The children’s rhyme ‘here we go gathering nuts of May’ is a corruption of ‘knots’, since May is no time to gather nuts. These days, the Knots of May women’s Morris team organise the annual Garland Day event in Lewes on the May Day Bank holiday. Local children bring along their floral creations to be judged. Tom Reeves tells me that it was seeing this 1881 Reeves photograph of the judging of the annual Lewes Garland Competition, begun in 1874 by J F Verrall Esq, that inspired the Morris women to reinstate this Lewes May tradition. Verrall’s aim was apparently to give the poor children, who used to beg for ‘a penny for the garland’ on 1st May, something constructive to do, as well as encouraging ‘knowledge of wild flowers’, although some might think making garlands involves picking, and possibly nicking, flowers rather than learning about them. This year on Monday May 3rd, the ‘Children’s Garland Competition’ begins at 10am in the Castle Gun Garden, with the Mayor assisting the judging. Then the children process with the Knots of May Morris team, in traditional Lancastrian mill worker aprons and clogs, holding homemade fabric garlands, from the Castle grounds down to Cliffe Bridge. They are accompanied by the Chanctonbury Ring Morris Men. The Knots of May then present the children with certificates and prizes for the prettiest garlands. Emma Chaplin 4 5
