Reuben Ingraham Tall Clock, Plainfield, Connecticut, No. 90, c. 1780,<br />

11 1/2-in. sheet brass engraved silvered dial plate signed in the arch<br />

Reuben Ingraham, Plainfield No. 90 surmounted by engraved portraits<br />

of a man and woman, Roman numerals with Arabic minutes, stylized<br />

floral spandrels, seconds bit and recessed date dial, eight-day time and<br />

rack strike movement with wooden pendulum rod, brass-faced bob and<br />

powered by two period iron weights, walnut case with solid fret top,<br />

freestanding columns, waist door and recessed panel in the base, ht.<br />

Note: Reuben Ingraham (1745-1811) was apprenticed to clockmaker<br />

and silversmith John Avery (1732-1794) of Preston, Connecticut. See<br />

Heckscher and Bowman, American Rococo, 1750-1775, p. 69 for a<br />

magnificent engraved and silvered Reuben Ingraham dial signed by the<br />

engraver, John Avery.<br />

Pennsylvania Cherry Cased Tall Clock, c. 1830, scroll-top case with<br />

striped maple freestanding columns flanking the arched and glazed<br />

hood door, rectangular waist door with line inlay and banded outline,<br />

circular line inlay in the base all on French feet, painted wooden dial<br />

with Roman numerals and floral sprays in the spandrels, thirty-hour<br />

chain drive weight-powered “Black Forest” movement with two weights<br />

and pendulum, ht. 100 1/4 in.<br />

unsigned painted iron dial with Roman numerals, river view with bridge<br />

in the arch, raised gilt decorated spandrels, arched and glazed hood<br />

door flanked by freestanding fluted columns, inlaid rectangular waist<br />

door, inlaid base on French feet, eight-day skeletonized plate movement<br />

with countwheel strike on the great wheel, recoil escapement, wooden<br />

pendulum rod, brass bob, and two lead weights, ht. 88 1/2 in.<br />
