CD REVIEW - THE MUEL – ONCE AND EVERYWHERE MAGAZINE REVIEW: MONIKA B I T S a n d B o B S Anyone who caught a gig by the marvellously eclectic and now sadly defunct pop band Turning Green will not forget their drummer, Sam Walker (left, centre), a Cooksbridge lad whose madcap energy did so much to drive forward the band’s relentlessly danceable live sets. Behind the Animal-from-the-Muppets stage act, though, lurked a creative and sensitive mind, hinted at when he took the mike on a couple of self-penned songs. Sam’s played solo a lot too in Lewes – unfurling that sensitive side, displaying his multi-instrumental prowess and proving his ability to hold a crowd’s rapt attention with hear-a-pin-drop semi-falsetto vocal solos. Once and Everywhere is an impossible-to-pigeon-hole album to play and play again: deeply layered, multiinfluenced, finely produced, and displaying a remarkable range of moods. Next time you’re near a computer, listen to The Bubble on The Muel’s myspace site, one of many highlights of this remarkable album, in which Ravel’s Bolero meets The Long and Winding Road, with kettle drums. Warning: it’ll stay in your head for days. BOOK REVIEW: FASHION TRIMS Lewes textile designer Louise Turner has written a large and sumptuous hardback book called Fashion Trims. It’s a gorgeous and rather fun sewing project book divided up into sections such as ‘hats and shoes’, or ‘bags and baskets’. Louise is also a teacher, and she guides you helpfully through the processes involved in customising and decorating a variety of objects. It is generously illustrated with photographs by Sian Irvine, with the most luxurious and colourful ribbons and fabrics that make me want to stroke the pages. EC (More details from www.louiseturnertextiles.co.uk). Monika is an arts magazine, in its second edition, which is edited by a Lewesbased journalist, whose identity we will keep to ourselves. Why should we throw such a cloak of anonymity over this person? Because anonymity is what the magazine is all about, despite its title. The idea is that writers, photographers and illustrators will be able to work in a more creative manner without being identifiable from their byline. Such anonymity helps, I guess, when you’re writing a piece called ‘Amsterdam in 32’, chronicling how the author ‘did 32 poos’ in a single weekend in the Dutch city. This turns out, actually, to be a fairly absorbing read, and the poos turn out to be symbolic, ‘the remnants of my youth seeping out of me’. Another author, in a rather inspired manner, psychogeographically explores some tunnels in Balham, that might or might not exist. Monika, which is sold internationally in specialist bookstores, and from monikamagazine.com, is a beautifully designed piece of work, mixing matt and glossy pages, the latter a showcase for fine documentary photography and C21 pop art. This issue’s theme is ‘In Between’ though its strapline suggests a broader spectrum of flexibitlity: ‘It’s about what it says’. 2 7
