William Cummens Mahogany Tall Clock, Roxbury, Massachusetts, c.<br />

1795, painted iron dial with Roman numerals and signed W. Cummens,<br />

floral sprays in the spandrels and moon’s age in the arch, rectangular<br />

waist door with line and fan inlays flanked by brass stop-fluted quartercolumns,<br />

the lower section with fan inlays and two-stage base molding,<br />

eight-day brass time and strike movement powered by two brass-cased<br />

weights and regulated by a pendulum, ht. 96 in.<br />

kidney-shaped Roman numeral dial signed Joseph Loring, Boston,<br />

inlaid case with fret top and French feet, eight-day time-only movement<br />

with iron weight and pendulum, ht. 38 in.<br />

Note: An eight-day tall clock by Joseph Loring is in the J. Cheney<br />

Wells Collection at Old Sturbridge Village, and his daybook is in the<br />

collections at the American Antiquarian Society.<br />

Connecticut, c. 1818, painted wooden with Arabic numerals, inside<br />

minute track and gilt decoration, scroll-top case with three brass finials,<br />

reverse-painted lower tablet depicting a rural scene and off-center<br />

pendulum aperture, printed maker’s label stating in part, Patent Clocks<br />

Made and Sold by Seth Thomas, Plymouth, Conn., thirty-hour strap<br />

wooden movement with center mounted countwheel all powered by<br />

two compound-hung weights and pendulum, ht. 30 in.<br />
