Secrets of cooling off told
Plymouth area residents breathed a
collective sigh of relief Friday as
more temperate weather graced the
community. The mercury refused to
top the 90 degree mark and a refreshing
breeze wafted through the streets.
affording many residents the chance
to do all that work they had avoided
in the midst of the heat wave.
In a random survey, the Observer
found that while people did what they
could to manage their daily lives dur-
ing the last two weeks of scorching
sun. most made small adjustments to
make "coping" just a little easier.
The methods people employed to
beat the heat ranged from cutting
down on outdoor activities to cooking
less and swimming more However,
some stoie souls reported they didn't
do anything but put up with the discomfort
and hope for a break
"I shopped an awful lot." said
Marie Forthofer of Plymouth. "I just
got up every morning and went out to
the malls where it was nice and cool
and felt good."
She also said the extreme heat pre
vented her from doing her usual
chores around the house "I did absolutely
no housework and very little
cooking on the stove. We set up a gas
barbeque outside and used it almost
every night."
DARTLENE BOLIN of Canton said
the heat finally got to her and she put
in a window air conditioner which had
been sitting in the basement all year*
"After we got the air conditioner in.
it wasn't quite so bad We just figured
out ways to say inside and lay
around," she said
Dave Kraus of Plymouth Township
was one of those hardy souls who
didn't get overly upset by the weather.
"It really wasn't all that bad during
the day. I just swam every chance
could get."
But during the nights it was a differ-
ent story "It did get kind of tough to
sleep So I cranked the old air conditioner
up and slept in the basement "
Ella and Edward Boorhis of Canton
also said they weren't that put out by
the heat; but after more than a week
started to feel a little uncomfortable
"I don't know about Ella," said
Boorhis, "but I just thought of all that
cold we had last winter and I felt a
lot better I think the cold is harder to
take than the heat."
Canton resident Fran Boles used the
weather as an excuse to go out to eat
"I don't think I cooked more than
twice in the last couple weeks So I
guess I did okay with it. But I like to
eat out anyway."
Buss Jacob of Plymouth Township,
on the other hand, said the heat and
humidity really knocked him out "It
got to me I worked less and didn't go
out in the evenings as much All I can
say is I'm glad somebody invented air
conditioning "
Diana Scheppels and Kay Wilson,
both Canton residents, also said they
tried to arrange their days to spend
as much time in air conditioned
places as possible.
"Nothing beats central air," commented
Ms. Wilson She. too. admitted
to joining the out-to-dinner crowd
more often than was her usual practice.
Ms. Scheppels said she did just a
little more swimming and "played a
whole lot less baseball "
