Benjamin Willard Tall Clock, Roxbury, Massachusetts, no. 207, c.<br />

1780, silvered sheet brass dial engraved Benja. Willard Roxbury, No.<br />

207, and Ab Hoc Momento Pendet Eternitas with a phoenix in the arch,<br />

the fret-top maple case with fan-carved waist door flanked by thumbnail<br />

corners, all on a two-stage molded bracket foot base, eight-day time<br />

and strike movement with rack and snail strike regulated by a wooden<br />

pendulum rod and brass-faced bob all powered by two period iron<br />

weights, ht. 87 1/2 in.<br />

Daniel Burnap Cherry Tall Clock, East Windsor, Connecticut, c. 1785,<br />

engraved sheet brass silvered dial signed in the arch Daniel Burnap,<br />

East Windsor, recessed seconds and calendar dials, Roman numerals<br />

and overall decorative engraved raffles, stylized pagoda hood with<br />

three turned finials, fluted freestanding columns flanking the arched and<br />

glazed hood door, fluted quarter-columns flanking the serpentine top<br />

waist door, two-stage base molding and ogee feet, eight-day time and<br />

strike movement with deadbeat escapement, wooden pendulum rod,<br />

brass-faced bob and two cast iron weights, ht. 88 1/2 in.<br />

Note: Daniel Burnap (1759-1838) was a clockmaker, instrument maker,<br />

silversmith and brass founder and remains very well documented<br />

in the definitive work by Penrose Hoopes, The Shop Records of<br />

Daniel Burnap, Clockmaker. Burnap’s Memorandum Book, wheelcutting<br />

engine, tools and casting patterns are in the collections of the<br />

Connecticut Historical Society.<br />
