HAMMER HOUSE After the phenomenal response to the first part of Wallis and Wallis’ WW2 propaganda poster auction in March (which auctioneer Roy Butler described as ‘madness’), the company are expecting a busy day on May 5th when a second batch goes under the hammer. In the earlier auction, one pair of posters, with the classic slogans ‘Careless Talk Costs Lives,’ and ‘Tell Nobody – Not Even Her’, went for a staggering £2,700. This bonny Land Girl, trying to attract helpers to bring in the ‘Victory Harvest’ of 1945, should raise a bob or two, herself – you might remember a different version of her on our #24 cover. WHERE DID YOU GET THAT HAT? #2 Oliver Darlington, High St, April 16th It’s a boina, which is the Spanish word for beret. And I got it in a superb hat shop in Barcelona. USEFUL THINGS YOU CAN BUY IN LEWES #2 In the second of our series looking at where you can buy basic objects in the centre of Lewes, we’re seeking stockists of seeds and tomato plants. Peter Messer tells us Sky-Lark in the Needlemakers offer an excellent range of King’s vegetable and flower seeds including “recherché oriental vegetables”. Matt can order specific seeds and organise bulk rates for allotment societies, 01273 479418. Tomato and other vegetable plants can be found in Fur, Feather and Fins in Cliffe. B I T S a n d B o B S WHAT’LL WE DO TONIGHT? LEWES IN QUOTES The Mayor of Lewes (Col CD Crisp), one of the most notable figures in the world of footballing referees… told the audience of his adventures when taking the Chelsea team on tour in South America in 1929. Football in South America, at that time at any rate, was one of the “dangerous trades”. At one match Chelsea (having been warned in advance by the Commissioner of Police that they must not score) had the hardihood, or the misfortune, to score a goal. Thereupon revolvers went off, the ground was strewn with oranges thrown by the crowd, and mounted police, summoned by a siren, arrived on the field of battle. After the match the unfortunate team had the tyres of their coach slashed, and had to be rescued by a naval party with taxis.
