HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
FARO RCMP DETACHMENT
We hope everyone enjoyed ringing in the New Year and look forward to the longer days just around the corner.
With the new year the Faro Detachment will be seeking the local children’s assistance in the apprehension of a Garden
Gnome reported to be in the Faro area fishing without a licence! If you notice this item around town, please help a
child under the age of 12 to return him to Detachment for a reward. As with any crime the more eyes watching and
people working together, the more effectively we can solve problems.
We’d like to bring some attention to a potentially dangerous situation...the chimneys on your home. With the cold
temperatures ice can build up and plug the chimney. Please take the time to look up on your roof and those of your
neighbors for the signs that the furnace or wood stove may need maintenance.
The Faro community is very fortunate to have so many trails and open areas for snowmobiling and outdoor fun. As you
chose your route to get in and out of town please attempt to avoid unnecessary snowmobile pressure on the Faro Golf
Course. Significant damage can be done, inadvertently, by disturbing the grass while riding on the course. The greens
are extremely sensitive. Please be respectful of the hard work your friends, neighbors and town staff put into the golf
course. We are very fortunate to have it and we can all help to keep in great condition. Also, the cross country skiers in
Faro have groomed 3.2 km of trail around the outside of the course. With the warmer weather please, grab your skis
and give it a try.
With these warm temperatures there is no good reason to stay inside. Be sure to plan your outdoor activities well and
prepare for things that may not go as predicted. Pack plenty of gear for break downs or rapidly changing conditions.
Let someone know where your going and when you will return. If possible try not to venture too far on your
snowmobile without a partner. Getting stuck or breaking down is a real possibility and the deeper the snow gets the
more difficult it is to walk home. Two sleds are better than one!
A few reminders about snowmobiles as we head into January... If you’re traveling on a public road you must be a
licensed driver. Your snowmobile must be registered, insured and you must wear a helmet. If you’re not traveling on a
public road we ask you to do so safely and exercise common sense. The trails are not very wide so be mindful of your
speed and the possibility of oncoming traffic, skiers or others enjoying the outdoors. As always, remember a
snowmobile is a motor vehicle. Alcohol and motor vehicles do not mix. The same rules apply to your snowmobile that
apply to your vehicle, whether you’re riding on the roads or the trails.
Please keep ice safety in mind, danger can be hidden closer than you think from thin ice to overflow. Good practice to
stay away from rivers where the current can make the ice unpredictable.
Have a fun and safe January!!!
To contact Faro RCMP in an emergency, call 994-5555 or 1-867-667-5555. These calls will be answered by Whitehorse OCC who will
have officers respond to the call. For general inquiries in the community, call 994-2677. If there is no answer, please phone 994-5555
and an officer will be contacted.
Faro Detachment would like to remind members of the community about our Emergency Phone located at the front entrance to the
Detachment. This phone line is connected directly to Whitehorse RCMP dispatch. The caller only has to hold the phone to their ear
and someone from Whitehorse Dispatch will answer. This will ensure a quicker response from Faro RCMP members.

Happy New Year Skaters!
We have a big fundraiser planned for January
12th! Arctic Edge Skating Club is teaming up with
Faro Mad Sled Dogs Hockey to do a community
bottle drive!
We will travel the town of Faro starting at 10am
Saturday, January 12th to gather returnables. We
will then return to the rink where the kids can
skate and the grown ups can sort the returnables
with the help of Peter Kazda! Please leave your
recylclables curbside by 10am so the volunteers
can pick them up easily!! And please remember
not to include recyclables - just returnables!
The Hockey Players and Skaters will be out in full
force and this is a super easy way to show your
support for these young people!
Also, please ask Cyndy or Michelle if there is any
way you can help on the day of the drive!
EDITORS NOTES..... As we begin the New Year according to the Georgian calendar, it seems most folks think of the New
Year as a time or resolutions, goal setting, and reflection on the year past. In Anglo-Saxon times, January was considered the
month of the wolf, because wolves came in to villages searching for food. Let’s hope that is not the case here this year!, but
in a time of such rapid change, I thought it was interesting(and a bit comforting actually) that here in Faro, we still consider
this as a possibility. While some changes feel very sudden, some things don’t change at all. As we're now "over the hump" in
terms of daylight hours, heading into 2013, and know for sure that the Mayans weren’t really predicting anything other than
a new cycle in their calendar system - here's to a positive year for you, your family, and friends.
BLAST FROM THE PAST
Do you remember milestones in Faro’s history?
Have old pictures of Faro you would like to share?
thefrozenmukluk@gmail.com
While not really a blast from Faro’s past (or even the Yukon’s past really), I saw this on Facebook this past week and loved
it. These are the 1942 New Years’ Resolutions of Woody Guthrie (who would be 100 yrs old if he were alive today). I think
they are as valid today as any day, especially maybe here in the Yukon. Enjoy all, & Thanks Jackie
THE SHED - FOLD AND CODE
The Shed is available 24/7 for anyone
who wants to leave and/or take good
used clothing. Please do not smoke
in the shed; the odour penetrates the
clothes and smoking can be a fire
hazard.
Thanks to those who have taken time
to fold and code clothes from the box.
It’s a great help.
A big thank you to whoever has been
helping to keep The Shed neat and
tidy. It is greatly appreciated.
If anyone is willing to take some items
to the Salvation Army on a trip to
Whitehorse, please contact the Bakers
at 994-2442. About once a month we
remove some of the items that have
been there for a while.
Thanks.
Family Literacy Day
Family Literacy Day is coming up on January 27, 2013
and this year's theme is 15 Minutes of Fun. Family
Literacy Day is a national awareness
initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999
and held annually to raise awareness of the
importance of reading and engaging in other literacyrelated
activities as a family.
Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity
with children is crucial to a child's development. Even
just 15 minutes a day can improve a child's literacy
skills dramatically. For more information, visit:
REIKI
Reiki is a healing technique used for relaxation, stress
reduction and for balance of the chakras in the body. It is a
non-invasive procedure that has been compared to a relaxing
massage. The healing takes place when the practitioner uses
“life force energy” in a concentrated manner and directs it
into the patient’s body. It does not involve any pain, and in
most cases, removes any existing pain from the body.
Faro Community Energy Plan 28 December 2012
Planning for Faro’s energy future is underway!
The Town of Faro has commissioned the Pembina Institute, in
partnership with Yukon Government’s Energy Solutions Centre, to
complete a Community Energy Plan. Feeding directly into our
ongoing land-use planning process, the Community Energy Plan will
provide insight into how we reduce our energy consumption, use
local sources of energy, and manage our infrastructure. The actions
we take from the plan will save us money, reduce the Town’s
greenhouse gas emissions, and fight climate change.
To help Pembina with their work the Town will host a small
meeting in early January with the Energy Solutions Centre to
provide some early input into what the plan will address. Over the
next few months Pembina will also be working with us to collect
information about the way that we use energy. They will use this
inventory to recommend how we can better manage our energy use
going forward. The Town will look forward to hosting Pembina in
February or March to review their inventory and develop the
Community Energy Plan.
SNOW CLEARING
OPERATIONS
During our snow clearing
operations on Faro streets this
winter, it would be very much
appreciated, wherever possible, if
vehicles could be parked in your
own driveways, or perhaps the
one across the street.
It makes our job so much easier
for the efficient removal of snow if
this task is not impeded by parked
vehicles.
Thank you!
Get a Healthy Start to your New Year and join the Calorie Crunch Challenge!
January 14 th - February 25 th , 2013
Whether your goal is to lose weight, maintain your current weight or to burn off those extra calories consumed over
the holiday season, RPAY and the City of Whitehorse have partnered up to challenge you to get ACTIVE every day
for6 weeks and track your calories burned with a goal of reaching 10,000 or more calories burned by the end of the
challenge.
Calories are energy that fuels our body; much like gasoline fuels our cars. The calories you need each day to maintain a
healthy lifestyle depend on your age, sex, weight, and current activity level. If you exceed the number of calories your
body requires you will eventually gain weight. The opposite goes for weight loss.
Experts say that burning 250 calories (approximately 20-30 minutes of high intensity exercise) per day can add up to
1/2lb weight loss in one week and burning 500 calories can add up to 1lb a week.
This challenge is intended for everyone - encourage, friends, co-workers, and employees to take part in this FREE, FUN
and ACTIVE Challenge! Although children are welcome to join this challenge, it is intended for adults. Children should
be encouraged to focus on being active every day for 60 minutes.
What is the Calorie Crunch Challenge?
An online challenge from January 14 th , 2013 - February 25 th , 2013 that will allow participants to log onto their own
personal profile, enter their daily activity and calories burned and track their daily progress.
All participants will receive milestone prizes along their way. At 1,000 calories burned participants will get a water
bottle, at 5,000 it's a pedometer and at 10,000 your name will be entered into a draw to WIN a 10 Punch Pass at the
Canada Games Centre and other great prizes!
How does the Calorie Crunch Challenge work?
Participants will log into their profile to input their daily activity (type of activity, length of exercise and intensity
level) which will calculate calories burned per activity and graph total progress.
The goal of the challenge is to burn 10,000 or more by the end of the 6 weeks. This is equal to 250 - 500 calories
burned by exercise most days of the week. Please refer to the Physical Activity Guidelines link for further information
on exercise intensity and length to achieve desired calorie burned outcome.
What will Participants Need?
Just your participation and computer access to log your daily activity and calories burned.
NOTE: The challenge is intended to encourage participants to be more active daily and to learn more about how
calories burned through exercise can prevent weight gain and other healthy related issue and can also aid in the
maintenance of a healthy lifestyle.
Participants are encourage to burn between 10,000 to 14,000 calories through exercise within the 6 week challenge
and it is not recommended to exceed over 20,000 or 750 calories per day due to the health related risk factors.
Look up!
January 3, 4 - Quadrantids
Meteor Shower. The
Quadrantids are an above
average shower, with up to
40 meteors per hour at their
peak. The shower usually
peaks on January 3 & 4, but
some meteors can be visible
from January 1 - 5. The near
last quarter moon will hide
many of the fainter meteors
with its glare. Best viewing
will be from a dark location
after midnight. Look for
meteors radiating from the
constellation Bootes.
January 11 - New Moon. The
Moon will be directly
between the Earth and the
Sun and will not be visible
from Earth. This phase occurs
at 19:44 UTC.
January 27 - Full Moon. The
Moon will be directly opposite
the Earth from the Sun and
will be fully illuminated as
seen from Earth. This phase
occurs at 04:38 UTC.
2013 – CHINESE YEAR OF THE WATER SNAKE
Welcome to Year of the Water Snake! Snake is the Yin to last year's Dragon Yang. That
said, Snake does not settle for mediocrity, either. We're likely to see significant
ALL ABOUT JANUARY.........
January named after Janus, god of beginnings. Around 713
BC, the period between the 10th month (December) and
the first month (March) became Ianuarius and Februarius.
In 45 BC, Julius Caesar invented the Julian Calendar,
switching some months around and basing it on a 365 day
year, with a leap day every four years.
It was a fairly good system, only off by 11 minutes a year.
Of course, that can really add up after a few centuries, so,
in 1582, Pope Gegory XIII created the Gregorian Calendar,
which is the calendar the western world uses today.
With the Protestant reformation, with Catholics and the
non-Catholic Christians each believing the other was a
group of heretics, not everyone jumped on to Gregory's
calendar right away. 170 years after most of the rest of
the world changed, in England, and its American colonies,
the dates jumped from Wednesday 2 September 1752 to
Thursday 14 September 1752 within 24 hours.
Looking back, having been born on September 7, 1533,
Queen Elizabeth I missed her 19th birthday that year.
