Rungwe Bush Viper Atheris rungweensis Comments • Two species (Serrated Hinged Terrapin and Black-necked Spitting Cobra) are included in the Mahale list despite not having been directly observed. This is on the basis of indirect evidence, such as interviews, and because they are found in similar habitats north and south of Mahale. • No records have been found of the Slender-snouted Crocodile but it should occur in Mahale. • The two undescribed species (Leptosiaphos sp. and Cnemaspis sp.) are likely to be endemic to the Mahale area (Menegon and Moyer, pers. com.). • Three species (Lake Tanganyika Water Snake, Banded Water Cobra and Mt Rungwe Bush Viper) are Albertine Rift endemics. • In Tanzania, the Jameson’s Mamba has only ever been recorded in Mahale and Gombe National Parks. • As of 2008, the reptile list stands at 40 species, but the area has not been comprehensively surveyed and there are likely to be many species that remain to be found here. 21
