Annexure V: Detailed transcripts of interviews Jackie Shroff What’s your perception about influence on cinema on youth? I myself have been a kid once and used to watch films. The influence of movies by Shammi Kapoor, Dev Anand and their films has been quite a lot. What I am today, is a little bit of Shammi and Dev, maybe. How films influenced me…well, I didn’t pick I didn’t go beating up people or villains. What influenced me most was the romance of films, the songs, happiness. I never took to Pran saab and his evil ways. It’s basically up to every child, how he reacts to a film. It doesn’t mean that if they watch a film, they will only look at Pran. They will see Shammi, Dev…the good, the positive always has an influence. Ok, there may be some people who think negative, who have a character flaw, do destructive things…it’s not so much the film but their own personal characteristics. I wouldn’t say films influence people to do negative things. I would say many of the cartoons that are shown on networks – like Tom & Jerry – are more vicious and brutal and these are seen by children more. When I used to see my child watching these, I would feel worried. That’s violence in the name of cartoons. I had heard in Japan that there was some cartoon show in which the lights would flash in such a way that it used to jar the children’s mind. The colours, the sounds all had a very bad effect on children. I do feel films have an impact. If there are 1 billion people in the country and only 30 heroes and heroines, your mind definitely gets influenced by what my hero is doing, what my idol is doing. Whether he is smoking, drinking, whether he is eve-teasing. All that can affect a child but a child is not allowed to see adult films. But they are allowed to see cartoons. Actors do have a larger than life image and youngsters often get carried away by what they see on screen. So if you dress in a certain way or walk in a certain way or if you smoked in a particular film, wouldn’t this influence youngsters. What do you feel? I have children at home and when I smoke in a film, it is if I am playing a negative character. There is nothing positive about smoking. He is a negative guy, a depressed guy and he is smoking. My children ask me, “hey you were smoking in that film” and I tell them, “I was playing a bad guy.” That’s it. So, it’s what you pick up. Either you pick up the qualities of Ram or you pick up the qualities of Lakhan. Either you want to be a rich man in a day or you want to go the hard way up. It’s up to every individual. Generally speaking in hindi movies do you feel that there has been a decline in the incidents of smoking? Yes, there has been a decline. People are not smoking as often as they used to. And, because of the curbs, self-realisation…If you’re playing a wild character, it’s a different story. A businessman. Earlier if they showed a character in a pensive mood, they would have him smoke, throw light on it, add a little mystery to the whole thing. Maybe you still do it in thrillers where they show a hand with a cigarette and you know there’s something going to happen. All those things are part of the intrigue, and it could psyche a child. But talking about teenagers, you have to be 18-19 years to watch an adult film. And in fact what they see on television is much worse than what they see in films. At least in films, there’s the Censor that’s working out there, there are some norms that you can’t go in to watch an adult film until you’re 18. But TV, which you watch regularly, can harm a little kid’s mind. Generally the negative character smokes. But in Rangeela, yours was a positive character and yet you were smoking… Actor, I played the part of an actor. My director wanted me to smoke, you’re an actor, stressed and you are smoking just to relieve yourself, playing video games. Yeah I remember doing that. What are the other associations that go with smoking apart from negative characters. Style, aura of wealth, pressure of the world, so you relax with a cigarette…which is all bullshit. That’s if you’re talking about smoking. If you’re talking about the evils of killing, maiming, of violence, television has more of that than films. There is no censorship, you can just view what you want. But to watch Rangeela you have to be of a certain age, to watch that. 111
You have endorsed cigarette brands… I do endorse cigarettes. I don’t endorse soft drinks which are killer drinks. I don’t endorse anything which is harmful to little children. I endorse cigarettes which people smoke, by people who are sensible. If they want to smoke they smoke. If they don’t wanna smoke, they don’t. They are adults and you can’t stop an adult for god’s sake. But you can harm a child with the high percentage of sugar in a so-called soft drink. It can be lethal to a child’s stomach. To quote a figure from the WHO, tobacco kills 8.4 million a year. It killed my mom…it killed my mom on the 26th of this month. And still you endorsed cigarettes? Yeah, I did it. At least I didn’t camouflage it with a sweetener. Like the others are doing. I think you should do a recce on soft drinks immediately. …(goes on about sweeteners, soft drinks, etc…) Right, but to quote another figure, one of 2 of today’s smokers will die of tobacco related causes by year 2020. Given that kind of statistic and given the kind of influence that role models like filmstars have on youngsters today, do you feel actors have a responsibility? Actors have a responsibility to a point. We are not here to preach. If there are public service films, etc. we definitely go ahead and do it. We do our bit…but when we do an ad, we do an ad. That’s it. In the West, there has been a trend where tobacco companies do a lot of in-film advertising. You have Sylvester Stallone endorsing a brand of cigarettes in his films. Is such a thing happening in Hindi films too? People (tobacco companies) are coming in. Because they are stopping tobacco, booze. So they are doing it for Formula 1 (car racing), golf, Wills has been doing sports things. You used to have your cricket players all using Wills… That has been banned….. You can imagine how long they have been at it… Gradually I think this should be over. I definitely wouldn’t like my children to smoke. They know their father smokes off and on, but my son is into sports and tells me “I will never smoke, Dad.” He has seen my mom smoke a lot. She had been smoking for the last 30 years, she just died, unfortunately and that’s how I got into it, watching my mother. It’s difficult to get it out of my system but I try. I try and give it up for 10 months. I know more than 5 cigarettes will kill me fast, but I control myself as much as I can. Basically I want to get rid of it. I have been at it since a long time now. How long? I was in Tenth Standard. Were you influenced by filmstars? No filmi-vilmi. My mom. If you get influenced by a film actor, and you take the negative points, then there’s a streak in you which is negative. Then you take Ram or Ravan. Which one do you select? Whose life you want to lead? When you endorse cigarette brands, do you carry it on to your films would you smoke the same in your films? No. I haven’t done it.
