What does the title refer to? It’s also the title of the recent book that has been published about my last thirty years’ work. It was inspired by an idea in the neurologist Oliver Sacks’ book Musicophelia in which he describes the capability of music to evoke the past, while rooting you in the present. I find this contradiction can be attributed to images and landscapes as well as music. There’s a play on words there, too, in that such images are a gift to ourselves. What’s the inspiration behind the work? It’s one of a series I’ve done of single figures or two sisters together inspired by a photo I came across of two South African women suffering from HIV, who were holding up boxes of memorabilia from their lives they’d collected to present to the next generation. It struck me as a tremendous way of giving something of yourself as an image. In this case the woman is holding up a painting, called The Pine Tree by the Sea, by Carlo Carrà, the Italian metaphysical artist of the 20s and 30s. It has been an important image for me since my student days. What media did you use? It’s an etching, using chin colle, a technique placing very thin paper between the print and the drawing, which adds texture. What are your major influences? Carlo Carrà, and his contemporaries De Chirico and Morandi. There’s a strong Eastern European influence, as well, particularly from the author and graphic artist Bruno Schulz, who wrote fairy stories drawing on mythology, using very dreamlike imagery. And the filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky. Closer to the present, in my student days I was very influenced by RB Kitaj, and his ideas that figurative painting can draw on all sorts of different sources. What do you think of the Turner Prize? It’s done its job because the publicity it has created has encouraged people to go and see the work involved. I’m disappointed that not many painters have been involved recently, though. What painting would you hang from your desert island palm tree? The Pine Tree by the Sea. w w w. V I VA L e w e s .
