In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved,
and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
We shall not sleep,
Food Safety Tips When Finding Spiders in Grapes
Fresh produce may have insects, scorpions, snakes, spiders or other living things in them that may be
injurious to consumers but the frequency of finding them is rare. The most common living thing that might
be injurious to human health and found in fresh produce is the black widow spider.
During the summer months and in the warm regions of the United States and Canada spiders can be
commonly found outside under shrubs and garden plants. Black widow spiders are distinctive due to their
shiny, round body, brown or black color and two reddish or yellowish triangles on the abdomen. The legs
are long and slender. The black widow spider will bite in self-defence, if physically disturbed. The spider's
venom is poisonous and should be treated properly and promptly. Children and adults who are not in good
physical health should take particular care. They should not interact with these spiders and avoid being
bitten.
Incidents of Black Widow Spiders
There is an increased frequency of finding black widow spiders in imported table grapes, especially during
the fall harvesting season for table grapes imported from California.. Spiders have always been in and
around grape vineyards. They eat insect pests that are found on grapes. The presence of spiders does not
damage or poison the grapes. When grapes are harvested, every bunch is carefully examined and placed
into a package. Some spiders may camouflage with the grape vines and escape the attention of the farm
worker. Grapes are also chilled prior to being transported. The chilling causes spiders to become dormant
and immobile, making their way to retailers and consumers' homes.
Safety Measures when Finding Spiders in Fresh Produce
Any spiders should be treated with caution. The best control is to get rid of the spider without touching it or
its web. Consumers are advised to wash their grapes thoroughly by placing them under running warm
water. This practice will clean the product of any extraneous matter and likely immobilize any live spiders by
washing them off into the sink. If a spider falls into the sink it is recommended that the spider be killed
rather than captured. If giving grapes to a toddler or young child it is recommended that they be removed
from the bunch.
Common name: Black Widow Spider.
Scientific name: Latrodectus mactans.
Characteristics: Black shiny body, about 6 mm long with a red hourglass shaped mark on the
underside of the abdomen.
Facts: Most spiders are not aggressive unless disturbed. All species are venomous.
Habitat: Most warm regions of eastern and central U.S., North American deserts and southern
Canada.
Food: Prey on other insects.
ANOTHER FUN AND SAFE HALLOWEEN;
Faro RCMP would like to extend thanks and congratulations to the
youth and residents of Faro for a great Halloween.
Faro RCMP enjoyed the family Halloween get together on Tuesday
October 30th at the Rec center.
RCMP patrolled the community by vehicle and on foot and observed
a community event that should be the envy of communities
everywhere. Houses were well decorated and home owners were
welcoming and friendly. A special congratulations goes to our older
youth who were observed participating with the younger children all
over town. The Costumes were great!
The ice is in! The hockey/skating season is upon us. Great job to the
volunteers who’ve worked toward getting the ice in. Looking
forward to seeing everyone at the rink in the coming weeks.
Plans for the 2012 Pelly River Hockey challenge are taking shape for
December 8 and 9. Youth from Carmacks, Pelly Crossing, Ross River
and this year Watson Lake have been invited and response is
positive.
A reminder to snowmobile riders, if you venture out; wear a helmet
and please be respectful of others when you travel past houses with
loud machines. Speed limits do apply and please respect them.
Winter driving conditions are here. Please be sure to adjust your
speed and allow time to stop your vehicle before your run into
trouble. Don’t let following too closely to another vehicle be the
cause of an accident.
Remembrance Day is coming up fast. Please make time to respect
and reflect on those that have made sacrifices so we may enjoy the
freedoms we do. We look forward to seeing everyone at the service
which will be at the Rec. center gym. Poppies will be available
around town, but please feel free to stop by the Detachment if you
need one.
Wishing everyone a safe November.
To contact Faro RCMP in an emergency, call 994 5555 or 1 867 667 5555. These calls will
be answered by Whitehorse OCC who will have officers respond to the call. For general
inquiries in the community, call 994 2677. If there is no answer, please phone 994 5555
and an officer will be contacted.
Faro Detachment would like to remind members of the community about our Emergency
Phone located at the front entrance to the Detachment. This phone line is connected
directly to Whitehorse RCMP dispatch. The caller only has to hold the phone to their ear
and someone from Whitehorse Dispatch will answer. This will ensure a quicker response
THE FIREFIGHTER
As a Fire Department we have been having a good year. All of our members have improved their skills and abilities
through study (our firefighters manual is 1,100 pages) and through hands on practical experience.
This year’s activities have included
1. Currently we have five new members working toward Firefighter Basic as well as several others working
toward Firefighter Advanced and Firefighter Level One.
2. We had a good turnout to our Open House. We also used the event to recruit new members who are now
faithfully attending training sessions.
3. Our foam slide at the Fireweed Festival was a huge success. Here’s the recipe.
Collect lots of soap (dish soap, bubble bath, bubble blower, etc.)
Find yourself a fire truck with a full tank of water
You will also need a foam nozzle and hose (at least 2” in diameter)
Acquire a roll (or two) of six mil poly
Gather an assortment of children
Choose a sloped piece of ground
Mix your soap and water (one litre of soap to one hundred litres of water)
Fire up the pump
Add children
Apply soap liberally to slide, children and the odd adult
I’m sorry, that should have read “the occasional adult.”
4. We have responded to a number of calls this year. Thankfully most were only smoke or water or false
alarms. We did however attend one call in which the fire was extinguished with the result that we were able
to save the entire structure.
5. Chief Austin and I are currently working on an online Fire Investigator course. This will give our department
even better capabilities in determining fire causes and as a result will also aid in making sure our town is a
safer place in which to live.
6. Recent sessions have included hydrant connections, classroom sessions, pulling hose from the trucks, nozzles
and water streams, fire department connections and how they aid sprinkler systems, proper use of turnout
gear and self-contained breathing apparatus.
7. Also, during Fire Prevention Week we were able to attend all the classes at DVG with demonstrations of fire
gear and discussions of how to respond if there is a fire.
DEL VAN GORDER
The Kids in Action store at DVG is run by
the Grade 3/4/5 class and is now open on
Wednesdays from 2:20-3:40. The store
carries new and used items for sale at low
prices - with profits going to charities of the
class’s choosing. Members of the public are
welcome to come into the school and check
out the store’s offerings each Wednesday!
The Kindergarten class is looking for any
costumes suitable for 4 and 5 year olds.
The costumes will be worn throughout the
year and will need to be easily washable. If
you have a costume you’d like to donate,
we would love to have you drop it off in the
DVG office.
Don't forget: the Faro Kettle's hot
beverages are a great way to warm up on
cold days. The Kettle continues to stay
open as long as business is good. The
current hours are Monday, Thursday, and
Friday 4 pm - 5:30. The Faro Kettle
continues to be a not-for-profit operation
that supports the employment of our town's
youth - a necessary requirement of the
Yukon's current graduation program. Please
REIKI
Reiki is a healing technique used for relaxation, stress
reduction and for balance of the chakras in the body. It is a
non-invasive procedure that has been compared to a relaxing
massage. The healing takes place when the practitioner uses
“life force energy” in a concentrated manner and directs it
into the patient’s body. It does not involve any pain, and in
most cases, removes any existing pain from the body.
GOT ANY OLD FURNITURE ITEMS YOU CAN’T SELL OR DON’T
WANT ??
So the Town of Faro has decided to help you move that old
unwanted couch, coffee table, computer, TV, love seat, kitchen
table and chairs or bicycles to a new owner. An 8’ x 20’ C-can
(container) has now been placed at the dump in which to
deposit this type of furniture item. The steel construction will
keep the rain and snow off the furniture items and the animals
out (if you close the doors securely when finished).
Instructions are on the container how to open (and close) the
doors securely. Please follow these instructions and it will
make the usage so much easier for the next person. The
items in the container are FREE to anybody who shows up and
needs them. The container has access doors at each end if
the item you want happens to be at the other end.
NOTE: there is no power in this container so the storage area
is unlit. You will have to use the headlights of your vehicle if
you are there after dark. Please do not deposit garbage
anywhere near the container and help us keep the area clean.
Everybody will benefit then.
EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY,
if you chose to take household garbage to the solid waste site
that will attract animals; we would like you to put it in the
two steel garbage containers that are at the bottom of the
site. We dump out these containers every Monday and
Thursday providing you with ample room to throw out any
household waste.
NOTE: grass cuttings, wood, steel, rug scraps etc do not apply
to this new procedure. ONLY the household waste that would
be an attractant to wildlife is what we are trying to exercise
more control over.
With your cooperation we feel that we can get better control
of the windblown and bird/animal scattered debris at our solid
waste site.
Thanking you in advance for your cooperation. Any questions
please call me at 994-2758.
November 13 - New
Moon. The Moon will be directly
between the Earth and the Sun
and will not be visible from Earth.
This phase occurs at 22:08 UTC.
November 13 - Total
Solar Eclipse. The path of totality
will only be visible in parts of
extreme northern Australia and
the southern Pacific Ocean. A
partial eclipse will be visible in
most parts of eastern Australia
and New Zealand.
November 17, 18 -
Leonids Meteor Shower. The
Leonids is one of the better
meteor showers to observe,
producing an average of 40
meteors per hour at their peak.
The shower itself has a cyclic
peak year every 33 years where
hundreds of meteors can be seen
each hour. The last of these
occurred in 2001. The shower
usually peaks on November 17 &
18, but you may see some
meteors from November 13 - 20.
The crescent moon will set early
in the evening leaving dark skies
for what should be an excellent
show. Look for the shower
radiating from the constellation
Leo after midnight, and be sure to
find a dark location for viewing.
November 27 -
Conjunction of Venus and Saturn.
These two bright planets will be
within 1 degree of each other in
the morning sky. Look to the east
around sunrise.
November 28 - Full
Moon. The Moon will be directly
opposite the Earth from the Sun
and will be fully illuminated as
seen from Earth. This phase
occurs at 14:46 UTC.
November 28 -
Penumbral Lunar Eclipse. The
eclipse will be visible throughout
most of Europe, eastern Africa,
Asia, Australia, the Pacific Ocean,
and North America.
Daylight Saving Time in Canada
In most of Canada Daylight Saving Time begins at 2:00 a.m. local time on the second Sunday in
March. On the first Sunday in November areas on Daylight Saving Time return to Standard Time
at 2:00 a.m. local time. During Daylight Saving Time turn your clocks ahead one hour. At the end
of Daylight Saving Time turn your clocks back one hour.
Time zone names and abbreviations in Canada change during Daylight Saving Time. Eastern
Standard Time (EST) becomes Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), and so forth with each time zone.
In 2011 Newfoundland and Labrador proclaimed an amendment to the Standard Time Act which
puts their observance of Daylight Saving Time in line with the rest of Canada effective
November 6, 2011. Previously, Newfoundland and Labrador began and ended Daylight Saving
Time one minute after midnight (12:01 a.m.) local time.
Some areas of Canada not using Daylight Saving Time include, Fort St. John, Charlie Lake, Taylor
and Dawson Creek in British Columbia, Creston in the East Kootenays, and most of
Saskatchewan (except Denare Beach and Creighton).
Previously, Canada had observed Daylight Saving Time from the first Sunday in April until the
last Sunday in October. However, through legislation passed in 2006, Daylight Saving Time now
begins three weeks earlier on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in
November.
This change in Daylight Saving Time kept Canada's Daylight Saving Time pattern consistent with
the United States which enacted into law a broad energy bill that extended Daylight Saving
Time in the same manner.
War Cake was a reminder of what life was like in Canada during the Second World war. War
cake recipes vary, but they are traditionally butter-less, egg-less, milk-less, and sometimes
sugarless, reflecting those difficult days when many “luxury foods” were in short supply and
prohibitively expensive, or even under wartime rationing controls.
This particular old recipe does call for a bit of butter but substitutes brown sugar for the refined
white sugar which was also hard to come by.
Maybe your Grandmother made this? Mine did!
2 c. light brown sugar 2 c. cold water
4 tbsp. Butter 1 tbsp. allspice
1 tsp. Nutmeg 1 tsp. cinnamon
1 box seedless raisins 4 c. flour
2 tsp. Soda 1 c. hot water
No eggs No milk
CANADIAN WAR CAKE
Cook sugar, water, butter, spices and raisins for 5 minutes. Cool and add flour. Put soda in 1 cup
hot water and add to above mixture. Beat well, bake slowly 325 degrees.
ICING
2 c. brown sugar 1 c. white sugar
1 c. Butter 3/4 c. milk
1 tsp. Vanilla 1 c. black walnuts
1 c. cold water
Cook butter, sugar, milk slowly until it forms a soft ball. Remove from heat, add vanilla and nuts.
Beat until thick. Spread on cake.
