. This will ensure a quicker response from Faro RCMP members.

Singin’ the New Money Blues.....?
Word is that Canada’s new $100 & $50 bills’ polymer design was originally done by Australia so surfers didn’t destroy their money in sea
water. Interesting! According to the Bank of Canada website, the new money will last 2.5 times longer, so production & replacement
costs will be much less. They will be better for the environment, and be recycled!. The new $20 bills will be rolled out in late 2012, and
$10 & $5 will be coming sometime in 2013. They sure are pretty, and if you go the Bank of Canada website (www.bankofcanada.ca), you
can see really good info and great history on the new bills specs and chosen themes. While in the bank in Whitehorse last month, the
tellers offered some advice about caring for the new bills, and I thought I’d share this with you;
- Don’t leave them in your pockets when you do laundry – the dryer MAY be too hot and destroy (shrivel) them
- Don’t keep your money in the freezer – even though they say the bills hold up in really cold weather, they CAN freeze and crack
-Don’t leave them in your wallet or dash of your car when it’s really hot – they can stick together quite easily if they get too hot!
-The bills cannot be torn, but if they get nicked or cut they can come apart (apparently, you can take them back to the bank to be
exchanged if this happens)

FARO FLYING DOLPHINS
The Faro Flying Dolphins have been
hard at work in the pool this past 6
weeks and everyone from ages 6 to
56 have made great progress thanks
to our pool staff and coaches, Alana,
Dana and Angela. Thanks ladies!
We wanted to share some of the fun
and skills we’ve learned so the
Dolphins will be hosting the Pelly
River Swim Challenge on August 11
and 12th. Swimmers from Ross
River, Carmacks and Pelly Crossing
have been invited to join us for
some skill building, dry land training
and a whole bunch of fun.
Right after our wrap-up lunch on
Sunday our swimmers will hit the
pool to swim the lengths required
based on our Swim-a-thon
fundraising. It looks like we could
use lots of help because we’re
already at 600 and with every
Freezie sold or dollar donated we
swim another length. Come down to
the pool around 1:00 o’clock and
you can swim some laps for us, help
us raise more money by buying a hot
dog or freezie or just come and
cheer us on.
It’s such a short swimming season.
Come and enjoy it with us.

Campbell region interpretive centre
“Dena Zagi” in action at the CRIC T’ai Chi with Lucy
July was a little busier than June, but still way down compared to the
recent years. So far we had 460 Tourist in July. A lot has to do with the
bad condition of the Campbell Highway up from Watson Lake.
We had two Fire Side Chats in July and the Pelly Valley Festival. It
seems like more and more people like to play Bocce. You should come
too and try it out. Our next Fire Side Chats will be

Yukon government announces
new Community Safety
Awards
WHITEHORSE—A new Community
Safety Award has been created to
give Yukoners a way to recognize
their fellow citizens who make
significant contributions to
community safety in the territory.
“Our government created this award
to celebrate individual contributions
that help ensure that Yukon remains a
safe place to live and visit,” Justice
Minister Mike Nixon said. “This
award will give Yukoners the
recognition they deserve for going
the extra mile in creating safer
communities.”`
The creation of the Community
Safety Award stems from the Sharing
Common Ground report, which noted
that the contributions by Yukon
citizens and RCMP to community
safety often go unrecognized.
Individuals, RCMP members, youth,
community groups and programs are
all eligible to be nominated in a
number of award categories. To
nominate an individual or program
for an award, submit a nomination
form by August 10. Awards will be
presented at a public event in
Whitehorse on September 18.

Friendship Feasts is a made in Faro program, it is not affiliated
with Social Services, the Faro Health Centre, or any
government program. If you are able to make a meal for a
family once in a while, please get yourself on the Friendship
Feast list. You may get called once in 6 months.
To receive meals, you just need to nominate yourself or
someone who you know needs meals. Generally, Friendship
Feasts provides meals when there has been a death or other
hardship in the family, when someone is recovering from an
operation or sickness, or when a family brings home a new
baby. Getting involved in Friendship Feasts is a great way to
get involved in our community and to meet people in town in
a meaningful way.

to sign yourself up! We are always looking for new folks who
are able to provide a meal.

A SMALL CHANGE IS COMING
Most people in Faro choose to place their household
garbage in our designated bear proof steel bins located
in convenient places round the town. However if you
choose to make a trip to our solid waste site, for
whatever reason, we would ask that you adhere to our
new policy.
It would appear that people who make a trip to our
solid waste site throw their garbage over the bank in a
designated dumping area. That practice appears to be
causing some problems at the site. No sooner than
people have left when the ravens, gulls, eagles and an
odd bear go into “attack mode”. They see very easy
pickings and all the while the plastic bags that are
ripped open get spread all over, blown around by the
wind.
EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY, if you chose to take
household garbage to the solid waste site that will
attract animals; we would like you to put it in the two
steel garbage containers that are at the bottom of the
site. We dump out these containers every Monday and
Thursday providing you with ample room to throw out
any household waste.
NOTE: grass cuttings, wood, steel, rug scraps etc do
not apply to this new procedure. ONLY the household
waste that would be an attractant to wildlife is what
we are trying to exercise more control over.
With your cooperation we feel that we can get better
control of the windblown and bird/animal scattered
debris at our solid waste site.

DO YOU HAVE ANY OLD TIRES JUST LYING AROUND??
Sometime in August, Yukon Territorial Government will be
awarding a contract to pickup old scrap tires and haul them out
of the territory to a re-processing facility.
Faro is on the list to have our scrap tires (up to 24” in diameter)
taken away from our dump site.
If you have any tires lying around that are in your way please
take them to our pile of tires at the dump. Preferably the scrap
tire hauler would like them with the rims off the tires.
And remember....old tires lying around just collect water. They
then become a fertile ground for breeding mosquitoes. And
we’ve got too many of them now!!

Hello swimmers and non-swimmers out there,
Town of Faro Pool News – August 2012
Here is an update on what the month of July has held for us at the pool. Swim lessons are in full force, running every Tuesday and
Thursday mornings. This session we have 12 kids participating!!! If you plan on having your children in our August session you need to
call the Recreation Center and get your kids names on our class lists. This is crucial in building classes and ensuring we can fit all ages
and swimming abilities into the appropriate levels. If you have any questions in regards to lessons are would like your child assessed
please don’t hesitate to contact the pool.
The Rec Center has been running day camps and we had the participants swimming every day. It was great to have that many people
in the pool especially with all the hot weather we’ve been having. The Faro Flying Dolphins are also escaping the heat with practices
every day. We have 10 members in swim club this summer and they have been working hard at building their skills and increasing their
fitness levels.
We are still going strong with our aqua fit and always welcome new comers. If you are interested in joining us we have classes on
Wednesday and Friday from 6:00pm – 7:00pm. Aqua fit is a low impact work out that works on cardio strengthening and muscle
building.

August 2 - Full Moon. The Moon will be
directly opposite the Earth from the Sun
and will be fully illuminated as seen
from Earth. This phase occurs at 03:27
UTC.
August 6 - Curiosity Rover at Mars.
NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) is
scheduled to land on the red planet
between August 6 and August 20, 2012.
Officially named Curiosity, it is an
autonomous rover similar to the Spirit
and Opportunity rovers that previously
visited Mars. This much larger rover will
carry many more instruments and
experiments than its previous cousins.
Curiosity’s high definition color cameras
will photograph the Martian surface
while a host of instruments will sample
the soil and air and search for organic
compounds.
August 12, 13 - Perseids Meteor Shower.
The Perseids is one of the best meteor
showers to observe, producing up to 60
meteors per hour at their peak. The
shower's peak usually occurs on August
13 & 14, but you may be able to see
some meteors any time from July 23 -
August 22. The radiant point for this
shower will be in the constellation
Perseus. The near last quarter moon will
be hanging around for the show, but
shouldn’t be too much of a problem for
a shower with up to 60 meteors per
hour. Find a location far from city lights
and look to the northeast after midnight.
August 17 - New Moon. The Moon will be
directly between the Earth and the Sun
and will not be visible from Earth. This
phase occurs at 15:54 UTC.
August 24 - Neptune at Opposition. The
blue planet will be at its closest
approach to Earth and its face will be
fully illuminated by the Sun. This is the
best time to view Neptune. Due to its
distance, it will only appear as a tiny
blue dot in all but the most powerful
telescopes.
August 31 - Full Moon. The Moon will be
directly opposite the Earth from the Sun
and will be fully illuminated as seen
from Earth. This phase occurs at 13:58
UTC. Since this is the second full moon
in the same month, it is known as a blue
moon. This rare calendar event only
happens once every few years, giving
rise to the term, “once in a blue moon.”

What is a Blue Moon?
There are in fact two definitions
for a blue moon. According to
the more recent definition, a blue
moon is the second full moon in
a calendar month. For a blue
moon to occur, the first of the
full moons must appear at or near
the beginning of the month so
that the second will fall within
the same month (the average
span between two moons is 29.5
days).
The full Moon on
Aug. 31, 2012
will be this type of blue moon; it
will be the second full moon in
one month.
Can there be two blue moons in a
single calendar year? Yes. It last
happened in 1999. There were
two full moons in January and
two full moons in March and no
full moon in February. So both
January and March had Blue
Moons.
The next year of double blue
moons is coming up in 2018.

EFFY CROFT MEMORIAL CO-ED SLOW PITCH BALL
TOURNAMENT
We had a great baseball weekend on July 27, 28 and 29. Nine teams came out and played a great weekend of slo-pitch in
our beautiful little town.
We had 3 teams from Whitehorse, 1 team from Carmacks, 1 team from Mayo, 1 team from Ross River, and 3 teams
from Faro!
The tournament was set up in a triple elimination format, giving all the teams lots of games.
Team Mis-Matched Hooligans (from Mayo) won first place
Team Here for Beer (Whitehorse) won second place
Team Skookum (Carmacks) won third place
Team Faro Master Batters won fourth place
The MVP's of the tournament were:
