Arctic Edge Skating Club NewsThanks everyone for the great skating season!Our skaters showed <strong>of</strong>f their skills with style in a great wrap-up show in between periods <strong>of</strong> the final hockey game onSunday March 24th. Our CanSKaters and Pre-school skaters showed <strong>of</strong>f their abilities and speed in racing to get a newstuffed animal at the end <strong>of</strong> the ice while rocking out to "Celebration"! Trinity and Zach showed <strong>of</strong>f great soloperformances and there was an encore performance <strong>of</strong> Seussical from the Whitehorse ice show "Broadway on Ice"!I would like to express a huge thanks to all our volunteers and to all the parents <strong>of</strong> the club for their support anddedication this season. My on ice staff - Emily, Morgan, Elijah, Glenda, and Marilyn - worked so hard every day making itthe best learning opportunity for the little ones! Yes, it’s that time <strong>of</strong> the yearagain: these licenses expire March 31 st <strong>of</strong> every year. <strong>The</strong> licenses for the <strong>2013</strong>-2014 season are hereand available. In <strong>Faro</strong>, you can get your new Hunting and Angling licenses at our <strong>of</strong>fice or at theTerritorial Agent located at the Liquor Store. <strong>The</strong> new Fishing Regulations Summary will be availablesoon but the new Hunting Regulations Summary will not be available until the end <strong>of</strong> July.<strong>The</strong> 2012-<strong>2013</strong> Hunting Season has now expired for all species <strong>of</strong> animals as <strong>of</strong> March 31, <strong>2013</strong>. Nonew bison or elk permits will be issued until there has been a review <strong>of</strong> this past season’s hunts andthe dates, zones and bag limits for the <strong>2013</strong>-2014 season has been determined.Applications for permit hunts will be available at all Yukon Environment <strong>of</strong>fices startingapproximately early May, and the deadline for applications will be the third Friday <strong>of</strong> June. Watch foradvertisements for exact dates.We are teaming up with Yukon College to <strong>of</strong>fer another HEED course here in <strong>Faro</strong> this spring. This is the best time <strong>of</strong> the month to observe faintobjects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is nomoonlight to interfere.<strong>April</strong> 14 - Conjunction <strong>of</strong> the Moon and Jupiter. <strong>The</strong> Moon will passabout two degrees <strong>of</strong> the giant planet Jupiter in the evening sky.<strong>The</strong> crescent moon will be at magnitude -10.6 and Jupiter will beat magnitude -2.1. Look for both objects in the west after sunset.<strong>The</strong> pair will be visible in the evening sky for about 3 hours aftersunset.<strong>April</strong> 20 - Astronomy Day Part 1. Astronomy Day is an annualevent intended to provide a means <strong>of</strong> interaction between thegeneral public and various astronomy enthusiasts, groups andpr<strong>of</strong>essionals. <strong>The</strong> theme <strong>of</strong> Astronomy Day is "BringingAstronomy to the People," and on this day astronomy andstargazing clubs and other organizations around the world willplan special events. You can find out about special local events bycontacting your local astronomy club or planetarium. You can als<strong>of</strong>ind more about Astronomy Day by checking the Web site for theAstronomical League.<strong>April</strong> 21, 22 - Lyrids Meteor Shower. <strong>The</strong> Lyrids is an averageshower, usually producing about 20 meteors per hour at its peak.It is produced by dust particles left behind by comet C/1861 G1Thatcher, which was discovered in 1861. <strong>The</strong> shower runs annuallyfrom <strong>April</strong> 16-25. It peaks this year on the night <strong>of</strong> the night <strong>of</strong> the21st and morning <strong>of</strong> the 22nd. <strong>The</strong>se meteors can sometimesproduce bright dust trails that last for several seconds. <strong>The</strong> nearlyfull moon will be a problem this year, blocking out all but thebrightest meteors. Best viewing will be from a dark location aftermidnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Lyra, but canappear anywhere in the sky.<strong>April</strong> 25 - Full Moon. <strong>The</strong> Moon will be directly opposite the Earthfrom the Sun and will be fully illuminated as seen from Earth. Thisphase occurs at 19:57 UTC. This full moon was known by earlyNative American tribes as the Full Pink Moon because it markedthe appearance <strong>of</strong> the moss pink, or wild ground phlox, which isone <strong>of</strong> the first spring flowers. This year, it is also known as thePaschal Full Moon because it is the first full moon <strong>of</strong> the springseason.<strong>April</strong> 25 - Partial Lunar Eclipse. A partial lunar eclipse occurs whenthe Moon passes through the Earth's partial shadow, or penumbra,and only a portion <strong>of</strong> it passes through the darkest shadow, orumbra. During this type <strong>of</strong> eclipse a part <strong>of</strong> the Moon will darkenas it moves through the Earth's shadow. <strong>The</strong> eclipse will be visiblethroughout most <strong>of</strong> Africa, Europe, Asia, and Australia.<strong>April</strong> 28 - Saturn at Opposition. <strong>The</strong> ringed planet will be at itsclosest approach to Earth and its face will be fully illuminated bythe Sun. This is the best time to view and photograph Saturn andits moons. A medium-sized or larger telescope will allow you tosee Saturn's rings and a few <strong>of</strong> its brightest moons.
